Aviator BulletinsThe latest aviation industry hiring news and more.

CommutAir announced that it has reached an agreement with United Airlines to significantly increase the number of airplanes flown under the United Express brand by adding Embraer E145 jet operations to the company’s existing fleet of Bombardier turbo-prop aircraft. The agreement is subject to government approval.

Also pursuant to this agreement, CommutAir will implement a “Career Path Program” (CPP) for participating pilots. The program offers pilots the option to transition from CommutAir to United after certain requirements are met, including various service, performance record and accumulated flight hours requirements.

Pursuant to the currently anticipated fleet plan, the first Embraer E145 aircraft is expected to enter service in April 2016, and the fleet size and routes flown will grow through the addition of 40 Embraer E145 aircraft. Employee recruiting and FAA processes are already underway.

“This is a wonderful and attractive opportunity for CommutAir” said John Sullivan, Chairman of CommutAir. “In conjunction with this exciting growth plan, we will be implementing a program that offers a clear career path option to participating pilots. I appreciate working with United in offering more opportunities for our pilots and all of our employees,” he added.

CommutAir’s adoption of the CPP will be a special feature of the United Express agreement.

• Will enable qualified pilot applicants to opt into the CPP at the time of joining CommutAir and then seamlessly move to United after the applicable requirements are met.

• CommutAir’s planned growth will provide opportunities for promotions to Captain at CommutAir.

In an environment of instability in the regional industry, ExpressJet is making smart business decisions to support our growth and stability. We’ve extended contracts on a number of aircraft this year and into 2016, and we’ve introduced new work rules that improve our already great quality of life. LOA 14 introduces a number of positive changes in our work rules:

• Accelerated upgrades• Increased flexibility for reserve pilots• Created hybrid reserve lines to allow more pilots to hold

a line• Reduced short-call and ready reserve requirements• Increased ability for line-holders to modify their

schedules• Added a year of longevity pay to the first officer pay

scales• Improved pick-up window allows reserve pilots to better

control their schedule

Your path to the majors.

Compass Airlines serves over 4 million passengers annually, averaging over 220 daily departures to destinations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Compass operates a fleet of Embraer 170/175 aircraft on behalf of American Airlines (as American Eagle) and Delta Air Lines (as Delta Connection), and is in the midst of major growth, adding 20 Embraer 175 aircraft to its fleet in 2015. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Compass has crew bases in Minneapolis, Los Angeles and Seattle.

Compass Airlines has come a long way since it was founded eight years ago as a byproduct of restructuring at

Northwest Airlines. Less than a decade later, Compass is 1,600 employees strong and is on track to serve 4.3 million passengers in 2015. Its route map stretches from coast to coast, as far north as Alaska, and as far south as Mexico.

Compass operated solely as Northwest Airlink/Delta Connection until 2015, when it was selected by American Airlines to operate 20 new Embraer 175s under the American Eagle regional service brand.

This deal, which gave Compass its second mainline partner, increased the airline’s fleet size by 47% in less than a year and is projected to result in a 36% increase in passenger traffic between 2015 and 2016.

The Compass DifferenceMike White, the Director of Flight

Operations, is candid when asked what it is that’s unique about the Flight Operations department at Compass. “We know that the majority of our pilots want to eventually move on to a mainline carrier someday. But we want our pilots to enjoy the time that they do spend with us. Years later, when our pilots have gone on to achieve their long-term career goals, we want them to look back on their time at Compass as not only instrumental in getting them to where they are, but also as the most enjoyable experience of their professional career.”

Chief Pilot Jeremy Specht echoes that sentiment, stating, “It’s simple. We want our pilots to be happy. Part of how management accomplishes that is by jumping in the trenches and giving them as much support as possible. Flight Ops Management is visible and engaged in day-to-day operations, and my door is always open.” In fact, either the Chief Operating Officer or the Director of Operations personally welcomes each new hire pilot to the company during training, leading one new hire pilot from another regional to remark, “I didn’t even know who the Director of Operations was at my last job.”

This commitment to pilot satisfaction is clearly paying dividends, as 45% of pilots hired in 2015 left other regional airlines to come to Compass. These new hire pilots, who cite years spent on reserve and long upgrade times as contributing factors behind leaving their previous employers, are also drawn to the stellar reputation of the Compass pilot group and the airline’s commitment to pilot morale.

