Hopefully, by now you’ll have got all the major Christmaspresent buying done and can concentrate on the type ofpresents I always enjoy looking for - the ‘fun’ extras that willgo into big kids stockings (after all, you’re never too old fora Christmas stocking…) You don’t have to spend a fortuneto bring a smile to a whisky lovers face so why not pop a littleextra in along with the Satsuma and the chocolate goldcoins? With so many whisky expressions available giving someonea tasting pack of 5cl miniatures can help them to narrowdown their choices for future purchases. It can alsodemonstrate how the age of a whisky and the cask it’smatured in can produce varying flavours and aromas, evenwithin whiskies from a single distillery. A great example ofthis is the Tomatin pack of three drams, as the whiskies notonly differ in age but also the 12 and 18 year old are finishedin Oloroso sherry casks whereas the 15 year old is solelymatured in American oak casks. They are all delightful buteach one is distinctly different. Or for a straight forwardcomparison of the influence of age, Arran Distilleries Gift Tincontains the 10, 12 and 14 year old versions of this, alwayspopular whisky but the joker in the pack is the 12 year old, which is a cask strength expression (53.9%) that gives thechance to experience the whisky exactly as it came from thecask. We also find that 20cl taster packs are getting increasinglypopular. Not only are the bottles big enough to share withfriends so you can compare notes, but they’re also a goodway of trying whiskies that are rather special, like the trio of19 year olds in the Glenfiddich Age Of Discovery Collectionthat are finished in either Madeira, Bourbon or Red Winecasks and are a celebration of three different journeys thatchanged the world. Slightly easier on the gift givers pursewould be the Glenfiddich Explorers Pack (which not onlyshowcases their 12, 15 and 18 year old but also includes anelegant tasting glass) or one of the excellent Bowmore,Springbank or Classic Malt selection packs.Or if the stocking you want to fill isn’t very big then there’s agrowing variety of single 20cl and 35cl bottles to suit alltastes - including some unusual single cask bottling's, aselection from both well known and more ‘boutique’distillers, plus a variety from not just Scotland but alsoEngland, Ireland, Wales and America. Again, these providemore than just a taste without the outlay of buying a full sizebottle.
Whichever dram you choose to raise over the festiveperiod, Ken and I wish you a very Happy Christmas and
New Year. Sláinte!

It was a cold wet Wednesday evening to be venturing out in, but what a wonderful welcome, to walk into the Woodman atFernham and have a beautifully blazing log fire to warm up to!At 7:00pm the Woodman was busy and buzzing! People at the bar grabbing an early drink after work, negotiating the price ofhorses to buy at a bargain!... That is the nice thing about being in the country, the mix of trades all under one roof, horsedealers, accountants, lawyers, our wonderful farmers, vets , builders and painters, this particular evening included a bus full
of French servicemen and women, transported in from our local Shrivenham military base, by DavidBryant, the Woodsman's new owner, courtesy of the Woodsman bus service, free pick up and dropoff for over 8 people booking!... what a pleasure!..All coming together for a drink and good food inthis local establishment!Seated quickly by the efficient staff, we were given a brand new menu to peruse! On opening theChefs Specialities quickly struck me as the one to go for..... so Pan Fried Calamari and Chorizo it was.Served in a filo pastry case, with a mixed leaf salad and homemade mustard dressing, this was light, the calamari and chorizo cooked to perfection, and presented like a work of art. If that isn't to yourfancy, there are another eight mouth watering appetisers to select from, you’re guaranteed to findone there for you! With a bottle of Merlot to enjoy, and I must say the wine selection is very reasonably priced as well
as offering a great selection. We continued onto our main course. New on the menu and a must was the Beef Flat Ribs"Jacob's Ladder". This was a beautifully presented enormous rack of beef, mouth watering, served with large deep fried
gourmet chips, onion rings and fresh peas, topped with garlic butter. Divine for all us meat lovers, crave no more for a goodmeat meal, you will be amply satisfied! The menu has a very good selection, another new dish is the Moroccan Lamb Tagine which is slowcooked lamb, infused with deep spices and fruits, served in a traditional tagine and accompaniedwith fragrant rice. The ladies at the next table had this and it smelt and looked delicious. For our desert ( yes I could fit it in!) Chocolate Coronet Pavlova. A coronet of dark chocolate filledwith crunchy meringue and a dark chocolate ice cream, oozing with white chocolate sauce finishedwith a dusting of cocoa powder. My mouth is watering just writing about it now. The plate wasembarrassingly clean and I finished my meal with a very large smile! The Woodman was recently taken over by David Bryant, who is doing a splendid job, he hasintroduced a new menu and has maintained the warmth and welcome of a very well establishedpub!

