Citrus Belt Duo Make The Cut

At USBC Senior Masters Tourey

by Frank WeilerTUCSON, AZ—DeWayne

West of Temecula and Ray Cobb of Highland finished 20th and 41st after three rounds of qualify-ing, over a three day period, at the USBC Senior Masters Tourna-ment in Tucson.

West averaged 201 and Cobb 195, for fifteen games, to finish in the top sixty-four and advance to match play. Only twenty-two of the two hundred sixty entrants averaged 200 or better on the difficult lane conditions. Some of the nationally prominent se-nior PBA pros who finished qualifying below our Citrus Belt standouts included Dale Eagle, Steve Fehr, Pete McCordic, Teata Semiz, Ernie Schlegel and Dave Soutar.

Match play commenced on the fourth day of competition and found our local keglers facing stiff competition. Cobb had to face longtime PBA stars Bob Handley and Terry Leong. West had to go up against PBA champion Hugh Miller and Tom Carter. After defeating Carter, West bowled Don Blatchford.

By the end of the first day of match play both Cobb and West were eliminated. Nonethe-less, both were satisfied with their bowling, knowing they had cashed and out bowled many all-time PBA greats.

Both Cobb and West are now heading for Las Vegas to compete in the PBA Senior US Open at the Suncoast Resort and Casino. Other local bowlers entered in the Senior PBA US Open include San Bernardino’s own Tony De-LaTore and Frank Weiler.

Thanks Bowling News for supporting our Citrus Belt bowl-ers.

Fisser Wins ABTA Title at the Bowl-O-Drome (L-R) Som Seng 3rd w/ Daughter’s Kunika, and Kristina, Ursula Sanchez (Desk Lady extrordinaire), Mark Fisser - Champion $1,500 and La Sandra Chaney (runner-up) $500

Paulsen, & Hower share $3,500 Match Game (L-R) Tiffany Morita, congratulates her boyfriend Jeremy Paulsen on hitting the Match Game 181 at Bowl-O-Drome sharing the $3,500 pot with Steven Hower (not Pictured) at right is ABTA Director Mafife Catalasan who offers her congrats. Paulsen also bowled 181 in the Semis but did not re-enter the pot or would have 2/3 of the Cash instead of 1/2.

TORRANCE—Mark Fisser stepped up and won his second ABTA title at Super Bowl-O-Drome. He did it the hard way winning five straight matches, and finally downed the top seed Pretty La Sandra Chaney in a close title match to take a nice $1,500 home to Laguna Hills.

The Bowl-O-Drome event had a decent 159 entrants on a great, fair tournament shot. We had nice cut scores of Men +64 and the ladies at a nice +23 to to make it to the semis of 45 Bowlers. Also added were Super Seniors Rick Hunter, Ken Seiple Sr., and Bobbie Mc Collum.

Leading the Semis was one of our finest supporters La Sandra Chaney at a +120. She would sit out and bowl for the title. In second was Som Seng at +108. He would enter in round twoof the single elims (top 16.) It took a +40 (men) and (Ladies) 4 to make the sweet 16 single elim rolloffs.

The Bowlers took to the lanes., In the first round eliminated, were Ping Romero, Glen Mabilangan, Koo Hwang, Lenny Riley, David Mathisen, Jennifer Maher, and Tres Catalasan. They got checks of $100 in 10-16th place.

In round two being eliminated were Debra Sanders, Brandon Mc Pherson, Vic Fabian and Rhuel Sanchez.. They got Checks of $110 in 6-9th place.

Round three had Som Seng out-strike Jeremy Paulsen 238-225, and Fisser did the same to a tough Linda Armstrong 249-206, So Linda and Jeremy were 4th and 5th and $120 each with Mark, and Som to meet for the right to bowl for the title against Ms Chaney.

Qualify 12:30-2:00 & 3:30 - Semi-Finals 5:00 PM LAS VEGAS Rooms Due This Saturday at CAL

In this match Fisser again was firingXX’s and won out 256-195. The likable Som Seng who had a few taps, was 3rd, with Mark on to the title game..