When pilots from other regionals arrive at Compass, they find that long stints on reserve and long upgrade times are a thing of the past. Compass pilots spend, on average, less than two months on reserve, and typically upgrade in 12-18 months, assuming Captain FAR requirements are met. Compass pilots also enjoy industry leading work and reserve rules, including a long call reserve option with a 24-hour call out. Paper manuals and charts are also a thing of the past—the flight deck at Compass is completely paperless, with each pilot utilizing the most recent version of the iPad Air.

Additionally, Compass first year pay is one of the highest in the regional airline industry, at $35.81 per flight hour, and the company will soon roll out a referral program that will give employees the opportunity to earn $1,500 for each pilot candidate they recommend that is hired and completes training. The company also offers commuting pilots four hotel stays per month, provides the ATP-CTP course for qualified applicants, and is one of only a handful regional airlines to participate in the ATP Flight School Tuition Reimbursement program.

Compass pilots can also take advantage of a great employee benefit package that includes:

• Paid training

• Medical, dental and life insurance

• 401(K) retirement plan

• Long-term disability coverage

• Performance-based bonuses

• Paid vacation and holidays

• Flight benefits

• Discounts on cruises, car rentals, hotels and other hospitality services

Compass is currently hiring up to 40 pilots per month and upgrades are taking place at a rate of 10-20 per month. Flying for Compass is a smart career move for pilots who want to move on to the majors. Compass pilots are in high demand by mainline carriers, as 100% of pilots who left the company voluntarily in 2015 left for pilot positions with a major airline.

Compass pilots represent some of the finest talent in aviation, and each one of them is committed to our mission of providing safe, reliable and on-time service. They love what they do, and that passion shines throughout our operation each day. Interview:

C: Do you recommend that applicants get to your headquarters city the day before and get a hotel room for the night?J: We currently arrange travel and hotel accommodations for the day prior to the interview.

Written test:

C: Is there a written or computer test? J: Written.

C: What can you recommend applicants study for that test? At what point is this test taken?J: We send a study guide. The test is taken early in the day.

C: Can you explain the ATP-CQP class that your company offers? J: We currently provide the ATP CTP course through one of our preferred vendors. We currently cover the cost of the course, the travel to our vendor and the hotel during the course.

C: Do you have a hiring bonus? Is there any specific criterion to qualify for the bonus?J: We do not offer a signing bonus. However, our first year pay is one of the highest in the regional airline industry at $35.81 per flight hour.

Introduction

Allegiant is more than an airline, it’s an innovative travel company dedicated to providing the best travel deals to its customers. Linking small U.S. cities to world-class leisure

destinations such as Florida, Las Vegas, Phoenix, California, Hawaii, and Myrtle Beach, S.C. Allegiant’s low-cost, high-efficiency, all-jet passenger airline offers air travel both on a stand-alone basis and bundled with travel products such as hotels, car rental and entertainment tickets. Allegiant was founded in 1997 in Fresno, Calif. In 1999, the company began scheduled passenger service between Fresno and Las Vegas utilizing a DC-9 aircraft. In June 2001, Maury Gallagher restructured the airline to a low-cost model and moved the headquarters and operations to Las Vegas, where they remain today. Allegiant’s unique strategy has allowed the company to remain profitable every quarter since 2003 despite industry challenges that include fluctuating fuel costs and an unstable economy. From 2002 through 2004, the

scheduled service business model was developed and, by 2004, Allegiant was flying MD80 aircraft from 13 small cities to Las Vegas offering bundled air and hotel packages. Allegiant became a public company in December 2006, under the Allegiant Travel Company name and trades on the NASDAQ under ticker ALGT. In March 2010, the company announced it signed a forward purchase agreement to acquire six Boeing 757-200 aircraft that enabled Allegiant to expand its leisure travel strategy into Hawaii with flights beginning in summer 2012. In August 2012, Allegiant entered a lease agreement to lease nine Airbus A319 aircraft, and in December 2012, announced its intention to acquire nine Airbus A320 aircraft. Today, the travel company continues its focus on linking travelers in small cities, generally at under served airports that have limited or no service, to top leisure destinations. Allegiant makes travel not only affordable, but also convenient. This is why Allegiant has been listed as one of American’s fastest growing companies.