| The Advertiser | page 7 |A Plethora of Ramblings!
Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595
Hello again and welcomeTo the last of my ramblings for 2014. (Thank goodness, some of you say – I understand perfectly!!)So, December has quietly crept up on us, after a summer and autumn of extremes and new records. It’s been a busy year with its own issues that have come to a head, like the Ebola virus epidemic, and the year when HerMajesty’s forces have withdrawn from Afghanistan.Regarding the former, in the USA, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is developing an online resource tohelp veterinary surgeons advise their clients about Ebola virus and any implications it might have for companion animals. TheWorld Small Animal Veterinary Association calls for testing and quarantine rather than euthanasia for pets belonging topositive Ebola-infected owners. The AVMA “open” resource link for everyone interested is: www.avma.org/KB/Resources/Reference/Pages/Ebola-virus.aspxMay also I touch on the latter, especially as I’m writing with a background of the Tower of London and the sea of redcascading over a rampart and out of a window, to spread right round the Tower moat. Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red.All made by the 888,246 red ceramic poppies that will help to raise much needed funds for the six service charities associatedwith servicemen and women, many of whose worries and injuries may take a life-time of care and support. I wrote a littleabout that in my last article but at close family-times such as Christmas and birthdays, when losses are felt more deeply, I writeagain as a tribute to every serviceman and woman this Christmas time.Listening to a BBC World Service programme this morning, discussing the evolution of emergency trauma care, being givento injured service personnel, often very critically injured, their experience and sheer professionalism and initiative, create newwork patterns and techniques “out in the field” that have saved more lives than ever before. These techniques and ways of managing patients have already come back into the UK and will be widely spread, to enhancemedical and surgical practices all over the country. A legacy that is very special.
Christmas time from a veterinary viewpoint, other than duty rota's and out of hours cover, brings its ownmedical and surgical challenges. We have already had eaten socks, balls of orange-flavoured chocolate, fruitcake, a whole bunch of grapes and chocolate-coated cocoa-flavoured biscuits. I can go on but will steer thisdiscussion on to another worrying trend – where pets are at risk from human medicines. A recent surveyof 100 veterinary surgeons by a well-known insurer Direct Line Pet Insurance, has found that the mostcommon types of drugs ingested were paracetamol, ibuprofen, medicines specific for particular medicalconditions, such as heart conditions and diabetes, contraceptive pills, sleeping tablets andantidepressants. At 28% of vets reporting deliberate dosing by owners, in the mistaken belief thatit would help their pets, this left 72% or 243 cases of accidental poisoning.
The warning “keep medicines out of the reach of children AND pets” is very appropriate. So too the Christmastree chocolates and the presents underneath, the fruit bowls, meat bones and all those yummy fruitcakes! The insurer understandably stresses that owners should assume that ALL human medications arepoisonous to pets and that owners should always seek advi ce for conditions fromtheir veterinary practice. Appointments are always possible, shouldmore than qualified, professional advice be needed. Please have a very safe and enjoyable Christmas; for those readers whom we have the pleasure of yourcustom, a sincere thank you from all of us here. For those professionals giving complementary services, such as hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, homeopathy and chiropractic, thank you for your time and skill.Thank you for your company.MERRY CHRISTMAS! With a Happy, safe and healthy New Year to follow.

