Aikido is a peaceful martial art and is unlike any other. There are no winners since there are no competitions. In aikido, there are no attacks, only defense and even the defense should be very gentle.

Aikido is an art that takes a long time to learn and the student being trained in this form of martial art should be very patient. Developed by Moriches Ueshiba or as respectfully referred to as O sensei (The great teacher), the art involves some throws and joint locks that have been taken from Jujitsu and some other throws and techniques that have been taken from Kenjutsu. The focus of aikido is not to punch or kick opponents but to gain control over them by using their own energy.

Even though there are no different styles of Aikido, many students who had trained under O sensei who wanted to spread their knowledge of this art started opening their own dojos and everyone’s interpretation of aikido was different. As a result, various different styles of aikido were born.

Therefore, there is a complete focus on aikido on the role of tori. The basic aikido martial art techniques should not be complex or complicatedly structured but reasonably straightforward to understand and perform. The attacks that are difficult for the attacker should not be included in the basic system.
