Record and mixIn Adobe Audition 2.0, a new low-latency mixing engine with ASIO hardware support allows greater creative flexibility, with real-time effects and input monitoring to keep you in the mix at all times. Automatic delay compensation keeps everything in sync while you mix an unlimited number of tracks, including up to 80 simultaneous input and output devices. The revamped Mixer panel lets you set up whatever type of routing you need, using inputs, outputs, sends, and buses. The clear layout allows you to see all your settings at a glance. Parameter automation can be recorded and adjusted in the mixer itself, or in the new automation lanes in the timeline. Adobe Audition 2.0 lets you punch into tracks for re-recording new takes on the fly. Whatever your project—recording a song, mastering an album, or creating a soundtrack—Adobe Audition 2.0 can bring out your best creative ideas and help them come through loud and clear in the mastered mix.

Low-latency mixing engineWith the new low-latency mixing engine built into the core of Adobe Audition 2.0, enjoy outstanding speed and power in all of your recording and mixing work. Mix your tracks on the fly, hearing changes as you make them. The new mixing engine offers tremendous routing flexibility using sends and buses, with solid support for all the effects you want.

ASIO driver supportWork with high-performance audio devices that use the ASIO driver model. ASIO drivers allow hardware to operate with very low latency, enhancing performance and enabling features such as live input monitoring.

Recordable parameter automationAdobe Audition 2.0 allows you to record changes as you make them to your mix parameters by using standard write, touch, and latch modes. Parameter changes are recorded as envelopes in the new automation lanes so they can be edited later to adjust or create automation changes.

Hardware controller automationWhile any operation in Adobe Audition 2.0 can be controlled using the mouse and keyboard, sometimes you may prefer to use specialized controllers while mixing. If you decide to mix parts of your session with exter-nal controllers, Adobe Audition 2.0 supports recordable parameter automation using hardware devices.

Audio mixing sends and insertsIn Adobe Audition 2.0, you can now add up to 16 sends per channel, giving you efficient, flexible techniques for mixing and monitoring your sessions. Use CPU power more efficiently by creating sends on several tracks that go to a bus with a reverb or other effects applied. Or use sends and buses to create mixes for specific purposes, such as a headphone mix for a vocalist.

The revamped Mixer panel lets you set up inputs, outputs, sends, and buses. The clear layout shows all of your mix settings at a glance.

Real-time input monitoringIn Adobe Audition 2.0, you can apply an effect while recording and listen in as the track is altered in real time. For musicians who like hearing a reverb during their performances, real-time input monitoring can be a valuable tool, allowing them to hear changes as they occur. Real-time input monitoring can also be used to adjust a track’s volume as a session plays to properly blend it with other tracks.

Quick PunchAdobe Audition 2.0 lets you punch into tracks on the fly, just like you would on a tape deck. You can quickly fix recording errors by punching in corrections as you re-record. Toggle the record button to punch in your new take only where you want it to replace the old one, with no need to enter a special mode. You just record-enable your tracks and go, punching in and out as many times as you want.

Automatic delay compensationAdobe Audition 2.0 automatically corrects delays throughout the entire signal chain. This allows you to add filters and effects without causing synchronization problems.

Effects chain on all channels, buses, and master Add effects to the master channel and hear the results in real-time. This gives you great flexibility to create complex mixes and hear your master channel effects as you mix, instead of only after you mix down the session. Add up to 16 effects to each audio or bus track, either pre-fader (default) or post-fader, and play them in real time.

Improved recording performance Enjoy faster performance and more economical use of hard drive space in Adobe Audition 2.0. Sessions are now saved and recorded directly to the final working file, so there is no need to wait before moving on to other work. Recording is also now non-destructive. Create multiple takes, and then select the one you want by right-clicking on the recording area.

Unlimited tracks in Multitrack View Multitrack file input and management is simple and intuitive because Adobe Audition 2.0 gives you an unlimited capacity to mix together multilayered sessions. Add and delete tracks to fit the size of your session, and simply add more tracks as your project grows. Never worry about session time, as the time limits in Edit View and Multitrack View have been increased and are only limited by your hard drive space.

Up to 80 live inputs and outputsAdobe Audition 2.0 can use 80 simultaneous live inputs and outputs in a multitrack session, giving you great flexibility and plenty of hardware options while recording and mixing.

In Multitrack View, display as many audio tracks as you need and precisely synchronize them with your video clips.