It's such a lovely time of year! The leaves are turning golden, the sun is low in the sky and the harvest has happened!Preserving is something that not many people seem to donowadays. There are plenty of different ways of preserving, from freezing, to drying to making jam. In past times, preserving was essential as there were no supermarketsflying produce from all corners of the world to service ourshopping trolley. So meats, vegetables, fruits and milkwere all preserved somehow. For instance, making cheeseor yogurt are ways of preserving milk.Christmas is fast approaching and actually, a little jar ofsomething is a perfect present. There are countless recipesfor chutney, jam and jellies and they are really pretty easy. Most chutneys start off the same way by cooking onion invinegar with some spices. Jams are the same weight offruit to sugar. So it's very easy to personalise a recipe.Trees have been laden with pears this year, unlike appleswhich have been less so. I thought we'd make something alittle bit different that families will love, and for the festiveseason, go rather well with cheese or meat.Pickled Pears are on the menu today.
1 litre white wine vinegar1 pinch saffron10-12 peppercorns3 sticks cinnamon300g soft brown sugar12 pears
In a large pan, warm the vinegar, saffron, peppercorns andcinnamon.Add the sugar and let it dissolve, simmer for a few minutes.Peel the pears, then consider your jar size, leave the pearswhole if you think they'll fit the jar or quarter them andcore.Add the pears to the vinegar and cook for a few minutes.Warm the jars in the oven, at about 100°C for 5 minutes.Pack the pears in to the jars and pour over the vinegar tototally cover.Screw on the lids well and tightly and leave for a month tomature.Serve with cold meats and cheeses.

A Little Bottle of Christmas!
This year’s Christmas will be spent with Pedro Ximénez – notthe person, the Spanish white grape variety!Pedro Ximénez is made as a sweet, rich, dark dessertsherry by drying the grapes under the hot Spanish sunthat in turn concentrates the sweetness. Many maycringe at the word ‘sherry’, however this category ofwine has moved swiftly into the twenty first century, presenting us with some of the most versatile winesbursting with a dynamic range of flavour profiles –and you don’t even have to get a blue rinse to enjoythem! The soil where the Pedro Ximénez grapes are grownin the Jerez region (southern Spain) is high in silicaand calcic carbonate. It is deep and has good oxygencontent, and produces grapes with high sugar levels. When the Pedro Ximénez grapes are harvested, theyare left out in the sun to dry for at least two weeks. This concentrates the sugars through evaporation, turning them to raisins. A very sweet must is thenobtained through pressing, which is fermented andthen fortified to around 17%, using grape spirit of 96%. Thewine is then aged in a Solera system made up of oak casks. The Solera (meaning ‘on the ground’ in Spanish) is an ageingprocess whereby barrels are stacked on top of one anotherand younger ‘sherry’ is added to aged sherry via a method offractional blending. The top barrel is filled for each ageinginterval allowing the oldest container to be partly tapped of
its contents (the Solera level)producing a final product that is amixture of wine aged 100%oxidatively (having exposure tothe air). The last barrel that hasbeen partly emptied is thentopped up with the second oldestsherry and left to mature. Thisprocess continues along the line,
from one barrel to the next as no barrel is ever drained. Wineproduced from a solera does not have a vintage date as it isa blend of vintages from many years. As the Festive Holiday Season approaches and the dailyroutine winds down, the wait for Santa requires a ‘sippingtipple’ with substance…..

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club
FBBC NovemberBrand value, corporate message and visual shortcuts werethe buzzwords at the November meeting of the FaringdonBusiness Breakfast Club. Local PR consultant CarolineScotter-Mainprize of CSM Communications opened our eyesto the dark arts of managing and promoting your brand. Shealso shattered a few common misconceptions such as thefact that many of the most recognisable brands in the worldhave never actually paid a penny on advertising. It was athoroughly interesting insight from an expert in their fieldand got everyone thinking about their own brand identity.
Our December meeting on 1st will have a slightly differentformat, but is still at the same venue – The Sudbury HouseHotel in London Street. Regular member, Jonathan Russell, will be setting us a Christmas themed quiz as well as theusual networking.FBBC is open to all and costs just £10 per meeting. If you areinterested in coming, please visit the club’s websitehttp://www.fbbc-networking.co.uk or reserve your place bycalling 0845 003 1340.

