When on the air they appear to dislike each other, and disagree on everything from when to hunt and fish, to how to cook, and deal with their collective brood of ten children. Relax; the perceived tension is just the on-air mantra, as Brock Ray and Don Kirk are peaceful friends who have shared outdoor adventures for two decades.

Four times each week these two sports go live on the radio talking about what they know best and mutually love—the great outdoors. Between them Brock and Don have hunted and fished around the world a half dozen times during their collective

eight decades of field experience. Brock is the hunting expert, while Don lays claim to being the angling guru. This is not to say that they both are not ardent hunters and fishermen, but as the old timers put it, “good fences make good neighbors.”

Currently Brock Ray and Don Kirk broadcast live each Saturday morning on Birming-ham’s WERC AM/FM (105.5FM/960AM) between 5:00 and 7:00 am CT. Rated as Ala-bama’s top live outdoor show, “Outdoors With Brock & Don” focuses on hunting, fishing and wildlife in that state full of avid outdoorsmen.

In addition to the Saturday airing, before their microphones have a chance to cool down, Brock and Don make quick changes to the Sirius/XM where they continue at 8:00am CT with their broadcast of the twice weekly “Interstate Sportsman.” For the last four years these two outdoorsmen have tailored broadcast on hunting and fishing to North America’s professional truck driv-ers via the two widely listened to trucker channels on these satellite network. The Interstate Sportsman is popular with the millions of men and women who make a living hauling freight from coast to coast. Eighty percent of drivers hunt and fish, and

like nothing better when they are on the road than an opportunity to call in and talk to Brock and Don. The Interstate Sportsman also airs live on Thursday morning at 6:30 am CT.

Additionally, over the last four years Brock and Don have invested time and effort into the budding world of Internet Radio, partnering with the worlds’ largest such network, Voice America. Brock and Don are live onthe sports channel of Voice America network each Thursday between 8:00am and 10am CT, doing what else, but talking about hunting and fishing. The show is

quite popular and is replayed at the same time every Saturday and Sunday morning.

Blabbing into a microphone is just the most visible outdoor communications. Each of their shows have its own web site; www.isooutdoors,com, www.interstatesports-man.com, and www.brockanddonout-doors.com. These web sites in turn are the home bases for three monthly outdoor magazines published by Brock and Don ti-tled IS Outdoors, Interstate Sportsman and IS Outdoors Alabama. Sent via the Internet to hundreds of thousands of subscribers, these hunting and fishing publications fea-ture cutting edge of technology that have gained wide acceptance among today’s sportsmen. Ironically, it was a common interest in outdoor publishing that brought these well received radio hosts together.

“In 1991 I launched Buckhunter Magazine out of my home in Alabaster,” says Brock. “Shortly thereafter Don agreed to be its editor. He and I then launchedBowMas-ter Magazine. Our company was called Thicket Publishing, a group that grew quickly through aggressive marketing and solid content. Don and I launched almost a dozen magazines over the next five years before I sold my interest in the business to

pursue producing outdoor television pro-gramming.

During their tenure at Thicket Publish-ing Brock and Don ventured into live talk radio on Birmingham’s WJOX , a 50,000 watt flame throwing station thatreaches statewide and even into some neighbor-ing states. Their two-hour show, called The Buckhunters, followed Doug Laden’s Tide Talk, and a very popular morning show focused on Alabama collegiate sports. For Brock and Don the three years running Buckhunter Show was all fun. Thereafter for a number of years each called it their most fondly remembered joint venture.

The two remained in close contact after divesting Thicket Publishing, with Don doing TV fishing segments for Brock in such exotics locales as Labrador, Costa Rica and Belize, as well as making frequent appearances on Brock’s second television venture, Bassin’ Mexico. Throughout this time Brock traveled worldwide hunting, paying particular attention to hunting trophy whitetail and elk wherever these game animals were found. Five years ago while collaborating on internet web sites designed to help trucking companies find much needed drivers, Brock and Don came into contact with the trucking channels on the Sirius and XM satellite radio stations. In short order the radio show, Interstate Sportsman began, followed in quick suc-cess by a web site base for the show and a digital magazine. Even today the Interstate Sportsman remains the only effort made by anyone to communicate the great outdoors to America’s professional long distance freight haulers.

Just as Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin had an undeniable chemistry for wedding comedy to contrasting personalities, so do Brock Ray and Don Kirk. Both are talented, but in most ways in quite different direc-tions. Each of them have elephant thick

hide to the other’s occasional cutting re-marks that listeners find to be one of their most amusing attributes. However, the Ray/Kirk team is much more than laughs and giggles. Both men are Born Again Christians committed to following in the Light of Jesus. Brock frequently speaks to church groups, including at the nationally known Wild Fire Weekend ministries and others. More the politico, Don speaks to groups such as the Rainy Day Tea Party, where he puts his conviction by the Holy Spirit into what it means to him to be a responsible Christian citizen.

And of course there is the immense hunt-ing, fishing, conservation and wildlife expe-rience Brock and Don bring to their radio shows. Few people in the country have a greatly collective knowledge and experi-ence than these two well-traveled sports. According to Don, the only things that he and Brock have not caught are tigers, pan-da bear and mermaids. “We’re looking for free hunts for these animals and fish, but so far no one has called to offer such an expe-rience, “says Don with slight grin.
