“I have always had a penchant for a good idea especially when the idea is imbued with tremendous precision that ultimately serves the purpose of its intent. For me, the idea of good hospitality for artistes and event goers that is focused on their wellbeing is a very good idea”, Amb. Vickie Robert Okere.

The Vickie Robert Hospitality Outfit, a world class hospitality company based in Dublin, was established in 2011 by Amb. Victoria Okere, AfricaWorld talked to her after the investiture in Abuja as a Justice of Peace. Excerpt:

AFRICAWORLD NEWSPAPER: What is the full title of the recognition and can you enlighten our readers more?

AMB.VICKIE ROBERT OKERE: The full title of my recognition is Ambassador for Peace (AFP). The Ambassadors for Peace Initiative, has become the world’s largest and most diverse network of peace leaders. They come from all walks of life representing all races, religions, nationality and cultures, and commit themselves to: Stand on the common ground of universal moral principles, committed to promoting reconciliation, overcoming barriers, and building peace. Form a global network of leaders representing the religious, racial, and ethnic diversity of the human family, as well as all disciplines of human endeavor. Participate in peace initiatives and programs that promote reconciliation and cooperation beyond traditional boundaries of religion, race, ethnicity, and nationality. Promote and practice the ethic of “living for the sake of others” as the guiding principle for building world

peace and a global community.

AWN: What is the significance of the Ambassadorial Award?

AMB: The Ambassadorial award is an Ambassador for Peace award. The award is as significant as the need for peace is. The award came from an international NGO called the Universal Peace Federation, which has a special consultative status at the UN. I think that this award is a special calling to do more for a peaceful world and for my nation to become a nation of peace. As you know, everyone without exception is yearning for peace despite the situation of our troubled world. So, as an Ambassador for Peace, I have been “ordained” as a champion of peace.

AWN: How did they arrive at the choice of a top blogger in Ireland?

AMB: The award was a special feature of an event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Niger ia’s amalgamation. The organizers were looking out for exemplary Nigerians, preferably couples, who have shown commitment to national unity and peace. The Nigerian organizers identified my husband and I and we were contacted. They had their criteria and I think we met the criteria as it was not about money at all.

AWN: You combine your job as a nurse with blogging and celebrity hospitality service, how easy is that?

AMB: I must confess, I sometimes pause and ask myself on how I’ve been able to joggle all these things but I have come to realise that, when you are passionate about what you do, it then becomes easy! I bless God for

giving me an understanding family who believes in my dream.

AWN: You recently returned from Nigeria, how is the country in view of the Boko Haram onslaught?

AMB: The Boko Haram onslaught is a very terrible and unfortunate situation. I am hopeful that the Nigerian government with all of us shall eventually overcome their activities.

AWN: What are your plans now that you have moved up?

AMB: I want to use this new international recognition to create a positive image for Nigeria here in Ireland and work to support peace initiatives in Nigeria. I believe that we all need to work together to make Nigeria, a peaceful nation

GOSSIP

G O S S I PIf We Always Feel Cheated in a Relationship

In a relationship, married or not… You should read this.

“When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes.

Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why?

I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn’t love her anymore. I just pitied her!

With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company. She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now.

The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didn’t have supper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Jane. When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and was asleep again.

In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn’t want anything from me, but needed a month’s notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month’s time and she didn’t want to disrupt him with our broken marriage.

This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day. She requested that every day for the month’s duration I carry her out of our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd request.

I told Jane about my wife’s divorce conditionsShe laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully.

My wife and I hadn’t had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mommy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don’t tell our son about the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside the door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn’t looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair was graying! Our marriage had taken

its toll on her. For a minute I wondered what I had done to her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life to me. On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was growing again. I didn’t tell Jane about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday workout made me stronger.

She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.

Suddenly it hit me… she had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head.

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it’s time to carry mom out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly; it was just like our wedding day.

But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn’t noticed that our life lacked intimacy. I drove to office…. jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my

mind…I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore.

She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I said, I won’t divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn’t value the details of our lives, not because we didn’t love each other anymore. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart. Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away. At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, I’ll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed – dead. My wife had been fighting CANCER for months and I was so busy with Jane to even notice. She knew that she would die soon and she wanted to save me from the whatever negative reaction from our son, in case we push through with the divorce.— At least, in the eyes of our son—- I’m a loving husband…

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse’s friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!

