ACTIVITY 4 • (T1) and (T2) with one ball • All players must have an attacker and a defender.• (D1) and (D2) are to start in quality starting position.• (A1) and (A2) must pass to each other twice before they pass to the
opposite thrower and reset• To begin with have attackers 50% pace and no lob passes• Progress with adding another attacker and defender• To make the drill fun, make it a game with a point system
• Intercepts = 2 points• Tip and chase = 1 point• Attackers sccessfully getting the ball to the other thrower = 1
point

ACTIVITY 5• Team focus is on first to the ball• Start at centre pass, then throw ins.• Have the same point system, attackers score by getting a goal.
FIRST BALL CONTEST
• Use quick running steps forward and backwards to intercept
• Two handed intercepts only.
“QUALITY starting position”:• Eyes up• Head slightly turned to see
opponent and the ball• Shoulder and body to start in the
middle of opponent's body• On the balls of your feet, knees
slightly bent ready to take off
ACTIVITY 1• Set up three cones in a triangle • (T1) and (T2) passing to each other• (D1) tracks (A1) and the ball being
passed between throwers• Throwers to drop a surprise ball in
front of cones for (D1) to pick up
• Defenders to have a “Quality starting position”
• Encourage good communication between defenders
• When shadowing your attacker dont tuck your chin in to your chest, get your head up and with change of pace use fast running steps to intercept, no lunging
• Ensure defenders are employing a quality starting position.
• All tips are chased down and brought back down the court with defenders attacking to the centre circle
What do you want to achieve from FIRST TO THE BALL DRILL: • Change of speed from the cone to thrower• Competiveness in positioning to get first to the ball• Quick footwork to recover in repeating to next thrower

ACTIVITY 2:• Set up 4 cones in a box• Attacker (A1) leads angular
forward or back space to receive pass from (T1)
• Defender (D1) can come out of the square to intercept but (A1) must stay in the box
• Repeat with 5 continuous passes, rest & repeat.
• Ready to go on balls of your feet to intercept
• Do not lunge, use running steps to intercept seeing the line of the ball
• Two hands to intercept, balance and pass

opponent and the ball• Shoulder and body to start
in the middle of opponent's body

• Variety of attacking movements receiving in the forward and back space
• When having all attackers able to move within the third, ensure defenders are defending their player from the second they come into their space and not when they come up to them

by (D1) and (D2) • Attackers to lead to left on 45 degree
angle receive a pass each then pass to opposite thrower
• Defenders (D1) and (D2) to intercept • Repeat
ACTIVITY 4• Separate the centre third into four equal areas “A”, “B”, “C” and “D” • In each area have an attacker (A1), (A2), (A3) and (A4) with bibs on• Add defence (D1), (D2), (D3) and (D4) using quality starting position
and defending one on one • Attackers start with the ball and pass around square clockwise and
anti-clockwise, no passing across the square diagnolly• If the ball is intercepted by a defender then they become attackers
and attackers become defenders until they intercept again• Progress with attackers being able to move anywhere in the centre
third and defenders staying in allocated areas (D2) in area “A”, (D1) in area “B”, (D3) in area “D” and (D4) in area “C”
ACTIVITY 5• Set up various scenarios; throw ins and centre passes• First team to 10 points• Intercept = 2 points, Tip and chase = 1 point

FIRST PHASE: MOVEMENT COACHING NOTES:

ACTIVITY 1• In groups of 4 • (T1) and (T2) and one ball• (D1) tracks attacker (A1)
watches the ball being passed by throwers and with an explosive drive intercepts between the throwers
ACTIVITY 2• Repeat changing cones from
left side to right side of the throwers
• Repeat with attacker being able to come and receive a pass if defender (D1) is floating off
• Use “Quality starting position” described in 15s session
• Vision for both opponent and the ball
• Explosive drives onto the ball to intercept
• Defenders to come off the body when they sight the ball in motion
• Use “Quality starting position”
• Good communication in announcing who has the intercept
• Do not tuck your chin into your chest when tracking the attacker
• Keep running through to intercept no stopping or lunging
• This is a great activity to challenge your team to apply a quality starting position and contest the ball in competitive situations
ACTIVITY 3• Set up two groups with one ball each• Each group has two throwers, two attackers and two defenders• Throwers (T1), (T2), (T3) and (T4) set up 5ft away from each
other. • They can pass to each other or the attacker in front • Defenders to intercept first ball or deny attacker from being
free
ADDING DEFENCE ON COURT ACTIVITY 4• Groups of 4 with a ball each • Designate a playing area per group• Thrower must double play, defenders may need to swap to
pick up an intercept• Defenders to put 3 feet hands over and position on an angle to
see oncoming attacking lead• Practise various scenarios to simulate first ball contest
• (GK) side line long pass outlet to (WD)• (WA) side line pass to a (GS) leading middle or side• (C) side line pass to (GA) leading to middle or side• (GD) side line pass to (C) leading to middle or side
ACTIVITY 5 • Place players into positions for half court• Have defenders score a point from intercepting the ball and attackers
for shooting a goal. • First to 10 points wins, then repeat.
