One example of the numerous applications is molecular oncology

Cancer cells are cultured in incubators for the purposes of research. Their stage of develop-ment can easily be assessed with Primo Vert – a routine step that requires a consistent work-flow and fast results. The microscopic image must provide absolutely reliable information on whether the cells are adhering to the bottom of the vessel, which means they are intact and can be used in further experiments. On the other hand, if they are floating in the nutrient medium, they are stressed or already dead and thus unfit for further use.

the perfect tissue culture phase contrast microscope.

The walk away mode turns off the light automatically (in addi-tion to manual on/off-function) after 15 minutes – to save energy and prolong lifetime of the bulb.

Modular illumination with halogen light or with longer lasting LEDs. The advantages of LEDs are the stable colour temperature, only one tenth in power consumption, significantly longer lifetime – therefore a lower cost solution.

Special Skin-friendly material coated on all operating elements.

Universal phase slider for all objectives: For ease of use there is one phase ring (Ph 1) available for 10x, 20x and 40x – this means no need to change phase positions when switching magnifications.

Increased working distance through easy removal of the con-denser, e. g. for roller-bottles.

The Primo Vert Monitor – A New Viewing Perspective

With the new Primo Vert Monitor*, Carl Zeiss offers an ideal microscope for

multi-observation purposes. Several users can look at and discuss the microscope

image at the same time without having to adjust any eyepieces individually.

The new “pass by mode” in microscopy. Just walk and check your cell lines in the pass by mode:

• Easy inspection of living cells is possible, i.e. without hav-ing to look through eyepieces.

• Ergonomic quick check of living cells. The monitor can be tilted from 45° up to 80°. So users can easily adjust the LCD monitor to their individual posture.

• Convenient image storage by the push-to-save camera to SD memory card without PC connection. Additionally a computer can be connected to the USB port on the stand.

• No requirement to remove eyeglasses in order to check the microscopic images.

The First Laboratory Microscope – With Approved Ergonomics

A number of attractive details are designed to

guarantee the ergonomic and reliable handling

of Axio Lab.A1.

TUV-approved ergonomics. Axio Lab.A1 places strong

emphasis on ergonomic features, because continuous

microscope use is often associated with discomfort, par-

tic ularly in the neck.

With Axio Lab.A1 users are able to examine slides with a

favorable viewing position, keeping the neck and shoulder

muscles relaxed. The height of the microscope is continu-

ously adjustable by 50mm. In addition the tube can be

swiveled from 8°-33° continuously.

IC²S optics, the Infi nity colour-corrected system, is avail-

able only from Carl Zeiss. The system guarantees brilliant,

colour-corrected and high-contrast results, meeting all the

demands placed on image quality.

Guaranteed durability. The more a microscope is used,

the more worthwhile it is to invest in quality. Axio Lab.A1

guarantees long lasting value and a long operating life.

The new multi-discussion system from Carl Zeiss is also

compatible for Axio Lab.A1. It is possible to achieve identi-

cal image orientations for all co-observers. All co-observers

see the same image as the main observer. And a luminous

pointer facilitates the identifi cation of specimen details for

discussion.

Skin-friendly materials enhance comfort. Many parts

of the stand are coated with soft-touch material: These

materials offer superior properties in comparison to metal

surfaces: less cold and higher friction.

Modular illumination. Convenient and easy-to-change

bulbs. The use of the novel warmlight LED in particular

offers the advantages of a long lifetime, energy saving and

halogen-like colour impressions in stained slides.

Integrated tool storage and cable rest in the stand back

fl ap. Tools, e. g. for centring of phase rings are always at

hand and cannot get lost. In addition, the tilted fl ap can

Axio Lab.A1 is designed for many uses. Microbiology, cy-

tology, hematology and pathology labs as well as those in

school and colleges will benefi t particularly.

Fluorescence microscopy in the lab

Axio Lab.A1 ensures easy-to-use LED-fl uorescence with

2 LED positions and the well known standard push-and-

click-modules from Carl Zeiss. In comparison to standard

HBO illumination the LED fl uorescence is much safer, more

energy effi cient, quicker and easier to use.

