Kaleidofly may be about to make it big as they’ve just got through to thesemi-finals of national talent search Live & Unsigned. We sent NicolaChappell to find out from singer Rachel Gardner what inspires the band,and whether she thinks Croydon has what it takes as a music hub

now)IS COURTNEY Pine getting too big for hisboots? After 25 years as the poster boy for UKjazz – during which he has thrown the genreinto bed with everything from drum n’ bass toreggae with varying results – his latest project isby far his most ambitions.

Inspired by four-decades of research as a“musical traveller”, Europa sees the southLondon reedsman drinking in the exotic scalesand styles of his home continent, while(apparently) trying to answer the question oneveryone’s lips – why is Europe named after aPhoenician woman?

Surrounding himself in a familiar all-star castof co-conspirators – and restricting himself tothe bass clarinet – it’s an epic trip, taking inelements of Celtic folksong and Gregorianchant, tango and tribal drumming.

Seemingly intent on moving further awayfrom the American idiom with every passingrelease, Pine’s compositions are dense andknotty affairs, soloists restricted to tightrhythmic and harmonic confines to shine.

Despite this, wacky sax-whiz ShabakaHutchings steals some great moments, guitaristCameron Pierre’s rare appearances are neverwasted, while Zoe Rahman’s precise,pinnectety piano style has found its perfecthome.

It’s a pick n’ mix, hit and miss collection, withmoments of inspiration weighed down by thelofty baggage of the project.

With changes in time signature representingdifferent books of the Bible, it’s hard at times tosilence a scoff at Pine’s misplacedover-ambition, but there’s still plenty here tointerest and entertain.

A worthy chapter in the continuing evolutionof one of modern jazz’s greatest innovators.

Probably melodic, atmospheric,h a rd - ro c k .How did you get together?

I knew Logan and Bobby before weformed the band.

They met while on an apprenticecourse. Sam and Chris were friendsof ours and they joined later on.Bobby and Sam are brothers so therecan be some artistic differencessometimes – especially as they’re theguitarists!How did you come up with thename Kaleidofly?

We were called Triad as athree-piece but when Sam and Chrisjoined we obviously couldn’t callourselves that.

One of our guitarists decided tocombine the word kaleidoscope andb u t t e r f l y.

Tthe word butterfly adds a feminine

element and is a reference to me.What has been your greatestachievement so far?

We have just got through to thesemi-finals of Live & Unsigned. Thiswill take place on Sunday in Basildon.

Each band has to perform a songthat merges one of our original trackswith an existing song. We do aversion of George Michael’s CarelessWhisper so we may use that.What do you think of the musicscene in Croydon?

There are a lot of bands trying tomake it at the moment. There are only

two venues that are okay to performin; The Ship pub and Scream Lounge.

There needs to be more bettervenues for bands.Who are your main musicalinfluences?

I like the melodic vocals and soundof the lead singer of Incubus. He putsa lot of emotion into his music and Ilike that approach. The band Tool isanother influence of ours as they usecomplex rhythms and times i g n a t u re s .What advice would you give toother bands?

You have to get as many gigs aspossible. Advertising is so important.Hand out loads of flyers, put upposters, do anything. We gave outT-shirts at one of our gigs. You reallyhave to promote yourself and getyour name out there.If the world was going to end in fiveminutes, what song would youplay?

We ’ve written a song called Insightwhich was inspired by a book calledCelestine Property. That book haskind of changed my life so I woulddefinitely play that.