Over the three day event other significant performances from Nigerian playwright Tess Onwueme; Afro roots musical group Eme and Heteru; and power poetry by Ikeogu Oke with instrumentalist Osuji Ngozi Michael will be featured.

This will be Brown’s fifth Achebe Colloquium on Africa. The 2012 colloquium focused on governance, security and solutions to peace in Africa. The 2011 colloquium explored several challenges facing the region, including the Arab Spring and the crisis in Darfur. The 2010 colloquium focused attention on three African nations — Rwanda, Congo, and Nigeria — and the crucial issues impacting the countries, the continent, and the world. The inaugural 2009 colloquium addressed the problems and prospects of the 2010 Nigerian elections.

Mr Shatter stepped down after a series of scandals related to complaints from a Garda whistleblower dogged his last few months in office.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has confirmed it in the Dáil saying he had resigned after getting the report of Seán Guerin into Sergeant Maurice McCabe’s allegations.

The 300-page independent review of allegations of wrongdoing and

malpractice in the force has found inadequate investigation and analysis of the issues raised by serving Sergeant Maurice McCabe.

Mr Shatter has taken responsibility for it since the report is critical of the Department of Justice as well as a number of other agencies.

In his resignation letter (below) Mr Shatter said: “I am anxious that any controversy that may arise on publication of the report does not distract from the important work of the Government or create any difficulties for the Fine Gael or Labour parties in the period leading in the European and local government elections.

“It is my judgment that the only

way in which such controversy can be avoided is by my offering you my resignation.”

The report on the McCabe affair is to be published on Friday morning.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said Mr Shatter resigned after the report found him to be “inadequate” in his obligation to be independent in his investigation of the whistleblower allegations.

“The Minister having read the

report and considered its implications has sent me his resignation which I have accepted with regret,” he said.

Mr Kenny said he did not demand Mr Shatter’s resignation and added that he was not expecting anyone else to stand down over the controversy.

The Government is now expected to set up a full-scale State inquiry into the affair.

Mr Kenny says he will announce Mr Shatter’s replacement in Cabinet later this evening or tomorrow morning.

He explained why Mr Shatter decided to go after reading the Guerin report into Garda misconduct from

the Maurice McCabe dossier. It comes as Mick Wallace considers

legal action against Mr Shatter after the Data Protection Commissioner last night found that the former Justice Minister broke the law last year with comments about the independent TD.

Mr Wallace had called for Mr Shatter to stand down and said the Taoiseach and Labour’s continuing defence of Mr Shatter was undermining their own support among the public.

Deputy Wallace had said he wants to know if what the Minister did is

acceptable.

“Is it ok if the Minister for Justice of the day is allowed to break the law, be it a civil law, and remain in office?” he said.

“If anyone had put it to the Taoiseach five or six years ago when he was in opposition he would have laughed and said ‘Why in God’s name are you asking me that? Fine Gael are the party of law and order’.”

The Da ta Protection Commissioner’s ruling relates to a RTÉ Prime Time programme last year, when Mr Shatter and Mr Wallace appeared alongside each other to debate the penalty points issue.

Mr Shatter revealed information which he said he received verbally from the then garda commissioner, Martin Callinan.

The data protection commissioner found that Mr Callinan did not breach the act, but that the minister was bound by “obligations of non-disclosure” of “personal data”.

A spokesman for the Taoiseach had last night said Enda Kenny has confidence in Mr Shatter.

NEWSPOLITICS

“I am running for People Before Profit candidate for Dublin in the Euro elections in order to fight against the injustice being inflicted on the Irish people.

The EU is a very elitist institution dominated by politicians who serve the interests of the big corporations, the banks and the rich. Since 2008 it has inflicted huge injustice on the ordinary people in this country in order to bail out the Irish and European banks. Prompted by the EU Commission and the European Central Bank, along with the IMF, we have had six years of cutbacks and austerity culminating in the unfair water charges

If am elected I will be a voice standing challenging these policies, priorities and standing up for interests of the ordinary people of Ireland.

But when I say the people of Ireland I mean all the people living here, regardless of race, colour or nationality.

Combating racism

As a Dublin City Councillor for five years I have encountered racism – against Africans, Eastern Europeans, Muslims, Travellers and so on – in many forms. I have always made it my business to fight against racism and will continue to do so in the EU parliament.

