What is a piece?
A piece is a logical segment of knitting. Using knitCompanion, you can break a PDF pattern
into its component parts for knitting. These component parts are known as pieces.
Sock Example: If knitting a sock you may have five pieces - the Toe, Foot, Gusset, Heel, and
Leg.
Sweater Example: If knitting a sweater you may have four pieces - the Back, Right Front, Left
Front, and Sleeve.
Tips and Tricks
A project can have as many pieces as needed.
All the pieces will show up in the Piece Bar.
The Piece Bar is scrollable from side-to-side.
The selected piece is centered on the Piece Bar. So if you scroll to the right and tap a
piece, it will appear as the center piece in your Piece Bar. However, centering cannot
occur on the first few or last few pieces.
You can rearrange pieces on the Setup Project page by selecting the grabber icon
and moving the piece to the correct location.
A piece can be either text or chart.
o Text Piece: A text piece is generally used for written instructions but does not
have to be all text. A text piece can contain images, diagrams, or pictures. For
example, the schematic of your pattern. Basically a text piece is anything other
than a chart.
o Chart Piece: A chart piece is reserved for charts within the pattern. Charts have
special qualities such as row and stitch counts.
Pieces can be edited, copied, or deleted after they are created.
Plan Your Pieces
We suggest you review the PDF to determine the following in regard to the pieces of the
project. Tap the PDF swoosh icon on the Setup Project page or the PDF button on the Main
Knitting page to display the pattern in its PDF form directly inside knitCompanion.
What pieces do you need to create?
What do you want to name each piece?
Which page of the PDF is each piece located?
Is the piece a chart or text?

What is a Key?
A key is typically used to describe the abbreviations used in a pattern or the legend used for
charts. However, you can set up keys to be anything you want.
Example: You may want to create two separate keys for a chart. One key for stitch
abbreviations and a second key for special instructions needed to execute complex stitches.
As you tap the key icon and cycle through each key, the name you assigned the key appears
directly below the key icon.
Tips and Tricks
A project can have as many keys as needed.
Keys show up in the Multi-Function pane.
If you have more than one key setup for a project, you:
o can designate which key defaults in the Multi-Function pane as you knit.
o can tap the Key icon on the main knitting page to cycle through the keys. Each
tap cycles to the next key in the list.
o control the order in which the keys appear with each tap.
o can rearrange keys on the Setup Project page by selecting the grabber icon
and moving the key to the correct location.
Keys can be edited, copied, or deleted after they are created.

Creating Templates
Templates can be setup once and then added to your pieces over and over again to
complete the piece.
What is a Template?
A template is a reusable block or motif within your project. They can be used to setup charts
where a motif should be repeated more than once. Templates enable you to "crop once" and
reuse multiple times in one or more pieces.
Example: A pattern may have one center motif and another motif that should be knit on both
the left and right side of that center motif. Using templates you can create the side motif once
and then create the center motif. Then you can combine the two into a single piece, copying
the template to the left side and then the right side of the center motif.
Lace Example: Lace charts sometimes have a center motif that requires a border to march up
both sides of the center.
Aran Knitting Example: An aran knitting pattern may have different cable pattern columns that
have various repeat amounts (one may be 12, another 6, and another 3). You can make
templates of the 6 and 3 repeats and then build up a complete motif that is 12 rows high for
ALL the repeats.

Caution: Changes to a template will only appear the next time the template is
used. The changes will not appear in the pieces/places where it is currently
used.
Templates can be edited, copied, or deleted after they are created.
Plan Your Templates
We suggest you review the PDF to determine the following in regard to the templates of the

Does the template need to be added to the piece multiple times?

Best Practice: If you like to color code certain types of stitches, save time by
adding a colored single stitch marker on your template. Each time you use this
template that stitch will be marked with the selected color.
Caution: Stitch Markers and Life Lines display all the way across a row. So
when you add the template to the piece the Life Line will appear all the way
across the piece or the Stitch Marker is going to go all the way up the piece
and not be contained just within the template. The same applies to row text,
any row text you enter for the template will apply to the entire row piece once
you assemble the pieces and templates together.