Allegiant Fleet and Growth

Allegiant is currently looking at potentially hiring up to 140-200 pilots in 2016. This is due to growth and aircraft deliveries. Allegiant Air recently ordered our 50th A320 passenger jet. Currently Allegiant has two new base openings this year, Pittsburgh, PA (KPIT) will open 12/24/2015 with 1 A-319, and Cincinnati, OH (CVG) will open 01/6/2016 with 3 A-319 aircraft.

Training

As a new hire at Allegiant, pay begins on the first day of training. In addition to a base pay of 70 hours, hotel and transportation are also provided. New Training Center

To support the future growth, Allegiant was excited to announce the opening of the state-of-the-art training facility in Las Vegas (LAS). The multi-million-dollar 34,000-sqaure-foot training center houses, two Airbus A-320 full flight simulators, one A-320 advanced flight training device, an A-320 systems trainer and an MD-80 advanced flight training device. It also has evacuation training systems for MD-80s, Boeing 757 door and window evacuations, A-320 door and window evacuations, a fire trainer, and ditching equipment. An MD-80 simulator is planned later this year. Plans are underway for an East Coast Training Center in Orlando, construction to start in 2016.

Schedules

Because of Allegiant’s unique business model we fly mostly day trips. A majority of the schedules are 2 or 4 leg turns ending back in domicile every night. This makes it efficient for the company to overnight the aircraft in domicile and for pilots who enjoy sleeping in their own bed every night. Typical work days can vary, since we cater to the vacation traveler, most bases generally fly reduced schedules on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. This is when most folks start and end their vacations.

Pre Interview:Craig: What can an applicant do to increase their chances of being called for an interview?Mark: Continuing to build qualifications and attending recruiting events.

C: How critical is it to attend a job fair to get an interview? M: Not totally critical, we review all applications that we receive. It is nice to put a face with an application.

C: What is the best way to prepare for an interview with your company?M: Doing research and understanding the differences in Allegiant’s business model compared to others.

Interview: C: Do you recommend that applicants get to your headquarters city the day before and get a hotel room for the night?M: Yes, usually the interviews start at 7:30am and last about a half day.

C: Can you walk me through a typical day of interviews?M: We start with company presentation, followed by usual paperwork and finger printing, then a board interview with usually two Chief Pilots and someone with People Services. Lastly a 20-30min non-motion sim evaluation in our MD80 FTD.

C: What kind of questions can an applicant expect to be asked?M: Walk through your employment history, log book review, TMAAT questions, and scenario based questions

C: If the TMAAT question being asked does not apply to that applicant can that question be skipped?M: We wouldn’t ask it unless it applies to the applicant.

C: What are some of the biggest mistakes that applicants make during the interview process? M: Not coming fully prepared to interview i.e updated log books or not having researched the company. Also just not being themselves, we are trying to get know the individual better during this part of the process.

Simulator Evaluation:C: Do you have a simulator ride? M: Yes, Non motion MD80 FTD.

C: What types of scenarios should you expect in the simulator evaluation?M: Basic climb out, hold and into an approach. The person conducting the evaluation will manage all the configuration changes.

C: What are you looking for in the simulator evaluation?M: Basic airmanship skills, situation awareness and overall flight deck presence.

C: What are the biggest mistakes applicants make?M: Poor “stick and rudder” skills and general lack of professional discipline. A lot of applicants come out of advance glass equipment and can have trouble transitioning into the MD80 and 757 that don’t have full glass.

Post Interview:C: Do you tell applicants they are hired in person that day? M: Usually, Yes.

C: How soon can an applicant expect a class date after being hired?M: We try to give at least a month notice.

General:C: How many pilots does your airline expect to hire this year?M: 200+

C: Does Allegiant Air have a pilot referral program?M: We do take internal recommendations, with an official letter of recommendation from the current employee.

C: Can you describe the partnership that Allegiant has with Ameriflight?M: Yes, we are proud to have partnered with Ameriflight on this preferential hiring program. The minimums to qualify is 1000 hours in one of Ameriflight’s type rated required aircrafts and instructor/management experience.

C: What is pay and housing in training?M: From the first day of class you are paid 70 guaranteed at first year pay. Hotels, (single occupancy) are provided throughout training. Once you start sim, a rental car will be provided for you and your sim partner.

C: What are Allegiant’s typical trips like?M: Most of Allegiant trips are “day trips” or “out and backs”. Generally 2 or 4 legs starting in domicile, going to an out station where they turn and head back to domicile. It affords pilots who live in a base to basically sleep in their own beds every night.