The title game was set and the horses were paid! Mark returned $77 for everyone who had him in the $5 horse bets.

The title game was on. La San-dra split, and opened in frame 1. Mark then struck and kept right on going with the front 5, but La San-dra stayed right there with a double in the 3-4. She put pressure again with a double in the 6-7 frames, and had the lead but she whiffed a 7 pin in the 8th and led by four pins. Fisser made his run to the title with strikes in the 8-9-10 and won a good one 242/252-194/239. His ABTA Title could not come to a more respectful young man who is a great bowler and a fine family man. Parents Millie, and Garrett (ABTA member) will be proud! Great Bowling by a nice guy. Title #3 is in his future. Great bowling by La Sandra who bowled so well at Bowl-O-Drome. She is very com-petitive and will win in the future as is Som Seng in 3rd!

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Koo Hwang +151 for the men and Tiffany Morita led the ladies at +90. They will get paid entries.

Bert Tandoc and Don Quitan-gon led the doubles at 1462 $140.Tandoc and Ronnie “Ace” Cordero, 2nd 1438 and $120.We paid12 places and $900 in the doubles.

Roger Romero and Nancy Brown were unable to eliminate in the 3-6-9 , so they shared the $50 Consolation. We will go for $1,200 this week at CAL Bowl. They got a $50 consolation for beer money:-).

The Match Game was drawn by La Sandra Chaney and two of our finest, Steven Hower and Jeremy Pausen were two winers whose 186 games shared the $3,500 pot ($1,750 each). The Match Game again will be $3,500 at CAL with the balance going to a reserve pot! Unbelievably Paulsen had another 181 in the Semis but did not re-enter the pot or he would have gotten 2/3 of the $3,500.

Match Series worth $494, was drawn by Koo Hwang, and no one matched the 640, so we estimate the Series to be $900 at CAL for only a $2.00 fee to enter.

Champion Mark Fisser hails from Laguna Hills, and used a Storm drilled by Dick Braasch. He is married to Natalie, with sons Brandon, Ryan, and Dylan. He thanks Natalie and family for sup-port and Bob and the ABTA staff for a job well done.

La Sandra Chaney is an ABTA regular supporter and very competi-tive. She used a Blast Zone drilled by Frank Bellinder at Saddleback Lanes. She is married to Phillip an ABTA member. She tthanks family esp Nick Munoz Jr., Nick Sr. and Chris Munoz for support.

Som Seng also a regular sup-porter of the ABTA used “the Angle”. Driller unknown? He is married to Kunthea and has 3 beau-tiful daughters Kunika,Kristina, Kala and a son Som Jr. He thanks His CAL Bowl friends, and mentor Bobby Knippple, Boylee Inocente and Jr. Guimary for support.

It was great returning to Bowl -O-Drome. We will return there on our next schedule. Kudos to GM Ronnie, Manager, and ABTA member Todd Ball who is Asst GM

there. Great job by the desk crew esp Ursula and Ron again for the fine lane condition.

for the second three games. “Going into the finals from

the winners bracket gave me that little extra security that I could still lose the first match and have another chance,” Parks said. “I was struggling on the first pair but I was still pretty comfortable. The fact that I had a better shot on the other pair made me feel pretty confident.”

In a previous winners brack-et match on Friday, Parks de-feated Baker 664-568 sending the three-time Senior Tour Player of the Year to the losers bracket.

“Even though I beat him that match I told him I hoped to see him in the finals and that’s exactly what happened,” Parks added.

Baker admitted to being a little overwhelmed in trying to figure out the conditions on both pairs during the champion-ship match.

“I was thinking and adjust-ing so much I think I confused myself,” Baker said jokingly. “I have to give Kenny a lot of credit, the way he bowled and kept it together after losing the first match was pretty awe-some.” Baker earned $8,000 for his second place finish.

Next stop on the PBA Senior Tour is another major, the PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by the Suncoast June 15-20.