Create and arrangeThe Adobe Audition 2.0 workspace is completely customizable. Show only the panels you need and hide the rest. Save commonly used workspace layouts for later recall. Adobe Audition 2.0 supports more video formats than before, with the ability to import and export AVI, MPEG, WMV, and QuickTime. Integration with Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro software has also improved. Using After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro, you can select any clip and send it to Adobe Audition 2.0 for audio editing by using the Edit in Adobe Audition command. Explore new creative possibilities with looping tools and thousands of included uncompressed 32-bit loops that you can add to existing compositions or use to create professional-quality music from scratch. When you are short on time, 20 ready-to-play music beds are included in 15-second and 30-second lengths. Adobe Bridge and Adobe XMP metadata allow you to tag and search files for a more efficient workflow.

Broader video format supportYou can import and export an AVI, MPEG, WMV, or QuickTime video file into Adobe Audition 2.0 to edit its soundtrack or create an entirely new one. When your soundtrack work is finished, you can export the audio back into the video file without changing the video stream. To make lining up audio cues easier, imported video shows customizable thumbnails in Multitrack View, and markers in video files that were created with Adobe Premiere Pro come through to Adobe Audition. (Note: MPEG-2 support is only included when Adobe Audition is part of Adobe Production Studio.)

Tighter integration with Adobe Premiere Pro and After EffectsUsing Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, you can now select any audio clip, regardless of its source, and send it to Adobe Audition 2.0 for editing by using the Edit in Adobe Audition command. Instead of import-ing and exporting clips between applications, take advantage of this integration to speed up your editing and production process.

Improved user interfaceAdobe Audition 2.0 offers an updated and streamlined user interface, including new workspace panels that dock and group for easy desktop organization, a new Mixer panel, and an upgraded Effects Rack. The same system of workspace panels is found in Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, After Effects 7.0, and Adobe Encore DVD 2.0, which means that using these applications together is more intuitive than ever before.

Custom workspacesAdobe Audition 2.0 provides named workspaces—predefined arrangements of user interface panels—to optimize productivity for different project tasks. For example, you can choose one predefined workspace for frequency space editing, and another for session mixing. Adjustments you make to any workspace are automatically saved and appear the next time you choose that workspace. You can revert any workspace to its original arrangement. You can also save new named workspaces for specific tasks.

Uncompressed -bit music loopsBuild loop-based tracks in Adobe Audition 2.0 from a library with thousands of royalty-free, 32-bit, uncompressed music loops. These high-quality samples allow you to build on existing projects or create compositions from the ground up. Adobe Audition 2.0 keeps the tracks in pitch and tempos in sync.

Session Mixing (left) and Mastering and Analysis (right) are two of the task-specific named workspaces provided with Adobe Audition 2.0.

Ready-to-use music bedsIf short on time or not interested in building your own compositions, skip to the finish by using any of the 20 royalty-free music beds included with Adobe Audition 2.0. Beds are provided in 15- and 30-second lengths.

Adobe BridgeGet fast, efficient access to all your creative assets with Adobe Bridge. Use it to easily locate, browse, and organize files—Adobe Bridge keeps all your images, video, and audio files at your fingertips. Numerous views of assets, including Thumbnails, Filmstrip, and Details, and a preview player for audio and video, make it easy to identify particular assets. Searching for files is also made easier with XMP metadata support.

XMP metadata supportAdobe Audition 2.0 improves your ability to catalog reference information and find files across multiple applications with the addition of XMP metadata support. When adding files into a session, information about the contents, copyright status, size, origin, and history will be important to record so you can quickly find and group files. If you already have content-management systems in place to capture file properties, you can create custom panels in Adobe Audition 2.0 to allow entry of any type of information you need.

Edit and masterAdobe Audition 2.0 features new and enhanced tools to give you power, control, and flexibility in your editing and mastering projects. Audible scrubbing helps you scan and find selections in audio files, and listen in to isolate specific points. Frequency space editing is a unique and powerful method of audio analysis and editing. Now you have more precise control with the ability to make irregularly shaped frequency selections using the Lasso tool. The new Spectral Controls panel helps you identify frequencies in low and high ampli-tudes, with a color bar to help you dynamically bring out contrasts in the spectral display for easier editing. Use the Spectral Pan and Phase displays to view your audio as a plot of pan position or phase over time to find problems or edit points. A new Mastering Rack gives you the ability to preview multiple effects simulta-neously in Edit View. The multiband compressor helps you add clarity and definition to your audio to balance out the final mix.

