Welcome to the 83rd Annual AIA Wisconsin Convention & Building Products Expo . . . REvolution!

A revolution is underway and the profession of architecture is dramatically evolving.

The outcome of this REvolution is ours to determine.• Architects must work together to shed old

clichés and outdated stereotypes.• Architects must think creatively to

leverage evolving responsibilities and new technologies for better outcomes.

• Architects must act differently to adapt our business practices in this evolving industry.

This year the 2014 AIA Wisconsin Convention & Building Products Expo will focus on what we know to be true: we can build our future and create our destiny.

Featuring a strong roster of keynote speakers and timely seminars, the Convention & Expo offers AIA members and allied professionals real opportunities to explore emerging design, practice, technology and environmental issues, as well as investigate the innovative products and services now available to the design and construction industry.

Whether you are with a large firm, a single practitioner or somewhere in between, the 2014 AIA Wisconsin Convention and Building Products Expo provides many opportunities to advance your connections and re-fuel your passion for good design. Plus, you’ll learn about maximizing the best practices that increase profitability and client satisfaction. The workshops, discussions and presentations will focus on the skills and leadership necessary to navigate this architectural REvolution.

Welcome!Registration BadgesEveryone attending the AIA Wisconsin Convention & Expo must register and have a name badge. Registration is available on Level 4 and Level 1 (during Expo hours). Entry into seminar rooms and the Expo Hall requires that attendees wear their name badges at all times and have them visible for easy viewing.

SeminarsPaid attendee registration includes your choice of seminars based on one-day or two-day registration. Seminar and keynote sessions are offered on a first-come first-seated basis. Selecting your preferred seminar when you registered does not obligate you to attend that particular seminar, nor does it reserve your seat. However, it does allow us to coordinate room sizes with the popularity of the events.

A complete listing of exhibitors and a floorplan of the Exhibit Hall is included in this program. AIA/CES Reporting & TranscriptsAIA members can earn valuable AIA/CES “learning unit hours” by participating in AIA Wisconsin Convention programs. AIA Wiscon-sin is a Registered Provider with the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems (AIA/CES). Continuing education hours earned on completion of this program will be reported to AIA/CES for AIA members. Cer-tificates of Completion are available on request.

Convention programs are registered with AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, they do not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing or dealing in any material or product. Attendees are required to fill out an AIA /CES Conference Attendance Form for Convention programs and an Expo Education Report Form to report participation in predetermined tracks of 15-minute sessions. The forms should be left at the Convention registration counter to be recorded on transcripts.

Continuing Education RequirementsThe annual AIA member renewal requirement is 18 Learning Unit Hours (LUs), of which at least 12 hours must address health, safety and welfare topics.

Fulfilling AIA/CES requirements enables members to also satisfy state licensing requirements for most states, including Wisconsin.

Professional CommunityExchanging knowledge and building professional relationships is priceless. AIA Wisconsin hosts the Building Products Expo for design and construction industry leaders to network, learn and advance their professional careers.

WAF Raffle Support the Wisconsin Architects Foundation and try your luck at winning great prizes as part of the WAF Raffle. Beginning with an obsession in the idea of “line is space,” the work has moved from small scale installations to increasingly larger scale buildings. By looking at a range of projects, the lecture covers their trajectory from purely line-driven projects to those that consider dialogues between line, surface, and volume. Practice: Targeting BIM Success - Aligning BIM Implementation to Strategic Goals Tony Rinella Hall of Ideas E & FEvidence-based best practice standards powered by reliable performance tracking and report-ing are transforming many industries and areas of practice today. This seminar demonstrates how a balanced scorecard approach, inspired by original research at Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facility Engineering, is used to effectively improve project outcomes in all phases through quantitative measurement of BIM and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) implementation performance and maturity. Sustainability: Beyond Green Design: Strategies for Achieving Sustainable Buildings Joy E. Altwies Hall of Ideas H & IThis seminar will explore strategies for achieving sustainable buildings that go beyond green design. While creating a “sustainable” building has come to be synonymous with creating a “green” design, even the greenest design will not be sustainable if architects and allied professionals fail to recognize important factors that impact long-term building performance. This session will discuss these factors, including owner engagement, operating staff capabilities, and technology innovation and adoption. By addressing these items, architects can implement strategies that will lead to improved long-term building performance. (S1C: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)

Gather with your friends and renew old acquaintances over lunch and celebrate the presentation of the 2014 AIA Wisconsin Golden Award to Thomas Hirsch, FAIA. The AIA Wisconsin Golden Award is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a member architect. The award recognizes an individual architect who has performed distinguished leadership and service to AIA Wisconsin over an extended period of time and by such leadership advanced the cause of the profession and provided inspiration to his/her fellow practitioners. Our featured speaker – Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA, 2014 Vice-President/President-Elect of the American Institute of Architects – will address the importance of shaping a public culture for design excellence.