I reject completely the idea that Ireland’s many economic and social problems, for example our lack of jobs and affordable housing, are caused by the presence here of ‘foreigners’. Some politicians and newspapers encourage this prejudice and you hear it out there on the streets, but it is totally wrong.

Ireland had even higher unemployment in the 1930s and 1980s when there was no immigration and for the same reason we have it now– economic recession in which businesses lay people off or don’t hire them because they won’t invest.

There is no real shortage of houses in Ireland, large numbers of houses stand empty, just a shortage of houses people can afford. This is not caused by there being too many people – black or white, Irish or ‘foreign’ - but by poverty and government policies.

What we need is not racist discrimination or scapegoating but government action to create more jobs and social housing for all. Far from being a threat to Irish society I believe immigrants enrich it with their knowledge, skills, labour and vibrant different cultures.

The EU with its policy of ‘Fortress Europe’ designed particularly to keep out immigrants from Africa contributes to the spread of racist attitudes. If elected I will oppose this policy and work on the principle that immigrants should be welcome here in Ireland and throughout Europe – which, after all, grew rich out of the exploitation of Africa and the rest of the Third World.

Asylum seekers, refugees and direct provision

A particular injustice that flows from this fortress Europe attitude is Ireland’s (and Europe’s) shameful treatment of asylum seekers. Anyone who comes here as a refugee is immediately treated with suspicion and hostility and far too many applications are turned down. Approximately 95% of asylum seekers get their applications rejected, the highest rate of rejection of any EU member. Between 2005 and 2012, 2,259 people were deported from Ireland, including 973 Nigerians. This is shameful.

Also unfair and oppressive is the system of direct provision which prevents asylum seekers working while waiting for their applications to be processed and condemns them to the extreme poverty of living on only €19.10 a week, with only €9.60 per child, in wretched hostel-type accommodation. Many families are kept on Direct Provision for appallingly long periods, many years in some cases, so that children grow up in these dreadful conditions.

I am opposed to Direct Provision and call for asylum seekers to be allowed to work and live in the community. Like immigrants as a whole they are not a threat but a potential benefit to our society.

Racist attacks.

Another vicious feature of racism in our society are physical and verbal racist attacks and abuse in the streets, on people’s homes and on their businesses. African taxi drivers are particularly subject to abuse and discrimination. These should be properly dealt with by the police but People Before Profit believes that more than just a police response is required. We also need a collective response from people in the local community to show solidarity with the victims of racist attacks and to make clear to the racists that their behaviour is unacceptable.

I and my party, People Before Profit, have often been involved in helping to organise such anti-racist actions, for example against a racist attack on a shop in Tallaght and the racist threatening letter sent to the Mosques

earlier this year.

People power and resistance.

I see fighting racism as an integral part of the overall struggle against an unjust system. At the start of this article I spoke of ‘standing up for the interests of the ordinary people’. If elected I will do this to the best of my ability in the European Parliament and I will aim to be voice for working people and all the downtrodden and oppressed.

But challenging any of the many injustices in this society involves more than just having a strong voice in the European Parliament, the Daíl or the council chamber. It needs ordinary people to take action themselves, to come out on to the streets in protest, to let the council, the government and the European Commission and Parliament see the meaning of real people power.

This is why I say to the readers of Africa World, in the words of the great Bob Marley, ‘Stand up! Stand up for your Rights!’.”

A Pledge

If elected I pledge to take only the average workers wage and to donate the rest of the huge MEP salary to campaigning for the rights of the people.

The publisher of Esabod blog is one blogger you cannot afford to ignore. Blunt, contentious, Esther makes you think, and AfricaWorld TV spoke to her. Here is part of the interview:

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

My Name is Esther Tokunbo Abodern, I am 53 years old and I live in Co. Kildare with my Children. I am the Editor & Publisher of Esabod blog. I love working as a writer, I am presently writing a book titled “Husband From Hell” Actually, it will be my first novel to be published. My Family owns the Punch newspaper company in Nigeria. I studied IT and Mass Communication at CMI

You are one of the top bloggers in Ireland, how did you arrive at the scene?

