Agricon products - providing market leading animal feed supplements for optimum livestock production, nutrition & vitality.

Agricon manufactures a wide range of supplements for the

beef, dairy, sheep and horse industries and is one of the most

diverse supplement suppliers in the industry.

Products include molasses blocks, loose mixes, feedlot

concentrates, and horse supplements.

The products and the range itself allows Agricon to supply

the hobby farmer right through to the large scale pastoral

companies and feedlots.

Agricon Products has been providing market leading animal

health and feed supplements nationwide since 1982,

and as Australia’s leading supplier of quality animal feed

supplements, our team is dedicated to ensuring that each

every product in the Agricon range provides your livestock

with the nutrition they need for optimum health and vitality.

As testimony to the quality of Agricon Products, many

original formulations are still in production today – with over

400 stockists Australia wide and a growing international

export trade, Agricon Products continues to expand its

comprehensive product range ensuring all types of feeding

requirements and programs are met with the latest in ration

formulation and nutritional products.

Established by Senior Nutritionist and Veterinarian from

one of Queensland’s largest feed mills, Harry Hornbuckle

developed Agricon Products manufacturing base formulation

rations for the stockfeed industry as the demand for specialist

nutrition products in Queensland became evident. Today,

Agricon continues to operate under the management

of Rural Industry leader Todd Wilshire, with a dedicated

team based at Agricon Products manufacturing facility in

Maryborough, Queensland.

COMMON DEFICIENCIESOPTIONS FOR SUPPLEMENTATION: Before starting on a supplementation program there are a number of things to consider:

• Method of supplementing eg. Dry lick or Block?

• What is your goal eg. maintenance, growth or increased fertility?

• Which animals are you going to feed eg. dry cows, cows and calves, steers or weaners?

Answering these questions will help to make it clear which supplement is best for you. The team at Agricon Products can help you work through these options to ensure you get the most out of your supplementation program.

PHOSPHORUS: The most devastating sign of phosphorus deficiency is reproductive failure with low calving rates, cows failing to cycle, cows failing to conceive and increased abortions. Calf mortality may be higher than normal. Phosphorus is the second most important mineral in bones (after calcium). In severe cases of phosphorus deficiency the bones may be fragile and stock lame. Phosphorus deficiency can also cause a depraved appetite and stock may chew on sticks, bones or rocks. This increases the risk of losing stock from botulism.

PROTEIN: Protein is essential for the growth of stock and also for the maintenance of the microbes in the rumen. Protein deficiency in ruminants causes a drop in feed intake as they are unable to digest the feed in the rumen. If this situation is not corrected with a protein supplement, feed intake will continue to fall and the animal will begin to lose weight.

Protein deficiency in ruminants should be corrected by using a mixture of urea and bypass protein. Urea is utilised in the rumen, while bypass protein is utilised in the fourth stomach (abomasum). Bypass protein is important for muscle development, growth rate, wool growth and milk production. Urea is more economical to use as a protein source, but a combination of urea and Protein Meal will give the best results. The tips on urea use should always be observed (see page 37).

PROBLEMS / SOLUTIONS GUIDEBIGHEAD: Bighead is a condition horses may develop when grazing improved pasture. It often occurs in Buffel pasture, but may also occur with Kikuyu or Setaria. It is caused by the oxalic acid in the grass which “ties up” the calcium, creating a calcium deficiency in the horse. The problem is often worse when the pasture has fresh growth. It can be managed by providing a calcium supplement to all horses grazing these types of pasture.

BOTULISM: Botulism is one of the most powerful toxins in the world. It may live in the soil for many years. Botulism is often a problem in phosphorus deficient country, as the stock may come in contact with it when chewing sticks, rocks or bones. Feeding a phosphorus supplement may help, as this will reduce the risk of stock coming in contact with the toxin.

TRACE MINERALS: Agricon Products include trace minerals in almost all of their supplements. Copper, Cobalt, Iodine, Selenium and Zinc are all important for various functions. It can be difficult to identify these deficiencies individually so the simplest way is to include them all in the mix.

Copper deficiency may be a cause of poor fertility and can also cause ‘sway back’ in lambs. Copper is important in wool for mechanical strength. Copper deficiency may cause poor pigmentation in cattle and horses. Cobalt is important in the formation of haemoglobin.

Cobalt deficiency causes poor growth in lambs and calves and they can become anaemic.

Iodine deficiency may be manifested by general weakness and animals may be born blind, hairless or dead. Iodine deficiency affects quality and quantity of wool growth.

Selenium deficiency causes muscular degeneration (White Muscle Disease) in calves and lambs. Selenium deficiency can also cause retained afterbirth. Selenium deficiency also restricts wool growth.

Zinc deficiency causes reduced feed intake, poor growth rate and cracks can occur in the hooves. Wool may loose its crimp and fall out.

Whenever you see this symbol through out the brochure you will find some usefully tips to maximise outcomes.

Storage GuidelinesBy nature of the product, molasses blocks packaged in cardboard cartons will tend to absorb moisture from the air, especially when they may also contain urea and/or salt.