CANOGA PARK BOWL • 20122 Vanowen St., Winnetka, CA 91306 • 818-340-5190

STUDIO CITY — We would like to thank all of our league bowlers who made it to this year’s Pinz 2nd Annual League Appreciation Day and we are happy to report it was a raging success! Pizza, cake and bowling seems like the least we could have done to show our appreciation to our bowlers and we all know without you we would be, well, just another house! You guys rule!!

PINZ ADULTS With the first official day of summer about to hit us on June 21st, both Nice and Sweet wonder where has all the t ime gone. I t just seems l ike yesterday that Winter Leagues began, the memories are so fresh of when Dave Yamamoto bowled a 298 or when two of our very own Junior Bowlers threw a perfect game! Now that the days are heating and all the summer leagues have started, the global warming may be attributed to the hot sizzling scores coming from our adult leagues: Tavern Guild: Dave Dittlinger 237/670, Mark Peavey 268/657, Doc McCoy 244/613, Ed Dusseau 608, Tom Whitaker 233/606, Eric Michaels 234. Twilighters: Michael Lee 279/774, Eddie Barnes 237/634, George Cruz 634, Laurie Fazo 248/623, Kevin King 235/602, Robert Lerman 235. Kings and Queens: Tony Ferrari 575, Arlan Kahn 223, Bryan Berman 220, Luke Avery 215, Jeff Diner 212, Sue Guldin 211.

PINZ JUNIORS Now kids, before you begin to celebrate the first day of summer, there is another day we can’t overlook: Eat Your Vegetables Day! I would take this time to preach the value of eating all your peas and Brussels sprouts but looking at your scores week in and week out, it seems you have eaten all our vegetables and have grown into amazing bowlers as these scores show: Senior Scratch: Adam Lander 256/764, Nathan Honda 226/753, Ethan Bensinger 209/659, Nikolai Berk 215/659, Scott Englehart 652, Teddy Galvan 205. Senior Galaxies: Rachel Acacio 186/442, Stirling McCulloch 129/336, Daniel Cohen 120/332, Noah Lander 113/313, Jonathan Berk 102/281. Junior Stars: Nicole Martinez 110/319, Jared Lim 139/283, Nicholas Martinez 97/276. Pee Wee Bumpers: Jeffery Lim 82/159.

PINZ SENIORS/LADIES Hold the presses, when you hear the phrase, ‘Oh Fudge This Week’. It’s not because one of our amazing seniors missed a seven-ten split but because they are celebrating National Fudge Day! Come to think of it, if we were to compare our seniors to fudge, I would say they are smooth, rich in character and very sweet, and not a nut among them! So as you munch on a bit of fudge, you might want to wash it down with these scores: Happy Timers: Gary Olsen 554,Ken Burkenheim 217/552, Ruth Swick 204/525, Joyce Rabinowitz 409, Bob Garrick 206, Yolanda Dagotta 148. Coffee & Donuts: Charlene Gaffney 186/515. Senior Social: Gary Olsen 232/579, Bob Garrick 188/500, Charlene Gaffney 188/492, Joel Margolis 159/452, Christine Stark 159/441, Art Michener 173. Bowler of the Week: This

week we are celebrating Gary Olson, yes the same Gary. If course he bowled great; he always does. This week he fin-ished us all off with a 232 game. He is our first triple platinum member (3 time winner). Good job on edging out Charlene. Sweetness Quote of the Week: “Appreciation is a won-derful thing; It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” - Voltaire - French philosopher.

USBC OPEN/WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS TO CALL DISNEY WORLD PROPERTY HOME

2011 Open Championships begins 13-event run through 2029GREENDALE, Wis. - The United States Bowling Congress announced

today it will hold 13 events - seven Open Championships and six Women’s Championships - from 2011 through 2029 in a privately-funded bowling center on land being made available at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in Osceola County, Fla.

The agreement begins with the 2011 Open Championships. The Open will be held every three years after that through 2029. The first Women’s Championships will be in 2013 and held every three years through 2028.