My idea of blogging is so weird and amazing. I am an outspoken and bold person that love to share my feelings to others. As a humanitarian activist, I want my voice to be heard within Africans in Ireland. I dislike dishonest people. I love straightforward people, and people who are down-to-earth. I love open-minded people because I can proudly say I am one. If someone offends me, I walk up to that person and tell him how I feel and I forget it immediately. But some individuals would harbor grudges in their minds. Honestly, I am like a book; one can read me in just five

minutes. I am very transparent. Blogging is just a way of letting go of whatever is on your mind, just blurting your thoughts out onto a web page when you feel the need.

What do you blog about?

I am a Global news blogger and blogs African lifestyle in Disapora.

Are you a professional blogger or you do combine it with another profession?

I am a professional blogger and a web designer

What is the difference between being an Ireland based top blogger and Nigeria?

There really should not be a difference, and at the same time, a difference. Blogging is a matter of what topic or issue you want to blog about - politics, gossips, academics, football, sports, celebrities, etc In Nigeria, all these types of blogs exist, as they do in Ireland. In fact, since the Internet is a world-wide, global medium, then that means there really should not be any difference. But in Nigeria, due to our underdevelopment, the difference is ACCESS to the Internet to read or write blogs.

Where do you go from here?

I did not stumble into Blogging by accident.

It is something I wanted to do and I have realised it. I want to take it to the level where access to my blogs and the information I give will be transmuted into a media component, that is either as a magazine, newspaper or television or radio program which will be known, appreciated and respected worldwide for the quality and professionalism of their products and services to humanity in general and Nigeria, my country, in particular, without prejudice to religion, political leanings and ethnicity.

What are your hobbies?

I love watching movies, reading and swimming.

Any other information about yourself and blog for our readers?

Never change who you are in order to make others comfortable with who they are.

Never ever give anybody in this world the power to make you hate yourself or the power to make you feel you’re not good enough, deserving enough, and make you believe you won’t amount to anything. The only Being that has the right to judge you is God. Anyone else can try but don’t pay them any attention.

There’s absolutely nothing you can’t achieve. All you need is will, drive, incredible courage and a lot of faith

Click the “Log” tab button right next to the Time Limits and they you can view all the activities and application used for an hour, week, month and even year.Note: This is process is just to control their stay on the Mac computer and does not restrict the pages viewed online, that is another option altogether.

IT

We always concentrate on Windows because of its popularity and user friendly nature. Many downloads will always be standard for Windows but in recent times, websites and software developers have incorporated the Apple brand to further standardise the industry. Having said so, there still some software that cannot be integrated into the Apple environment or platform.

In one of Tech_Pilot’s editions, parental control and Internet monitoring was treated to guide what our children or under age do online, because, they are the most vulnerable when it comes to the concept of the Internet. Today’s topic, will consider the Mac (Apple) users and how the children can be protected as well as monitored. The Apple Mac is designed differently from the Windows platform even though some similarities exist, any Windows user switching to Apple devices will definitely need time to adapt. Some smart users can install windows alongside the on the Mac OS (Operating System), a task that require some level of expertise.

The Parental control gives an

opportunity to control the time limits online and disable some unwanted sites. It is possible to specify how many hours a day each person is allowed on the Mac, and declare certain hours (like sleeping hours) off limits.

Anyway, if you have the Mac and intend to keep an eye on your under aged children and their activities online, these are the steps to follow:

Click Open Parental Controls at the bottom of the Users & Groups pane. Click Enable Parental Controls, if necessary.

In the screen, there are option to select the tab (Apps, Web, People, Time Limits, Other). The “App” is the default and will restrict Applications downloading.

Let’s concentrate on the Time limits so, select the “Time Limit”: With three Options, you can select how much time they need for Weekdays, Weekends & Bedtimes. By the checking the box for “Limit Computer use to”, you drag to

suit the amount of time required, do the same for Weekend time Limits and check the box for “School nights & Weekend” to select the bed and wake up time for your kids. When all these are selected, you have completed the time limits for your children for the Mac computer use.

An interesting feature with this time limit control is as follows: When time limits have been applied, the user can check to see how much time they have left to go off on the Mac before your digital iron fist slams

down. When they click the menu-bar clock (where it now says the current time), a menu appears, complete with a readout that says, for example, “Parental Controls: Time Remaining 1:25.”

One final tip, it is possible to track the computer usage of your child, view the site they have visited, who they have been chatting with and other information of their activities on the Internet.