Emerging Professionals Activity: Value Analysis** Pre-Registration Required ** 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.Hall of Ideas G & J

Specifically designed for Emerging Professionals, this workshop is based on a Value Analysis Activity in the Engineering Systems chapter of the Emerging Professionals Companion published by the AIA and NCARB.

Participants will work in teams and take on the role of a firm performing a value analysis (VA) on a project designed by them. A construction manager has identified through an initial budget of the documents that the project is over budget and has identified a number of value analysis suggestions to bring the project within budget. Parameters of the building will be identified with the group along with the suggested VA items. Each team will analyze the original design against each proposed VA item to evaluate its positive and negative potential in the overall context of the building and where appropriate develop alternatives.

This keynote address will discuss architecture in a digital age and explore ways in which architecture can, if it moves beyond its fixation on solitary buildings, become a way that we can in fact be at home in and make sense of our modern world. It will address a number of important questions. What is architecture good for in an age marked by the continual movement of people, goods, and data? How can it frame our relationship with our world and the others that share that place with us when so much of our reality is uncertain? What makes sense in a world in which everybody is becoming a maker and how things work has become invisible? This keynote address is made possible by the underwriting support of The Boldt Company. Transparency: Getting Greener with EPDs CalStar ProductsHall of Ideas E & F The building product transparency movement was spawned by the green building market and the need to identify and quantify the environmental impacts of building products. This presentation explains the alphabet soup of EPDs, LCAs and PCRs; shows how to use these “nutrition labels for products,” and discusses a case study of product benchmarking with and without EPDs – the first LEED for Schools project in Mississippi. Dimensional Cut Limestone: Origin to Order Valders Stone & MarbleHall of Ideas H & I This seminar will provide a basic review of the origin of limestone, its performance characteristics, attributes and its typical applications as a building stone. The course includes the typical fabrication process as well as the normal selection, specification resources and order process for dimensional cut limestone. (V2A: 1.5 LU hrs.)

Celebrate excellence in architecture by participating in the presentation of the 2014 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards. This year’s award presentation will be preceded by the Findorff Keynote presentation on “The Workplace of the Future” by Jon Pickard, FAIA.

Daylight. Fresh air. Space. Nature. Nourishment. Exercise. All simple precepts, yet all critical design factors in the creation of today’s healthy and productive workplaces. This special keynote address will examine how these significant factors impact the design of contemporary and future high-performance workplaces. While directly contributing to a project’s overall sustainability, they also positively affect a client’s bottom-line by supporting recruiting and retention, increasing productivity, promoting well-being and sparking creativity. Using project examples, design strategies applicable to buildings of varying scales and programs will be identified that have been well received by employees and management. This keynote address will review the AIA Sustainability Leadership Opportunity Scan. This research report helps equip architects to advance leadership opportunities through sustainability. Architects are uniquely positioned to play a leadership role in influencing and advancing the future through their work as creative problem-solvers for the built environment. Lecture HallContinuing the tradition of featuring the work of an AIA Wisconsin member-owned firm, this seminar will feature a presentation by Potter Lawson – one of the oldest architecture firms in the state, celebrating over 100 years of practice. The session will review the firm’s design philosophies, diverse architectural portfolio and several new interior work environments, including the firm’s new office. Practice: Contracts, Collaboration & Design-Build Projects AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community Hall of Ideas E & FThis seminar will review the best practices for Design-Build projects and feature a lively panel discussion by architects who are leaders of the AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community. Design-Build is a growing project delivery method. While it’s the preferred project delivery method for many owners, not every architect is a big fan. The session will address a number of topics, including: why architects and contractors are so different, differences in contracting for design services compared to trade contractors, varying levels of risk tolerance, why professional liability is such a big deal, critical nature of specificity in design scope of work, and issues related to indemnity and standard of care. Implementing Design-Build best practices can lead to successful design and profitable projects. (S3B: 1.5 LU hrs.)

Deep energy retrofits are not only more effective in reducing energy costs than the typical approach of updating outdated individual lighting and other engineering systems, but they also have the potential to generate a robust business opportunity for architects willing to take the lead.