“USBC is proud to bring two of the world’s largest participatory sport-ing events to Osceola County,” said USBC Vice President of Tournaments and Events Jack Mordini. “USBC’s partnership with Osceola County, Disney Sports Enterprises, the Central Florida Sports Commission and the developer will bring hundreds of thousands of participants and visitors to Central Florida who will enjoy the many amenities and attractions the area has to offer. This is one of the greatest announcements in the bowling industry since the invention of the automatic pinsetter.”

Each tournament will run for approximately 20 weeks and is expected to draw tens of thousands of bowlers and spectators. The USBC Open Championship is projected to generate approximately 59,000 room nights per tournament and the Women’s Championship is projected to generate approximately 40,000 room nights per tournament for Osceola County. Combined, the tournaments are expected to generate nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars in economic impact for the community over that time period.

“Osceola County is thrilled that this endeavor, nicknamed Project Rolling Rock by the Economic Development Department, has come to fruition. We welcome USBC to our community,” said Commissioner Ken Shipley.

The Central Florida Sports Commission worked with the USBC and related parties to develop this opportunity for Osceola County.

“The acquisition of this business is a watershed event for Osceola County. The USBC Championships will be a powerful annuity program for the County for the next 20 years,” said John Saboor, president of the Central Florida Sports Commission.

Osceola County was one of five communities under consideration for the 2011 USBC Open Championships. The others were Wichita, Kan.; Tulsa, Okla.; Corpus Christi, Texas; and Reno, Nev.

Walt Disney World Resort is making land available at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex to accommodate the large facility required to host the tournaments. Walt Disney World Resort will work closely with a third-party - to be announced later - to build and operate the privately-funded bowling center.

“We are excited to play a role in making this dream come true,” said Ken Potrock, senior vice president of Disney Sports Enterprises. “This project is a reminder of just how much we can accomplish for our com-munity when the public and private sectors work together.”

Junior Amateur Tour Wraps Up 35th Seasonby David Yamauchi

It’s been a trying time to be the director of the JAT. In the past two years the JAT family has suffered some very saddening losses. We sud-denly lost three JAT Alums, Derrick Salary, T.C. Giberson and Joel Reyes all well before their time. Just recently, I attended the funeral of T.C.’s mother Lori Giberson who, together with her husband Ray were fantastic supporters of the JAT. Four individuals that were glowing examples of what the JAT is all about- not only bowling but friendship and camara-derie. Bowlers from three completely different areas- Los Angeles, Simi Valley and Chula Vista who came to join friends from all over Southern California on Sunday mornings to do what they loved to do. Four amazing individuals that I never would have had the chance to cross paths with if it wasn’t for bowling.

With a heavy heart I attended each of the four funerals and as I looked around familiar faces surrounded me. I was so proud to see all the support and outreach of the JAT bowlers and parents who came together to help comfort the families of our Alums. It enforced my belief that the JAT is more that just a tournament to bowl on Sunday- it’s truly a family. The sight of generations of bowlers there to pay their respects was truly amazing.

Last month I got the chance to bowl a charity event in memory of Joel Reyes in San Diego. I got a spot on a team with Bob Drake, Larry Campbell and Jason Thomas- 3 guys who I bowled juniors with back in 1989-1991. It was amazing- it seemed like not a day had passed since we had been on the lanes. The couple of hours together ragging on each other, catching up, and talking about “the state of bowling” really made me miss the “old days” of JAT. Four guys from Simi Valley, Canoga Park, Torrance and South Pasadena who came together on Sunday mornings nearly two decades ago back on the lanes together. (We cashed 3rd place!)

Many times alumni ask me, “Is the JAT still around?” I always answer “yes” and tell them that we’re trying hard to keep things going strong. Many bowlers and parents ask me why I’m still around too. It’s because of what JAT meant to me. It was a place where I met my best friends- the guys I still keep in touch with and always look forward to seeing. None of my friends from high school are still around but my friends from JAT surely are. When I finally got married my best man was Larry Campbell, a life-long friend from JAT and my groomsmen were Ramon Torres and Jon Brandon both guys I met through JAT. The guys I bowled with will tell you that I wasn’t much on the lanes- never won a title- but the experi-ence of bowling juniors had such a positive effect on my life that I want to make sure that every scratch junior bowler has the chance to have a JAT career under their belt.

