Your Behavior

• Behavioral genetics is the next frontier in applying genetics for life improvement.

• Food Cravings: How likely are one is to feel satisfied by the meals and foods they consume. Tip: increase protein to help offset food cravings.

• Taste: How individuals respond to bitter taste. Tip: use smoothies or adjust cooking methods to get enough macro and micronutrients.

• Sweet Tooth: The tendency to crave sweet foods. Tip: use macronutrient percentages and healthy carbohydrates (in accordance with the “Genetic Dietary Profile” to keep sweet cravings in check.

• Emotional Eating: The risk of emotional or binge eating. Tip: be aware and keep health snacks on hand or find alternative outlets for unhealthy snacks.

Your Behavior

KEY BENEFIT:4

Being aware of behavioral predispositions surrounding the topic of food is hugely beneficial when striving to lose weight. Identifying why one craves (or rejects) certain foods, overeats, or eats when feeling emotional encourages them to find alternative

solutions and ways to cope without throwing their health goals out the window.

Tips for Positive Behavior Modification

• When clients understand that they are NOT “crazy” and that some behaviors centered around food and beverages are potentially genetic-driven, they can relax into who they are and begin to make smarter choices.

• Many “issues” showing up in the behavior section are directly related to macronutrient and fat consumption, as well as micronutrient deficiencies. When these needs are evaluated and addressed, many challenges around food cravings, sweet tooth, emotional eating, and addictive behaviors begin to take care of themselves naturally.

• Stress Response may also be playing a key role.

Your Stress Response

• Everyone experiences stress, but individual brain chemistry triggers different stress responses.

• Knowing how individual genetics impact stress can allow one to plan their day, adjust their career goals, develop effective communication strategies with others, create stress-reduction solutions for upcoming events, and more.

• Short-Term (“Acute”) Stress:

- Single stress experiences (examples = taking a test/quiz or getting in an argument)

- Some individuals are more susceptible to this kind of acute stress than others: freeze up in response to stress, have difficulty solving problems, can negatively affect effective communication, etc.

- Strategies for success: practice relaxation and/or visualization techniques or step back from a heated discussion (when others would bull ahead) .

Your Stress Response

• Long-Term (“Chronic”) Stress:

- Stress experiences sustained over a period of time (examples = occupational or relationship) stress.

- Some individuals are more sensitive to ongoing chronic stress than others.

- May be related to the adrenal system.

- Vitamin B supplementation may be beneficial.

• Stress Hypertension:

- Stress traits directly related to blood pressure.

- Strategies for success include increasing enjoyable exercises and/or activities to help alleviate the impact of stress on blood pressure and diminish the body’s stress response.
