Defining Relative Clauses

In Unit 4 we looked at defining relative clauses with the relative pronouns who, whichor that. In this unit, we will see that when, where and whose can also be used as relative pronouns.

Examples:

• A woman whose husband has died is called a widow.

• A place where beer is produced is called a brewery.

• Can you remember a time when you were very happy?

As these are defining relative clauses, the sentences do not make sense if you omit the whole relative clause:

A woman is called a widow. X

A place is called a brewery. X

Can you remember a time? XFor Aptech Centre Use Only

Defining Relative Clauses

Like with who, which and that, the pronouns when and where can be omitted

when the noun they describe is the object of the sentence:

• The place (where/that) you buy ice-cream…

• The day (when/that ) I met you…

They can also be replaced by that.