Updating our current status: The year the JAT was able to break-even and award over $15,000 in scholarships and gift cards. Thanks to contribu-tions from friends and families we also raised over $1000 to help one of our JAT families through a time of crisis and raised additional scholarship funds for the JAT with two successful Adult-Junior events. We held a “Grand Reunion” event and welcomed back over 30 years of JAT Alums to bowl side by side with today’s juniors. Miraculously, attendance was up this year at JAT events and we hope the trend will continue next season! If you are an Alum and want to help we can always use it- log on to www.bowljat.org and click the SCJBA link to make a tax-deductable donation to junior bowling- every penny counts!

As another season of JAT comes to a close again I will watch a group of juniors head off to their adult careers. Again I will encourage all the juniors to “age-out”- play out your entire junior career until you have to leave. For 20 years I have been a part of JAT- whether as a Farm Clubber, Boy’s Division bower, Assistant Director or Executive Director- and nearly every bowler that I’ve crossed paths with after they “turned” tells me they miss their days of junior bowling. When I was a junior I didn’t realize that 20 years later I’d be brought to tears laughing about “road trips to Fresno for CSC” or “snow in Vegas on Christmas break”. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is never forgotten. I hope every one of you bowling now has made friends as special and memorable as the friends I’ve made thanks to this great game of bowling.

Tournament results next week. Alums- if you want to be included in JAT Alumni e-mails send a message to [email protected] and we’ll make sure you’re included in all our announcements! Log onto www.bowljat.org for current news and information and check us out on YouTube under Junior Amateur Tour.

No “Con” Here as John Has His “Way” in Rocky Marsh Doubles

by Joy McGregorThe Rocky Marsh Doubles league here at Linbrook Bowl has

been displaying some very HOT scores as of late and we are only three weeks into our summer session. If you want to be entertained, stay cool in the AC and watch some excellent bowlers shoot these “hot” scores, come on down Friday morning at 9:30 and watch the action. You won’t be disappointed!!

Big Bad John Conway certainly DID have his way showing his style on games of 253-215-258 for 726 and added 226 to post a fine 952 set.

Shig Shozi, for the 2nd week in a row, “shoz” he’s one ‘hot’ bowler tossing 204-279-209 and 229 to register 921.

Larry Green, feeling no pain, joined the elite 900 Club firing games of 242-193-233-244 to total 912.

Last week’s headliner “Too Tuff” Tony Hale, proved he IS “tuff” tossing games of 279-205-204 and 217 to post 905.

With only 9 ladies in this fine league, I believe the top female scorer each week deserves her 15 seconds of fame and will be featured. This week we feature Gloria Ferrulli who topped the distaff side and proved her worth on games of 241-199-205 and 219 to register 864. Very nice showing Gloria. Yay!!

More HOT scores: E.J. Rogers 238-894, Bob Gosnell 236-858, Janine Ditch 248-854, Jack Wilson 225-854, Tim Blough 244-851, Willy Bordenave 233-850, Fred Voysey 247-846, Ron Douglass 238-843, Ron Marcus 238-842, Juan Sandoval 236-842, Ed Her-mance 223-832, Alan Bloom 254-832, Lloyd Thierry 235-822, Rey Ortiz 210-814, Joy McGregor 225-811, Kerry Wright 224-810, David Wright 233-806, Gino Vassallo 22-803, Carl Adinolfi 246, Tom Keehn 228, Hong Kha 228, Jack Polee 217, Kyle Osterman 214, Dora Miller 214, Al Lara 213, Ed Mote 213, Rose Williams 211, Kantral Williams 211, Tony Angulo 209, Rich Heid 205, Lisa Somma 204 and John Phillips 200.

We thank Jack Polee for stepping up and filling a vacancy on our league. Welcome!

Keep up those HOT scores and hope all you dads out there enjoyed their Father’s Day. Until next week...
