2014 Junior Fed Beef Career & Leadership Program

Texas Cattle Feeders Association, in conjunction with Texas AgriLife Extension Service and West Texas A&M University, will host the 2014 Junior Fed Beef Career and Leadership Program, popularly referred to as Feedyard Camp, June 23-25 in Canyon. This program is open to any incoming high school juniors and sen-iors who have an interest in pursuing a career in feedyard opera-tions and management and the fed beef industry.

This program is a great opportunity for students who have the de-sire and potential to be future feedyard employees and managers, because it exposes them to the many career opportunities there are in feedyard operations and cattle feeding.

The Junior Fed Beef Career & Leadership Program is made possi-ble through sponsorships by TCFA-member feedyards and TCFA’s Allied Industry companies. There is no registration fee for the camp; however, participants in the program are responsible for their transportation to and from Canyon.

Interested students must fill out the application and return it to the TCFA office by May 1. The selection committee will select 20 students to participate in the program; however, the selection committee reserves the right to determine the number of students selected. Selected students will be notified by May 15.

For more information or to download an application, please visit www.tcfa.org. Should any questions arise, please contact Kayla Lanford at 806-358-3681, or by email [email protected].

SILVER SPURS 4-H CLUB

March has been an exciting month for the Silver Spurs! On the 10th the team headed to Houston for the HLSR 4-H/FFA Horse Judging Contest. Both junior and senior teams competed. Horse judging encompasses many faucets such as: western horsemanship, hunter under saddle, reining, halter, western pleasure and individual judging. During the competition the team enjoyed a complimentary BBQ lunch. Top placing individuals included senior Alyssa Ballew with a ranking of 56 and juniors Jacob and Alyssa Ingram with respec-tive rankings of 35 and 38. The senior team placed overall at 20 and the junior team had a team ranking of 36. The Silver Spurs enjoyed snacking on "junk food" during the drive down and dining out twice while in Houston. New friend-ships were forged and pillow fights ensued! The team wants to thank it's tireless coaches: Julie Hinz and Monica Bishop as well as devoted parent volunteers like Mr. Ingram, Mrs. Ballew and Mrs. Venable. They all work hard to bring out our best!
