Page 2: Fossil fuels

What are Fossil Fuels?

coal, oil/petroleum and natural gas

85% are used in united states which is almost 2/3 of the electricity also transports the fuels virtually.

What are the different types of fuels?

3 types of fuels

• Coal• Oil• Natural gases

How is coal formed?

Consist with hard, black colored rock-like substance

It is also made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and amounts of sulfur.

3 types of coal: anthracite, bituminous and lignite http://i.treehugger.com/

Describe the different stages of coal formation?

Anthracite: hardest and has a lot of carbon, which gives a more higher energy content.

Lignite: softest and low in carbon however it has high in hydrogen and oxygen

Bituminous: in between.

Lignite (top left), sub bituminous coal (top right), bituminous coal (bottom left), and

anthracite (bottom right). http://faculty.virginia.edu/metals/Images/

How is coal used as a fossil fuel?

shipped by train and boats and pipelines

The are grounded up and mixed with water to make slurry then it is pumped many miles through pipelines to fuel power plants and other factories.

Page 7: Fossil fuels

How is natural gas formed?

Consist with primarily with methane

It was first discovered in Iran

lighter than air made up of carbon

and hydrogen atoms chemical formula:

CH4http://www.impactlab.com/wp-

How is natural gas used as a fossil fuel?

stoves, water heaters

It is flammable which makes fire

What are refineries and why are they important to the production of fossil Fuels? Refinery:

industrial process plant

This is where the basic oil is processed.

They refine fuel to make is more useful http://www.ivicom-consulting.com/

Describe the Exxon Valdez oil spill discussing the incident, clean up, and the effect it had on the environment of prince William sound in Alaska.

A ship going to long beach, California hit prince William Alaska which caused an oil spill

March 24,1989 10.8 were spilled Killed and deformed

a lot of Alaska's wildlife and sea life. http://upload.wikimedia.org/

Describe the deep water horizon oil catastrophe discussing the incident, the clean up attempts and the effect it is still have on the environment of the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding areas.

Happened in April 20,2010

In the seafloor of gulf of Mexico

Made a deep explosion in the deepwater horizon.

This was captured by the satellite.

Sent 2 air crafts to spray oil dispersant
