   President’s Message

Dear AIESECers,

Quarter 2 passed by really fast.

From the end of NLDC 2011 in Ottawa, we searched for a new VP Outgoing Exchange to complete our team. And on the 1st of June, we welcomed Emily Gu to the position. It felt great finally having a complete team. On top of that, we selected our two summer marketers for this year; Ijaz Rahim, doing his second term as summer marketer, and Julia Luu a general member from Simon Fraser University. They did an amazing job winning all three Marketing Blitzes during the summer, with the help of the Calgary CR Team. I would also like to mention and thank Nancy Luu, for taking up the role as Executive Assistant, and helping me out with my tasks.

With my absence for one month in the middle of summer, I was happy to return and see that activities were kept up. Just before I left, we held a mini conference as a bring back from NLDC and two interns were realized. While I was Europe, Calgary won a marketing blitz and raised $2500 for Western Regional Conference. By the end of quarter 2, we have more than $10,000 raised for WRC and two more interns realized. Congratulations to Carol Chung and her team for doing an amazing job with organizing the conference

I’m looking forward to Quarter 3: recruitment season, attending WRC, and LCP election!

WRC 2008 was my very first conference and it was an amazing experience. I got to expand my network beyond the UofC and got to actually understand what AIESEC is, why it’s important, and the impact it has worldwide. That conference and the people I met are the reasons I stayed with AIESEC and continue to develop myself through this organization. I highly recommend going to Western Regional Conference for all new members or those who has not gone to a conference yet! In just one weekend, you get the opportunity learn about AIESEC and have fun with AIESECers from 9 universities across Canada.

Cheers!

The annual Western Regional Conference took place on October 7th to October 9th at the Ramada hotel in downtown Calgary. For new members, it was an amazing opportunity to experience the AIESEC spirit and learn all about the organization, along with its values. Western Regional conference gives its members a chance to discover what it truly means to eb a part of the world’s largest inter-connected student affiliation.

Conferences are usually filled with valuable sessions, and helping individuals to discover avenues that can be used to help make an impact on society, locally and globally. Members can expect a great deal of professional and personal growth all in one weekend.

WRC 2011 brought together 200 students from nine different universities, and AIESEC affiliates in Canada. The AIESECers had a blast reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. By surrounding yourself with the West’s most innovative and driven youth, you are sure to leave with new insights and a new determination. Plus, with cheering and dancing, never will there be a dull moment.

Frank Olaya, as the chair of the conference, provided a great sense of guidance and unforgettable humour.

All the sessions were very educational, and provided everyone with valuable lessons to keep with them not only within AIESEC, but in their professional and personal lives forever.

The conference provided a multi-dimentional outlet for work and play. It was a multi-faceted weekend filled with loud cheers, endless laughs, smiles & tears, life lessons, work, and play.

The organizing committee spent so much time and effort ensuring an unforgettable weekend. It was amazing to see all of our efforts play out and pay off by winning the spirit keg!

Western Regional Conference 2011Pedrico Siagian: Best Delegate Award Winner

As a freshly recruited member of AIESEC, my only expectation was to spend the long weekend relaxing in a nice hotel. These expectations changed quickly after I met with members from other cities. Although it was the first time to have met them, the atmosphere had a sense of family and care between us. The conversation flowed like a river and it was such an open environment for communication.

Every session I attended created a clear picture on how the Organization Committee aimed to get everyone to step out of their comfort zone and crack the wall that hindered each member to be actively involved. This was demonstrated through song, dances, and cheers that welcomed us and ended each session. These songs and dances were a great way to pick up the sessions and provided motivation and good AIESEC spirit.

The leadership programs offered by AIESEC, reinforced through each session, were a great opportunity to become a part of any of the portfolios. In addition, WRC was a good opportunity in getting to know AIESEC even better.

Another good thing about WRC was that we were always encouraged not only to work hard, but to party hard as well. So every night as a group, we went to the night club (The Roadhouse and Vinyl Retro Lounge) to have a good time together. This was a great outlet in getting to know each other not only from the formal aspect, but also the informal aspect.

Overall, my experience with WRC was awesome, tiresome, a voice strain, and yet, fuelled my fire to contribute more to my portfolio!

The other thing that makes this conference memorable in my life was that I was given the honour of receiving an award as the best delegate (or “best newbie”) representing the Calgary Local Chapter. I keep trying to convince everyone it was through teamwork that I won this award, and it just so happened that I was recognized as the “biggest trouble-maker”.

I wasn’t even aware that such an award existed, as I was just having fun, working together in the most spirited team who was also awarded with the Spirit Keg! If you want to know more about the Spirit Keg, it’s something you need to experience; come to the next WRC and we’d love to share the story in greater detail.

This conference was truly priceless and the experience could not be traded for anything. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the next conference!

Throughout the summer, the Alumni Relations portfolio has tried a number of strategies to support our upcoming Western Regional Conference this October. These initiatives include the alumni donation challenge, working together with Corporate Relations and the WRC Organizing Committee to raise sponsorships through our alumni contacts.

The following are just a few alumni to whom we would like to extend our sincere thanks for supporting us in our donations and sponsorship efforts:

UpdatesAlumni Relations

• Kasha Piquette from TD Waterhouse• Alvaro Ipanaque from Agrium• Miranda Erickson from AESO• Nicole Montgomery from Xerox Canada• Heather Campbell from Gran Tierra

• Christine Bye• Dave Steen• Lisa Gordon• Miranda Erickson• Elizabeth Watterworth

Despite the ongoing effort to raise sponsorships and donations from our alumni, we have experienced a number of technical problems with the alumni donation challenge. Therefore, in the near future, we will continue with our effort to create an exchange fund for our local exchange participants.

A Big Thank you
