Born in Uzbekistan in 1990, pianist Behzod Abduraimov wonthe 2009 London InternationalPiano Competition at age 18. His playing has been characterizedas stunning and electrifying.

Russian cellist Sergey Antonov, aprotégé of Mstislav Rostropovich, is one of the youngest cellists everawarded the gold medal at theworld’s leading musical Olympiad,the quadrennial InternationalTchaikovsky Competition. He has been praised for his romantic sensibility and warm, vibrant tone.He will be performing again with great Canadian pianist Bernadene Blaha.

Violinist Caroline Gouldingis the winner of the 2009Young Concert Artists International Auditions anda later recipient of an AveryFisher Career grant. Young shemay be, but her performancessuggest she is an artist with extensive seasoning.

The Arizona Friends of ChamberMusic celebrates its 65th anniversary not bypacking up for the retirement home, but by goingstrong as ever with the world’s leading chamber ensembles—and by launching something new: twoweekday matinee concerts! Both the venerableJuilliard Quartet and the dynamic young HarlemQuartet will each give two concerts. You’ll havethe choice of including their evening performancesin your Evening Series subscription package, orswitching to afternoons for their appearances—or attending all their concerts, each one with different repertory.

Besides getting reacquainted with Juilliard and being introduced to the Harlem Quartet, we’llwelcome back two of our most popular visiting ensembles, the Prazák and Pacifica Quartets, aswell as the outstanding Trio Solisti, which will premiere an AFCM commission from one oftoday’s most in-demand composers, LowellLiebermann. We’ll also enjoy another visit fromthe Ébène Quartet, which made its stunning Tucson debut in 2010.

Meanwhile, the Piano & Friends series presents cellist Sergey Antonov and pianistBernadene Blaha, returning after their impressive2010 engagement, and the local debuts of virtuosopianist Behzod Abduraimov and young Grammy-nominated violinist Caroline Goulding. Don’tmiss these exciting new artists!

Founded in 1946 by composer WilliamSchuman and original first violinist RobertMann (replaced by Joseph Lin in 2011), the Juilliard String Quartet continues toplay new works as if they were establishedmasterpieces, and established masterpieces

as if they were new. It is the paradigmatic Americanstring quartet ensemble.

Tucson loves the Pražák Quartet.In this we are joined by the European critical community,which has given its recordings numerous awards. Its performancewill include the premiere of another of our commissions, astring quartet by Jiri Gemrot.

Quartet in residence at theUniversity of Illinois and theUniversity of Chicago, thePacifica Quartet is on a

trajectory that will send it among the top ranks ofchamber ensembles worldwide. It will perform with the principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Anthony McGill.

Trio Solisti, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, has earned a reputation for soulful and passionate performances marked by soloistic virtuosity, electric energy, seamless ensemble playing, and thrilling abandon. It will premiere an AFCM-commissioned piano trio by Lowell Liebermann.

The Harlem Quartet declares that its missionis to advance diversity in

classical music while engaging young and new audiencesthrough the discovery and presentation of varied reper-toire. It accomplishes this by being amazing players withpanache, intelligence, and charisma.

In 2010 a medical emergency necessitated that theÉbène Quartet appear in Tucson as a trio with pianistGilles Vonsattel. That concert was a triumph. This season the Ebène Quartet brings to Tucson its blend of virtuosity and edge-of-your-seat excitement, whole, complete, and entire.
