Did you know that having good oral health is an important part of healthy aging? There is a perception that as we age, it is inevitable that we will experience tooth decay, pain in our teeth and bleeding gums. Butthatisnottrue-havingproblems with our teeth is not a normal part of aging. Just like our dentists and oral hygienists said all along - if we take care of our teeth, gums and mouth we can maintain great oral health at any age.

Howdowemakesurewearetakinggoodcareof our “pearly whites”? First, make sure you are using the right tools and techniques for cleaning your teeth and gums and that work best for you. If you have not tried an electric toothbrush yet you may want to check them out. Using an electric toothbrush provides better cleaning for your teeth, gums and tongue than your old manual toothbrush. Just turn it on and guide it over your teeth - you don’t have to worry about what motion or pressure to use, it does it for you.

Flossing is as important as brushing, so if you have difficulty using floss check out the different types of flossing tools. For those who have arthritis pain or limited strength in their hand or arm, there are tools that can adapt the handles of tooth brushes and floss aides to make them easier to hold.

Using a mouth rinse is also a recommendation. Mouth rinse helps to stop decay and also kill the bacteria that can cause gum disease and bad breath. If you have problems with dry mouth or

painful ulcers there are products that can help. To find out which tools

and techniques are best for you, schedule time with your dentist, primary doctor or physical therapist.

Second, focus on how much saliva you are producing.

Saliva actually has protective properties that can help us avoid

yeast infections, gum disease and tooth decay. Unfortunately many

medications and some illnesses can limit our production of saliva and cause dry

mouth. If you are noticing that your mouth is dry and that your taste buds are off, contact your doctor or pharmacist to see if there are other medications that you could try.

Third, pay attention to what you are eating and how often.Eatinglotsofsugaryfoodscancausegermsto produce acid, leading to tooth and gum decay and cavities. Think about it this way, every time you eat something with sugar, the bacteria in your mouth will produce acids that continue to burn your teeth and gums for twenty minutes.

Last but not least, see your dentist on a regular schedule for routine checkups and cleanings. Following these steps will help you maintain good oral health throughout your life.

Caregiver Connection

Communication is an important part of daily life. It not only defines who we are but helps us connect to the people and the world around us. When you’re caring for someone with dementia, you may observe changes in that person’s ability to share their thoughts and ideas with you. For instance, you might notice they have difficulty finding the right words, repeat thoughts, lose their

train of thought, or experience difficulty putting their words in the rightorder.Herearesometipsto improve communication with someone who has dementia:

Show Your InterestIt’s important to let the person you’re talking with know you’re interested in talking with them. This can be done in simple ways: make eye contact, smile and keep an

open, welcoming posture during your conversation. Approach from the front and identify yourself. Also be sure to call the person you’re talking with by name to help get their attention.

Keep It SimpleFor successful conversations, use short, simple words and sentences, and ask only one question at a time. You don’t

want to overwhelm the listener with details or cause confusion. Keep to your point while speaking slowly and clearly. In addition, limit distractions - like background noise or other people joining your conversation - to help the person you’re talking with focus on what you’re saying.

Be PatientWhen someone has dementia, their brain processes the words they’re hearing at a slower rate. Besuretogivethemextratimeto think about what you’re saying and form a response. If the person has problems responding, it’s okay to encourage them to keep trying to express themselves or gently suggest words they might be looking for.

Avoid Criticizing or CorrectingHighlightinganincorrectwordchoice or phrase can cause undo anxiety for someone with dementia. Instead of telling them they used a “wrong” word, listen to their words and try to find the meaning of what they’re saying. For instance, they may say they’ve lost their hand clock when they’re looking for their wrist watch.

Avoid ArguingIf the person you’re talking with says something wrong or you don’t agree with them, let it go. Arguing will only escalate the situation and won’t move the conversation forward.

Focus on FeelingsOften, the emotions being shared are more important than the actual words being said. Try to find the feelings they’re expressing behind their words and respond accordingly.

Following these tips can greatly improve communication for both you and the person you’re talking to. With all new skills, it can take time to consistently make changes to the way we talk with someone, but the end result of better, more connected communication will be worth it! INDEPENDENT AND UPRIGHT – A FREE PROGRAM TO REDUCE FALL RISKS IN YOUR HOMEA drop…a slip…could turn into a hospital trip! Marshfield Clinic, in partnership with community agencies, developed Independent and Upright to empower older adults to stay independent and in their homes. The program provides free in-home visits by a senior volunteer to identify fall risks in the home environment and provide community resources for fall prevention. The program is currently available for all community members in Lincoln County and in Marshfield, and will be expanding to all of Wood County soon.

