GATHERING Prelude

Welcome & Call to Worship

One: We come here to draw water— All: Thirsty for new life.

One: We come here to draw water— All: Bringing our past and our present, our messy truths,

and our deepest scars.

One: We come here to draw water— All: Carrying shame, and in need of grace.

One: Fortunately for us, God always meets us at the well. So breathe deeply and drink up. All: God is here. The water is clean. Let us worship God. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

One: Gracious God, All: Like the woman at the well, we so often are unraveled by

shame. We carry shame for broken relationships. We carry shame for being unable to balance work and parenting, tithing and bills, productivity and Sabbath. We get stuck in a comparison game and in critical self-monologues, consumed with the nagging feeling that we should be able to do more. Forgive us for forgetting that we are made in your image. Forgive us for forgetting that you see us and love us as we are. Unravel the shame that unravels us. Gratefully we pray, Amen.

Assurance of Forgiveness

As beach-goers on a sweltering, summer day. O God, we drink at your fountain, as a parched dog laps at the fresh, running water of a creek. O God, we await your refreshment, as a tired worker watches for the change of shift. Quench our thirst, satisfy our longings. May we be refreshed and restored in you; and teach us where to find the bucket and how to carry it, so that we might draw that water for those who most need it. Amen

Scripture Lesson John 4:1-29 (Samaritan Woman at the Well)

One: The Holy Gospel according to John, chapter 4 All: Glory to you, O Lord. 1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John” 2 —although it was not Jesus himself but his disciples who baptized— 3 he left Judea and started back to Galilee. 4 But he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. 7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, 4

Page 6: ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com A… · 1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John” 2

‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you[c] say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.” 27 Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?” 28 Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?”

Apostles’ Creed

All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 6

Page 8: ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com A… · 1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John” 2

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Community

Let us pray to our God saying Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Holy God, you knew us before we took our first breath. You uttered your living Word and brought forth light, love, and life. You gathered us from the dust of the earth and called us your people. You sent us into the world to proclaim your mighty and wondrous deeds. You are with us even now as we continue our call. Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Mighty God, you have done great things; who is like you? You alone are our rock of refuge. You alone are our strong fortress. You alone are our hope and in you alone is our trust. Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Gracious God, do not be far from us! Strengthen us that we might be givers of your grace and may your steadfast love be known to all of your children. Send your Holy Spirit to empower our hands to

clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and love all as you have first loved us. Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Loving God, hear today the prayers that we lift up to you. Give us hearts of courage and songs of your grace to tell others of your righteous acts and deeds of salvation. Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Abundant God, be with those of us that yearn for your healing. Today, we ask your blessing upon all whose names we bring before you with our lips or within our hearts. … Lord, in your righteousness, deliver us and set us free.

Faithful God, your power and your righteousness reach the heavens. Hear us, your servants, as we follow you to the day when faith, hope, and love will be upon the lips of all of us, your children. These things we pray in the name of your Son. Amen.

MEAl Proclamation of Christ's Peace

One: The peace of Christ be with you always! All: And also with you.

Offertory Prayer

One: Let us pray... All: Almighty God, who made us who we are, we offer all of our-

selves to You. Take our talents, our energy and our joy, and use us to share your love. Take our mistakes, our regrets and our pain, and use us to bring Your healing. Magnify the gifts we will offer before You today, to spread your peace in the world. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 8

Page 10: ADVENT LUTHERAN CHURCH - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com A… · 1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John” 2

It is indeed right to give you our thanks and praise, O God, for, in an everlasting covenant, you have promised to be our God through all generations. You called into existence things that did not exist: the universe and all that inhabits it. From Abraham and Sarah you brought forth nations, calling them to walk before you in the righteousness that comes from faith.

In your Son, Jesus, you showed your compassion for the afflicted and taught us that real life is found by those who lose their life for your sake and for your gospel. He was rejected by the religious leaders, and killed, but three days later, you raised him from the dead as Lord. Now you justify all who put their faith in you, through him, counting it to us as righteousness, and promising us the full riches of your grace when Christ comes in glory.

Therefore we join our praises with countless men and women before us, disciples and apostles, saints and martyrs, acclaiming your power in goodness and your might in compassion, as we proclaim:

Sanctus “Holy” (Haugen, Now the Feast and Celebration)

Eucharistic Prayer

One: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Meal Is Shared

One: For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