Additional advantages: No warm-up and cool-down times

and no need to change or adjust lamps.

The fl uorescent marker FITC is primarily used for antigen-

antibody reactions in the fi eld of immunology. FITC binds

to the antibody molecules and emits an intense green fl uo-

rescence upon excitation with the 470 nm LED.

Brightfi eld and darkfi eld microscopy

In the fi eld of hematology, the usual diagnostic approach

to blood disorders is blood counting and blood fi lm ex-

amination. During blood fi lm examination in brightfi eld

microscopy, the individual types of white blood cells are

counted. Axio Lab.A1 makes this task easier, because the

main operating elements of the microscope, such as the

stage drive, fi ne focus drive and light intensity are all reach

of one hand. This frees up the other hand.

Darkfi eld blood analysis is very useful for the early detection

of serious health conditions, because fi ne and unstained

structures can often not be seen in front of a bright back-

ground. This situation changes if the structures are illu-

minated from the side and viewed in front of the darkest

possible background. The structures then really seem to

light up. Darkfi eld is a useful detection method for minute

details, not easily detectable brightfi eld. It is produced by

indirect sample illumination resulting in bright structures on

a dark image background. Main fi elds of applications are

hematology and dermatology.

Axio Lab.A1 presents a fi ve position Abbe turret condenser

with darkfi eld and Phase contrast 1,2,3.

Polarization contrast is used to detect birefringent struc-

tures, such as crystals or fi bres. In medical microscopy it

helps to detect gout or asbestos.

light techniques continue to be the standard for many examinations in the clinical

area. The interfaces developed for the Axio Scope are unique. This brings completely

new fl exibility into routine microscopy.

All contrasting techniquesSurprising in this microscope class: the sheer variety of contrasting techniques that you can use for your applica-tions. Axio Scope offers you simply everything. The clas-sical methods of brightfi eld, darkfi eld, phase contrast – but also Differential Interference Contrast, DIC for short. You can also use the economical PlasDIC alternative from Carl Zeiss. Which means that this inexpensive inter-ference contrasting technique is available for the fi rst time with an upright microscope.

Individual confi guration: the transmitted-light beam pathThe transmitted-light beam path of Axio Scope provides impressive image contrast and homogeneous illumination. The great fl exibility in confi guring offered by Axio Scope is new and unique. At the front you have a 6-position fi lter wheel, which comes equipped with the integrated shutter. Individual grey and colour fi lters can easily be added. At the back you can also use an additional fi l-ter slider, which can also be confi gurated fl exibly so that nearly any combination of fi lters is possible. Moreover, if you decide on transmitted-light LED illumination, attenu-ating fi lters are unnecessary. LED or halogen? Standard illuminationYou can choose among three subunits optimized for the different geometries of the light sources. 1. Transmitted-light LED: durable, economical and adjustment-free, this illumination provides suffi cient intensity for stained his-tological preparations and other typical routine clinical tasks. 2. 50 W refl ector illumination: this offers more than enough light for all standard procedures such as brightfi eld and phase contrast. 3. 100 W halogen light, ideal for thick specimens and procedures that require a lot of light, such as DIC at high magnifi cations.

Flexible for interference contrast: the Abbe condenserThe possibility of equipping Axio Scope with anything from a very inexpensive bright fi eld condenser to a high-performance interference contrasting technique is new and unique in this class. This is made possible by two unusual interfaces: you simply equip your condenser with the modulator disc for darkfi eld and phase contrast when you need these methods. The modulator disc it-self has exchangeable modules. This allows you to use even PlasDIC, the inexpensive interference contrast from Carl Zeiss, at any time, simply by exchanging the modules.

ISCP: the Infi nity Space Camera PortFor all documentation tasks in transmitted-light applica-tions and only with Axio Scope: the Infi nity Space Camera Port, ISCP for short. This innovative feature offers you an additional option for using the interface in the infi nity space (see also infi nity space interface on pages 10/11). Instead of using this for refl ected-light refl ectors, you can use it for your applications in transmitted-light. That way, you gain a fully functioning camera port, independent of the choice of tube that can be added at any time.