This can result in molasses ‘bleed’ where a dark stain will appear on the outside of the packaging. While not affecting the quality of the product, it does not look good to the consumer.

This is one of the small disadvantages of using cardboard packaging. However we feel that the positive benefits of having packaging that is both edible and biodegradable is a better option than moving to plastic packaging.

Below are a few tips to help maintain the appearance as long as possible.

1. Retain the original stretch wrap on the pallet until required for sale.

2. Store away from areas of direct sunlight.

3. At the end of the season, remaining stock on opened pallets should be re-wrapped to preserve the packaging.

Molasses Blocks

Why use Bloat Ade? • Contains 10% alcohol

ethoxylate 12A23

• Palatable molasses based block

• Convenient and easy pasture management

• No individual dosing of animals

Legume bloat occurs when cattle or sheep consume highly digestible bloat prone legumes. The soluble leaf proteins produce very stable foam which prevents the valve releasing gas from the rumen. The alcohol ethoxylate in Bloat Ade breaks down the foam allowing the gas to escape. If possible allow stock to access blocks prior to the anticipated season.

APVMA Approval No. 58042/1203

Directions for use:• Remove cattle with greatly distended rumens from

the pasture immediately.

• Exercise animals - walking can help to release trapped gas from the rumen.

• Feed low protein hay or straw

• The block should be readily accessible by all cattle so place out a minimum of 2 weeks supply of blocks with no more that 10 head per block.

BLOAT CONTROL - Bloat Ade

NUTRITION TIP:Always place out bloat blocks well before the bloat season is expected to start, at least one week prior.

Calcifort - STUBBLE SUPPLEMENT

Excellent calcium molasses blocks with trace elements. Designed for cattle, sheep & goats needing calcium while grazing pastures & stubbles

Calcifort +10 provides a good level of calcium, as well as protein meal, urea, and molasses and is a very useful block to be fed when grazing stubble or dry feed. The protein meal and urea will help make up for the low protein of the stubble, while the molasses will provide a source of energy.

Calcifort is also available without urea. It is useful when a calcium supplement is required, eg. when feeding grain in the paddock.

NUTRITION TIP:For better utilisation of your stubble always provide a protein supplement.

Wheat, barley and sorghum are all low in calcium, so a calcium supplement should be provided when feeding these grains.

Optiphos lick blocks are suitable to be fed to cows running on low phosphorus soils where the added phosphorus will improve fertility. Ewes with lambs at foot will also benefit from Optiphos lick blocks because they contain effective levels of phosphorus and calcium. Phosphorus assists in the reduction of abortions, and mortality of young stock. Lactating animals require phosphorus to maintain milk production.

Horses grazing pasture that is made up of exotic grasses like Buffel and Kikuyu are at risk of developing Bighead (see page 3). Optiphos lick blocks contain 12% Calcium and are useful in the prevention of Bighead. The Optiphos lick blocks are hard, yet palatable and provide a convenient method of supplementing your livestock’s diet with trace minerals and a significant amount of phosphorus.

Phos N Pro has been specifically designed to supplement the major deficiences of pastures that limit livestock production in Northern Australia

Phos N Pro lick blocks contain phosphorus and urea which are important in fibre digestion, maintaining feed intake and healthy bone structure. Breeders that calve in good body condition will start cycling earlier. This means that breeders need good nutrition management. Phos N Pro can be fed to replacement heifers which will assist their growth phase to meet the production target of 650g/day for them to cycle at 15 months of age. Phos N Pro blocks are hard, palatable and weather proof.

Supersulf is one of the only molasses based, high sulphur blocks available on the market. This means that it is both weatherproof and palatable. Supersulf is formulated to be fed out when grazing forage sorghum to improve growth rates and reduce the risk of cyanide poisoning. While forage sorghum is being digested in the rumen, prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide) may be released, which can be fatal to stock. More commonly though, it may be present at low levels which can greatly reduce weight gains.

Forage sorghums are also low in sodium and the combination of supplementing with both salt and sulphur can have a substantial effect on the actual weight gains achieved.

Wetphos lick blocks contain high levels of phosphorus, which may greatly improve calving rates, and a reduced rate of abortions and lower calf mortality. The Wetphos formulation has been designed to be a hard, weatherproof but palatable supplement for cattle. The advantage of Wetphos is that it contains low levels of salt, which enables this product to withstand moist conditions. The energy from molasses and protein meal along with urea for added protein and generous levels of trace minerals, make Wetphos a superior supplement which can be fed out during the wet season.

Cowmix - PROTEIN & PHOSPHORUS (5, 10 or 20% Urea)

Cowmix is a Protein Meal based protein supplement, which also contains a high level of phosphorus, trace minerals and Vitamin A. It is designed to be used with poor quality feed, such as pasture that has “hayed off” from either frost or dry spell. Cowmix is available with either 5%, 10% or 20% urea, enabling you to choose the product which is best suited to the conditions on your property. It is a very useful supplement for breeders, particularly during the later stages of pregnancy and during lactation. Cowmix may also be used to help maintain growth rate after weaning. Cowmix should be fed free choice, preferably in a covered trough.

