English lesson: Outlines

• Before you write, what do you need to do?– THINK of what to write– ORGANIZE or PLAN how to write it

• An OUTLINE will help you do this– Put all your ideas down in point form

(brainstorm)– Order your ideas so it flows logically

• If you do this, your writing will improve• English, Social Studies mark will go up

Outline Example

• Example: Let’s write about

Outline• Thesis (main topic):• Introduction:

– First sentence: how to introduce topic– State the thesis (DIRECTLY and CLEARLY)– Say what the next paragraphs are about and how they relate to the

thesis• Body paragraphs:

– Transition, how it relates to the thesis or last sentence– Say what you want in this paragraph, use EXAMPLES

• Conclusion:– Say that you said what you said– State the thesis again

IT Research Project• Find a piece of modern technology that

you have or want to buy.• Find info about it

– Specs – what do they mean?– Save the websites for a BIBLIOGRAPHY

• Do an OUTLINE– Explain the specs (numbers!)– Why do you want one? What can it do?

• Due – Outline due first, then write