To participate in the program, or refer a friend, contact Laura Zelenak at Marshfield Clinic Center for Community Outreach at 715-221-8400 or visit cco.marshfieldclinic.org.

Volunteers NeededVolunteers are needed to conduct home visits and

educate clients about fall risks. The ideal volunteer is interested in supporting seniors, possesses good communication skills, is empathetic and age 55+ (not required). Volunteers are required to complete the Marshfield Clinic application process and training. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Laura Zelenak at 715-221-8400.

JULY IS SUN SAFETY MONTHDid you know that your skin is the largest organ of the body? Our skin protects us against injury, sun, infection, and heat. It is very important to take care of your skin, especially from the harmful rays of the sun. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause cancer, but it can also cause age spots, wrinkles, dry “leathery” skin, and over exposure to the sun can cause eye problems. Recent years have brought about many reports of the weakening of the ozone layer around the earth which can produce more harmful ultraviolet rays to come through.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN: 1. Wear protective clothing like a long sleeve shirt and pants. We all know that on a beautiful summer day with high humidity and high temperatures the last thing we want on is long sleeve shirts and pants, but they help to protect the skin if you will be outside. Keep your shorts and tank tops for when you are inside the home or on a covered patio. Remember that even on cloudy days and in the winter months your skin is being exposed to ultraviolet light.

2. Avoid sunburns. It can happen so easily when you are outside, especially if you have fair skin. Exposuresof15minutesormorecancreatequitea burn. Remember that the more you sunburn the higher your risk of skin cancer.

3. Reflective surfaces can heighten a sun burn. Beingaroundwater, snow, orsandcanreflectthe sun and create a burn. Take care to limit your exposure to reflective surfaces.

4. Seek shade between the hottest hours of the day. Beingoutinthesunbetween10a.m.and4p.m.are

when the ultraviolet rays are their strongest. Sit in the shade or stay indoors during this time.

5. Wear a sunscreen that says it is broad spectrum, which covers all the UV rays that the sun produces. To be safe, always choose a sunscreen that has a 15 or higher protection.

6.Bekindtoyoureyesalso.Eyescanbeaffectedby the sun’s rays so buy sunglasses that have a 100% sun protectant and wear a wide brimmed hat to provide shade for your eyes, face, and top of your head. Some concerns with your eyes by the sun include cataracts and macular degeneration.

Following these tips can provide skin that is protected through your life time. Did you know that skin cancer shows up later in adult life? People that have spent years in the sun will sometimes experience multiple skin cancers as they age. Check your skin each time you shower to see if there are changes in any moles that you may have or if there are new patches on your skin that don’t look quite right.Haveyourphysiciancheckyourskinwhenyouhave your physical, especially areas that are hard to see like your back.

Tanning beds are also bad for you. They provide direct ultraviolet light to your skin. It may look nice to be tanned all over, but you are creating yet another chance for skin cancer in later life.

Bekindtoyourselfandtoyourskin–practicesunsafety.

As always, if you have any questions or need help finding a resource to help you please call your local ADRC at 888-486-9545.

KNOW YOUR ... MEMORY??Over the years, we’ve all been told that we should know our numbers, meaning having an idea of our bloodpressure, bloodsugar,BMI,etc.Butrarelydowe hear any suggestions to know our memory. As we age, we may realize or fear that our memory is becoming less sharp as we cram more and more information into our brains. Many of us have that fleeting thought that we must be in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s Disease when we can’t recall the name of our high school principal or forget a medical appointment that was scheduled three months ago. While some changes in memory as we age can be expected, there is a point where it can become a concern. Often discussion of memory is never brought up in medical visits with our physicians unless we ourselves ask about it or a family member passes their concern along. While there is no cure at this time for dementia, it is important to detect any potential issues early on while there are opportunities to have discussions and begin planning if there is truly an irreversible condition. There are treatments for some types of dementia which are meant to treat the

symptoms associated with it and there are some memory issues that can be reversed if caused by an infection, medication interactions, vitamin deficiency, etc. In an effort to assist people in having discussions of memory concerns and knowing their baseline when it comes to memory, the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central WI is able to offer simple memory screens. These screens are not meant to diagnose or rule out a memory disorder, but meant to give people a baseline in terms of their memory functioning and possibly begin to have discussions of any concerns that may be occurring. The memory screens offered are simple and quick and copies of them can be passed along to your primary physician with your permission. There is no charge for these screens and they can be conducted in an ADRC-CW office location, your own home, or whatever setting you find most comfortable. If interested in a no-charge memory screen, please contact the ADRC-CW office most convenient for you or call 1-888-486-9545.
