In this class the audience will learn how to create elegant and quick VFX with the new interoperability “Send to” from 3dsmax to Softimage to 3dsmax again.

1.1 ) Learn the ” SEND TO “ workflow from 3dsmax to Softimage
Open 3dsmax 2012 (you must have the 3dsmax Entertainment suite premium
a) Open the file ‘ford car start ’
b) Click on Perspective view to highlight

c) Press play at the bottom right corner (the car is moving from frame 140 to 455) press the
rewind button to return to frame 0
d) Press C ( camera view) you can see the car with two planes (top and bottom)

e) Press CTRL +A to select all the geometry ( car & two planes)
f) Click on 3dsmax icon at the top left corner, at the bottom of the menu click on ‘SEND TO
“ a fly out menu will show with Softimage , Mudbox , Motion Builder icons, click on the
‘SEND TO’ Softimage icon.
g) Select ‘send as a new scene’.

h) Softimage start’s to load ( you need to have Softimage 2012 in the same machine)
click ok on the Softimage message, you are now connected to 3dsmax
g) Click on the viewport in Softimage (wireframe button) select Shaded

h) Now you can see the same 3dsmax geometry inside Softimage , click on the plane 001

a) With the plane 001 selected , click on the left side menu ( Particles / Create) select

b) After clicking create Lagoa volume emission, you have to select the collider which is the
car, a PICK green arrow will appear, select the car.
c) The Lagoa setting shows up on the right corner, change the resolution per unit to 4
press play, the lagoa particles will drop from the plane and will collide with the car
around frame 150

d) Change the Resolution to 1.5, rewind and press play again, you will see more particles
and the calculation time will increase because the number of particles. We want to use
more particles to achieve better results, MORE PARTICLES = BETTER RESULTS
e) Click on the bottom right corner UPDATE, this action will start to cache the particles and
send to 3dsmax.
f) Switch to 3dsmax and press play, you will see the Pflow emitter with the particles acting
like the Softimage particles.

g) If you press 6 on the keyboard, you can see the Pflow schematic with the new Point
cloud cache from Softimage
1.3 Learn how to set up realistic lighting and materials
2 Click on systems- daylight, click on the viewport (click and drag) to create the compass,
click yes on the dialogs about MR sun and Sky and release the mouse when you have the
daylight closer to the elevation as the image above.

b) Click the F9 to make a render test, the render frame and start to render the scene, It takes
around 1 min to render.
c) Change the camera position, find a nice shot for your car like the image below.

d) Open the material editor (M) select the first one called ”ford focus body”, change the colors as
you want , you are using the Autodesk material library, you can import the models from Inventor,
Revit, Autocad with the Autodesk materials already applied.

1.4 Learn how to use Iray in 3dsmax to produce great looking renders
a) Open the render setting dialog (press F10) , Iray is the render engine , the only thing you
need to set up it’s the time.
Iray already configure the lighting settings and the final gather etc, like mental ray. The
good thing about iray its about NO CONFIGURATION REQUIRED, just need to put the
time that you want to render, Iray will use you video card gpu ( if you have one) or it will
use the CPU’s to deliver the best image possible in terms on the time setup
b) Iray can use the mental ray library, it’s very simple to use, you can get very fast results
with a few clicks.
