Loyalty Redefined: Adapting to the New World of Work

Morning Keynote

Forty years ago, employees didn’t have many expectations of their work, nor did they demand much from it. Conversely, employers’ outlook was also simple: If workers performed to expectation they were rewarded with competitive pay and benefits, raises, and promotions. Now, employees own their career progression. Top performers know their value and actively engage in finding their best next steps. Career mobility is the norm and organizations attempt to build cultures of excellence and attract and retain top talent. Employers seek to connect employees’ hearts and minds to the organization’s vision, mission and values. Culture and social responsibility are critical to driving behaviors, building a team and delivering results. All employees—not just those at the top—are encouraged to lead change. Engagement has replaced loyalty. HR’s role has become one of the most important roles in an organization. Today’s HR leaders must adapt to the new world of work. Program learning objectives:

• Review the C-suite HR role in this new world of work

• Become a contributing partner in your organization’s strategic planning process

• Identify the worker as a consumer of “the employee experience”

• Discuss new ways to get work done and predictions for future roles for HR

Lead with Emotional Intelligence to Reduce Risk & Influence Outcomes

There’s no overestimating the influence of emotions in the workplace. From hiring to separations, and everything in between, emotions impact operations. It takes practice to develop emotional intelligence, especially during powerful moments of upset. Yet how much time do we actually spend preparing ourselves and our workforce to respond during times of conflict or crisis? Turnover and employee relations are going to continue to be a challenge for businesses, but de-escalation techniques and strategies from this session will help to mitigate those risks, allowing HR leaders to better shape organizational culture and influence workforce behavior. Program learning objectives include:

• Assess organizational practices for opportunities to apply emotional intelligence and reduce the risks associated with employee relations.

• Utilize emotional intelligence techniques and strategies, such as de-escalation, to effectively manage relationships with key stakeholders to influence organizational behavior and outcomes.

• Demonstrate emotional intelligence to shape or shift organizational culture.

Fresh off her SXSW presentation, Melanie Weinberger is creating initiatives that drive positive human progress. A sought after public speaker, she enables transformation by helping people tap into their powerful potential. Develop the Courage to Influence & Improve Organizational Outcomes

HR leaders that have an influential communication style move systems and policies forward that are aligned with the values of the organization, contributing to a thriving, resilient, and agile culture. There are many skills necessary for developing into this kind of effective HR leader – one being the ability to have difficult conversations. Some HR professionals are infamous for this skill; however, even as HR leaders master “how” to have difficult conversations, internal barriers still exist. This interactive and introspective session explores what keeps HR leaders from feeling confident discussing the undiscussables, and then providing strategies to better influence others and prompt behavior change. Program learning objectives include:

• Identify the high organizational cost of avoiding the undiscussable with upper management.

• Build effective relationships and develop trust so that ideas get implemented.

• Utilize crucial C-suite communication strategies that have positive organizational impact.

Amy Wolfgang and Michelle Poole, PHR are Leadership and Career Coaches and Co-Founders of Coaching 4 Good, an Austin based organization that provides leadership and career development services centered around coaching that empowers human potential. Create an Engagement Strategy to Drive Your Bottom Line

Every day, organizations struggle to capture and utilize important employee feedback. As a result, companies miss out on hidden opportunities to improve the workplace costing thousands, if not millions, of dollars. As Millennials become the dominant group in the workplace, expectations around how companies will gather and act on employee feedback are changing fast. A smart approach for measuring and managing employee feedback is now an essential part of any HR strategy. This session will enable attendees to create an engagement strategy that acts as a catalyst for change within any organization. Program Learning Objectives:

• Develop a strategic plan that includes the use of technology to enhance existing feedback practices.

• Interpret analytic data to drive improvement of the employee experience as a strategic business goal.

• Change management strategy for engaging the workforce that connects organizational performance to strategic goals.

#metoo Movement: A Reminder to Assess the Risk of Harassment

Now more than ever, employees are demanding psychologically safe workplace environments where unwelcome, sexually suggestive behavior and subtle harassment is held accountable. Dated videos and quizzes have failed as a risk management strategy, requiring today’s HR professionals to more effectively address harassment concerns while protecting businesses from the financial burdens associated with claims, legal fees, public and employee relations. Attendees of this session will learn how to better manage and avoid the risk of workplace harassment while reviewing various types of harassment claims, including the legal standards for those claims. Legally-sound risk mitigation strategies and application of best practice recommendations from the EEOC will be offered to help HR leaders understand how to investigate and respond to claims of harassment in the workplace.

