Battery Power: A main enabler
Advanced rechargeable batteries are key to achieving the goals for a climate-neutral society and play a pivotal role in an increasingly electrified world:
• low-emission mobility • decarbonized energy generation • power a sheer endless number of everyday applications, such as
smartphones, tablets, power tools and robots

Battery Power: A main enabler
• Supported by legislative ambitions to fight climate change and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, battery-powered cars are expected to increase from today 1% of all vehicles globally to more than 20% by 2030.
• The market for stationary energy storage systems is expected to increase too, from 36 GWh in 2015 to 65 GWh in 2025.

The European Battery Market
While Europe is the second largest market for e-vehicles and the third largest in stationary energy storage, Europe only accounts for about 3% of the global cell and battery manufacturing capacity today.
To boost European battery cell manufacturing, the EU launched the European Battery Alliance in October 2017.
It is estimated that about 10 to 20 large-scale battery cell productionfacilities are required to meet the future European battery demand.

Waste
Batteries have been subject to end-of-life requirements since 2006:
• Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC
• Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive 2012/19/EU
• Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC
• End-of-life Vehicles Directive 2000/53/EC
17
12,464,000 From 2009 to 2017, more than twelve million batteries (excl. portable batteries) had been collected for recycling in the European Union (Eurostat).
The European battery industry has managed to develop a strong presence in the waste treatment sector.