The Fastest Way to Lose Fat.
Fat loss does not have to be difficult. It does however involve making new choices over the foodyou eat and changes to how you spend some of your sparetime. As it requires you to change some of the habits thatyou may have had for a while, it is best done as part of acommunity of people that will be able and willing to supportyou with your fat loss goals. Until you have decided that youare prepared to make those changes and commit to themwith no excuses you are going to find it difficult to lose fatand maintain fat loss in the long term.THERE ARE NO SHORT CUTS TO LONG TERM FAT LOSS.One reason people do not get results is that they resistchange and focus on what they have to GIVE UP rather thanwhat they have to GAIN (or lose in the case of weight loss)There has to be commitment. Most people fail with fat lossdue to not committing themselves fully. So what changes will you need to make?
EAT REAL FOOD – The quality of the food you eat isextremely important. Think of it as fuel. It has to be the bestquality fuel you can afford to give your body the nutrients itneeds.
EAT PROTEIN - Base all your meals around lean proteinand non starchy vegetables that are high in natural fibre andnutrients.
DRINK WATER - You will need plenty of it to flush all ofthe toxins from the excess fat you are getting ready to lose.
FIX YOUR DIGESTION – For the best fat loss results fixyour gut health. By doing this you will get more out of yourfood which will alleviate some of your cravings for sweetthings.
EXERCISE SMART - Every workout you do in the gymshould train the full body and all three planes of motion.High intensity is the key; you must work as hard as you caneach time you train. It is best to get advice with yourexercise plan so that you can train safely and effectively andensure you get the results you want in the time you haveavailable.
BE CONSISTENT – Do not expect miracles over night. Ifit has taken you many months or even years to becomeoverweight and out of shape, with a life time of bad habitsand fad diets, you’re not going to change shape over night.
MOVE YOUR BODY – This doesn’t have to be just whenyou are training in the gym. If you are a novice when itcomes to exercise just concentrate on moving more.
REDUCE STRESS – This might be trickier for somepeople depending on what the stressor is in their life. Theconnection between stress and obesity cannot beoverlooked - the stress chemical cortisol signals a metabolicshutdown that makes losing fat almost impossible.
FOLLOW A PLAN - Set a path for yourself and be patient.Keep to one thing and avoid being distracted by fads thatoffer quick results - you will only end up having to start allover again at some time in the future.
EAT CLEAN - EAT LEAN – EAT GREEN – TRAIN HARDLOSE FAT

Run in Red – A FarRunner’s First, by Matt BraggThere is not much to me in reality, running and the Military ispretty much my daily bread. Someone in the club once said to methat “your life is a training program”, which is understandablewhy those two worlds often meet.As I looked at my calendar for 9th November it left me feeling alittle deflated, as I thought I was going to have to miss the FarRunners Sunday run meet at 9:30am due to Church and the townRemembrance Parade. It got me thinking that actually peopleshould not have to make that decision and I hoped that if thatdecision had to be made they would always choose the latter. As I stood in the Market Square in the bursting sunshine and heardthe words “When you go home, tell them of us and say: for yourtomorrow we gave our today”, I thought back to the times ondeployments when running would often be a release from reality,a reality that faces many of our Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen. With the Far Runners being such a friendly and approachablebunch, I thought of a way of combining the act of Remembranceand the Sunday run, so for those like me who wanted to conductthe 2 minute silence we had enough time to remove medals anddon running trainers and conduct our customary Sunday runningritual. So ‘Run in Red’ was born. A simple concept of a 1 mile, 2 mileand a 4 mile run/walk for anyone that wanted to attend. It waspromoted that wearing something red would also be our FarRunners act of Remembrance as the run route visited the townWar Memorial at least 3 times (for all distances), and how fittingwith this being the 100 year anniversary of the start of the firstWorld War.I hope that "Run in Red" will stay with the Far Runners, even whenmy duties take me to pastures new. So if you remember seeingThe Far Runners in Faringdon town, wearing red, you now knowwhat it was all about. The Far Runners coined the concept “Run in Red”, we ran it herefirst!
If you are interested in joining the FarRunners, we would love to seeyou. We are a sociable bunch and cater for ALL ages and abilities. We meet at the Old Town Hall at 6:30pm on a Tuesday and 7pm on aThursday. We also meet at the Leisure Centre at 9:30am on Sundays. Our early morning group meets on a Thursday at 6am (again at theOld Town Hall).