Maximize Your HR Leadership Effectiveness

The 21st Century workforce presents a unique set of challenges to HR managers and leaders. You’re called upon to lead multiple generations of people with diverse backgrounds, values, work ethics and perspectives. Statistically, over 70% of your workforce may be burned out, disengaged and doubtful of their own ability to contribute in a way that matters. As a leader, you need to be able to address these challenges, remove obstacles and initiate changes that improve the employee experience, increase engagement and optimize your workforce. At the same, you need to convince executives that your initiatives have the power to not only increase employee engagement but increase customer satisfaction and net profits as well. Program learning objectives include:

• Create a crystalized vision of how to have an empowered career in strategic HR.

• Identify and remove obstacles within your organization and introduce initiatives that increase employee productivity and profit.

• Develop communication skills that gain buy-in, inspire positive action, and make executives pay attention.

• Determine which priorities will give you the greatest return on your investment of time and energy.

• Know the difference between culture and climate... and how each impacts the employee experience and your authority as a leader.

The New Workforce: Talent Management for the Future

SHRM-SCP, GPHR, GRP

Artificial intelligence and robot relationships are just a couple of examples of what talent management may encompass in the future. We don’t have a crystal ball to tell us how to prepare, so let’s start with what we know: we have global workforces that span every continent, and five generations in the workforce. When it comes to talent management, one size does not fit all.

Together, we’ll look at where we are in relation to the predictions of Workforce 2000 and Workforce 2020, giving us insights about what we should consider when preparing for uncertainty. We’ll address the following questions so that our global workforce has the appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to meet current and future business requirements.

1. How did we prepare, what did we not plan for, what was easier than expected? 2. Would you have believed what you were told to expect? 3. What should we consider for Workforce 2030 and 2040?

Harness Your Capabilities, Wield Your Power, Advance Your Profession

Afternoon Keynote

At a time when CEO’s are expecting HR professionals to take on a greater role in driving organizational growth, who better to hear from than a CEO herself. Meet Gay Gaddis, Founder and CEO of T3, one of the largest woman-owned advertising agencies in the US. Women today are speaking truth to power, and Gay knows a thing or two about how to do it. In 1989, she started her company after cashing in a $16,000 IRA, having to prove herself ever since. She says that no matter your goals, it all comes down to power: knowing how to develop it and not being afraid to take it when it comes your way. Gay encourages people to draw upon life’s lessons to blaze a path to success, on your terms. Her presentation will provide you with the tools to find your voice and lead with confidence. Program learning objectives include:

• Recognize how to move beyond perceived limits to influence organizational behavior and outcomes.

• Build and use confidence to represent why diversity and inclusion is a smart organizational strategy.

• Own organizational culture and develop workplace practices that allow people to thrive.

Gay & T3 work with clients such as Allstate, UPS, 7-Eleven, Staples, Capital One, Pizza Hut, and a growing roster of Fortune 200 clients. Gay is also on the Dean’s Advisory Council to The University of Texas McCombs School of Business, the first female Chairman of the Texas Business Leadership Council, a regular contributor to Forbes, and author of the new book, Cowgirl Power.

Here’s what BRENÉ BROWN, Ph.D and New York Times bestseller has to say about Cowgirl Power:

Cowgirl Power is a book about embracing your story and your power...It's a great combination of storytelling, actionable strategy, and a fun history of some of the cowgirls that came before us.

Diversity of Perspective as an Inclusion Strategy

Before we can influence others, we first need to understand what influences us. At the root of much of our behavior are unconscious biases - beliefs and assumptions we make of which we may be completely unaware. Good leaders, like good drivers, check blind spots as an intuitive, subconscious behavior developed out of repetition. For those committed to diversity and inclusion, there are certain habits that must be formed to become emotionally and socially intelligent leaders. Program learning objectives include:

• Build the case for a Diversity & Inclusion strategy focused on creating equitable conditions in recruitment, team dynamics, career progression, and leadership development.

• Design and sustain the infrastructure needed for an inclusive organizational culture by aligning organizational statements of vision, values and ethics with expected workplace practices.

• Influence others to make decisions when selecting candidates, evaluating employee job performance, and determining organizational objectives.

Legislative Assessment: City of Austin’s Earned Sick Time Ordinance

The City of Austin recently passed an ambitious Earned Sick Time ordinance requiring employers to provide up to eight days of paid sick time per year for all employees working in Austin. The ordinance goes into effect on October 1, 2018, unless a recently filed legal challenge succeeds in derailing the ordinance. If the legal challenge fails, the Texas legislature could still overrule the ordinance in the next legislative session. In this session, we will discuss the likelihood of survival, provide attendees insight for applicability should it succeed, and address any other audience questions about the new ordinance. Program learning objectives include:

• Explain to organizational stakeholders the status of the ordinance, and how the ordinance might impact current or future HR policies.

• Evaluate and apply the ordinance, if it passes, to your own organizational strategies should it succeed, including how to comply and costs of non-compliance.