The 6x fi lter wheel comes equipped with an integrated shutter. Grey and colour fi lters can be mounted individually – easily and conveniently since the fi lters are clicked readily into the corresponding holders when the cover is open.

Versatile and innovative: the light sourcesThe illumination options of Axio Scope are versatile and simple for the customer to operate. A completely new lamp housing was developed for the HBO 50, whose burner can be removed with the drawer for a particularly simple and convenient change of burner. The HBO 100 comes as a standard or in a self-adjusting version. And without expen-sive changes of burner for a very long time – instead of operating constantly, the LEDs turn on only when they are used in the beam path. Now Carl Zeiss offers a new integrated LED solution specially designed for routine applications in fl uorescence. The freely mountable LED turret allows you to you use up to 4 LED modules. Syn-chronized with the refl ector turret*, the correct LED is switched on automatically when a new refl ector module is swung in. The intensity can be regulated individually for any colour. Your settings are preserved even when you switch back and forth – an important plus because that way each of your different fl uorescence channels is optimally illuminated at any time.

* Because of the coupling of refl ector turret and LED module turret, the refl ector turret is not exchangeable with this upper part.

The specimen space can be extended practically as much as you want. A strong

plus point, because there are practically no limits with regard to size of specimen.

Depending on the confi guration the specimen space can be varied continuously:

for specimen thicknesses from 0 to 110 mm.

Where there are no limits to heightThe great scalability of the specimen space is an impor-tant basis for the range of uses of Axio Scope. In addi-tion to the z travel range, it can be infl uenced in several places. 1. You can simply lower the stage carrier at the dovetail. 2. The condenser carrier can also be removed easily, which is practical when you want to lower the stage over the travel range. 3. You can gain space at the in-terface between the upper and lower parts by using a spacer. This comes in 30 or 60 mm versions. Depending on the confi guration, the specimen space can be extend-ed smoothly by up to 110 mm.

The modular interface concept allows easy handling, e.g. when using the spacer (30 mm or 60 mm) to enlarge the specimen space.

Well-conceived operating elementsSimply intelligent – the design of Axio Scope makes operat-ing the stand in routine work as comfortable and safe as possible for you. The intensity setting for the transmitted-light illumination is arranged ergonomically around the focus drive. Positioned on both sides close to the focus drive, it is extremely comfortable to operate. You can now adjust the illumination settings without taking your hand off the drive, with your right or left hand, just as you prefer.

New stagesAxio Scope offers a wide range of different stage versions. Two stage innovations are outstanding. 1. The ergo-stage: it enables you to move the stage drive 90 mm along the y axis into the position that is most comfort-able for you. It can be fi xed in that position and easily operated, without any need for you to change the posi-tion of your hand. 2. The new stage with a light special coating: this innovation is ideal for routine applications with a high throughput of specimens. In other words, when many slides are moved on the stage – which used to be the cause of early wear and tear on the stage sur-face. The extremely hard coating of the new stage shows no scratches, even in a hardness test.

Smart slide guideAn intelligent innovation that experienced clinicians in particular will welcome: the slide guide of Axio Scope alternatively allows you to guide the specimen by hand. Designed as a fl at plate, it is ideal for pushing your speci-men slides back and forth so that you can quickly obtain an overview. If you want to view certain areas at higher magnifi cation, simple let go and use the sensitive stage drive.

Ergonomic tubesDesigned for long laboratory work days, Axio Scope places a special emphasis on ergonomics. The viewing angles of the ergotubes are based on modern studies and are designed for fatigue-free and healthy posture. Two different models are available. The height-adjustable ergotubes with a travel range of 44 mm or the 50-15-50 ergo-phototube with upright correct-side image, which can be adjusted through 50 mm in height and depth at a fi xed viewing angle of 15° so as to be as comfortable as possible for your height. The eyepiece setting can also be varied with both tubes, enabling you to gain an additional 50 mm of height.