NUTRITION TIP:Cows that calve in good body condition (only the last two ribs should be visible), will start cycling earlier, improving your chances of getting a calf every year.

Why use Cowmix? • Improved digestibility of

dry feed

• Improved dry feed intake

• Improved calving rate and milk production

Phosmix - HIGH IN PHOSPHORUS

Phosmix is a palatable, high phosphorus mineral supplement. Its proven performance has made it one of our best selling supplements. Phosmix is designed to be used when the available feed contains sufficient protein and energy to meet the animal’s needs, but is lacking in phosphorus. Even in better types of country, lactating breeders and young growing stock who both have higher requirements for phosphorus, may not get enough phosphorus to meet their needs. Because Phosmix does not contain any urea, it is suitable to use in mixed grazing situations, such as cattle and horses in the same paddock. When horses are grazing improved pastures, for example Buffel or Kikuyu, Phosmix may be fed to help prevent Bighead. (See page 3)

NUTRITION TIP:Consider feeding breeders with calves at foot extra phosphorus, because their requirements are very high.

All troughs used for supplements should be protected from the weather to prevent spoilage.

Why use Phosmix? • Prevents calcium deficiency

in horses, aiding in the prevention of Bighead, so is useful in paddocks with a high content of exotic grasses

• Feeding Phosmix is useful in artificial insemniation programs for breeders as it helps them to cycle

• Increases feed intake in ruminants

• Prevents botulism in cattle

PROTEIN, PHOSPHORUS + SALT - Phosplus

Phosplus is an economical supplement for breeders. It contains higher levels of salt to help regulate intake. Phosplus is now available in various urea levels as well as the option of including Monensin. Phosplus contains 9% urea, as well as a wide range of trace minerals including copper, cobalt and selenium, which are all helpful in maintaining fertility.

NUTRITION TIP:Never feed high urea supplements to stock that are starving. See page 37 for more urea feeding tips.

It is more economical to start supplementing early in the season before stock are losing weight, rather than starting later and trying to recover lost condition.

Prosup is a range of high protein dry licks for ruminants, based on protein meal. These products also contain useful levels of phosphorus and optimum levels of the essential trace minerals. The Prosup range starts at 0% urea going through to the top of the range at 30% urea. This means stock can get accustomed to supplementary feeding at a lower urea level, before working through the range as the quality of the available paddock feed deteriorates. Prosup also contains Zeolite, which is thought to improve urea utilisation in the rumen. This range is formulated to be self-limiting on intake, enabling it to be fed free choice.

Why use Prosup? • Improved digestibility

of dry feed

• Assists in weight gain

• Improved calving and lambing percentages

Why use Protomol? • Balances calcium/

phosphorus ratio

• Helps to regulate intake

• Helps to maintain body condition

• Corrects phosphorus deficiency in molasses

Molasses is often used as a dry season supplement, because it is an excellent source of energy. However, it is very low in protein and phosphorus.

Protomol contains both of these essential nutrients, so that when mixed with molasses, it creates an economical and balanced supplement. Protomol also contains urea, salt and a wide range of trace minerals. As Protomol contains protein meal, it is best fed out in troughs, rather than roller or licker drums. Once stock have adapted to the Protomol/molasses mixture, extra urea may be added to boost the effectiveness of the supplement. This will also help to regulate intake. Check with the team at Agricon Products for details of how much extra urea to add.

Urea is a very valuable product for feeding to ruminants. As a protein source it is approximately five times cheaper than protein meal. However if not properly used urea can be toxic, so it is very important to follow these guidelines for its use.

1. Never feed supplements with high urea levels to starving stock. Once ruminants are starved the number of microbes in the rumen becomes very low and they cannot utilise the ammonia produced from the urea. The level of ammonia in the blood may rise high enough to cause sickness or death. If stock are starving feed out legume hay, protein meal or Prosup 5 for 3 days to rebuild the number of microbes in the rumen.

2. Start on a low level of urea. eg. For sheep use Optigro 7 and cattle may be started on Drimol 10 with care.

3. Ensure that there are enough feeding points so that all stock are able to access the supplement.

4. The toxicity of urea reduces as the rumen becomes adapted. In the initial days of urea supplementation, stock may get urea poisoning if they consume 450mg of urea per kg of live weight in a short period (1 or 2 hours). After 14 days of continuous supplementation, this level rises to around 1000mg of urea per kg of live weight. If supplementation ceases for any reason, this adaptation is lost after only 3 days.

5. When using dry feed mixes, eg Prosup 10, it is a good practice to place a Drimol 10 block near the dry lick trough. This ensures that if the Prosup 10 trough runs out, stock will still have access to a urea supplement.

6. We recommend caution when feeding blocks with more than 10% urea to sheep.

NUTRITION TIP:To get cows in calf every year, your breeders will need to be cycling within 80 days of calving. This will require careful nutrition management.