Audible scrubbingQuickly find the audio you want to edit using two convenient modes of audible scrubbing. Tape-style scrubbing lets you simulate “rocking the reels” back and forth slower than normal playback to listen for a hard-to-find edit point. Shuttle-style scrubbing lets you quickly scan through a whole file looking for a specific section.

Use Adobe Bridge to help you locate and organize all the multimedia files associated with your projects.

Enhanced frequency space editingAdobe Audition 2.0 has improved frequency space editing tools to lend more flexibility and control to your editing process, especially in audio restoration work.

Lasso tool. One of the most powerful features of Adobe Audition 2.0 is the ability to select frequencies directly in the Spectral Frequency Display to visually analyze, isolate, and repair audio. The new free-form Lasso tool gives you the flexibility to make selections of any shape. The Marquee tool can be used for quick selection of rectangular areas.

Here, the two white areas are selections made with the Lasso tool. When work-ing with stereo, you can use the Lasso tool to select a sound in one channel, and have the same portion selected in the other channel simultaneously.

Spectral Controls. The new Spectral Controls features a color bar that allows you to dynamically adjust the colors used in the Spectral Frequency Display. This allows you to bring out contrasts in audio files and better isolate individual elements for editing. Isolate a specific range of amplitude or frequency and make adjustments to define the sound in your audio.

Dynamically adjusting colors in the Spectral Frequency Display brings out contrasts in audio and helps you edit with precision.

Logarithmic spectral view. Choose between linear and logarithmic displays in Spectral Frequency Display, depending on how you want to view the data in your files. The logarithmic scale displays audio in a range more closely resembling that of human hearing, and gives more space to bass frequencies in the display. If you want to see decibel values over time and frequency—especially handy in quiet ranges—set the logarithmic display to have colors change with the values. Adjustments like this can be useful if, for example, you want to bring up the levels of a voice track while diminishing bass or drums in the same time frame. Adobe Audition 2.0 allows you to do this in a mixed-down file without going back to the original source tracks.

Phase analysis histogram viewKeeping your audio in phase is a critical part of the mixing and mastering process. Adobe Audition 2.0 has added the Phase Analysis Histogram View, a powerful tool for analyzing phase differences in stereo wave-forms. Phase Analysis Histogram View presents an easier way to see the percentage of your audio that is in

Page 8: Adobe Audition 2 - Adobe · PDF fileRecord and mix In Adobe Audition 2.0, a new low-latency mixing engine with ASIO hardware support allows greater creative flexibility, with real-time

or out of phase, and gives an overall indicator of phase content. A colored ball in the middle of the graph shows when the waveform is in phase (green) and out of phase (red). The Phase Wheel can be used to display the phase of individual frequencies, with higher ones appearing on the outer edges of the graph.

The Phase Analysis Histogram View shows where audio is in and out of phase. This helps you make sure different parts of a wave won’t cancel out when summed to mono or mixed with other tracks.

Spectral Pan and Phase displayUse the Spectral Pan Display to show the loudness of audio in the left and right pan fields of your audio clip. Sound over time is plotted on the x-axis, with the amplitude at various pan positions left and right (top and bottom in the graph) denoted by different colors in the display. Turn on prism mode to add a color-coded overlay of frequency values.

Spectral Pan Display shows left and right pan positions of audio over time, with time on the x-axis and pan position on the y-axis. In this image, the green audio at the top shows a synthesizer that is playing in the mid-frequencies and is panned 70% left.

Use the Spectral Phase Display to see at a glance which sections of your recording are in and out of phase. Use regular mode to display color-coded amplitude based on phase. Use prism mode to overlay color-coded frequency information.

Save CD layoutsThe layout of a your CD can be saved if you need to later make adjustments or burn additional copies. You can now burn up to 99 copies of a CD, one at a time in a single session.

Broadcast wave supportEnjoy easier interchange with third-party hardware and software systems that use the Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) timestamp. Broadcast wave files contain important information that can be read by audio recording, production, and delivery systems. BWF extends the metadata fields to include information such as text, dates, and timing parameters. One advantage of inputting timestamp information with your files is that when you import them into Multitrack View, you can automatically spot-insert the clip into your session at its time-stamp location.

Improved performance for editingExperience improved performance in areas such as displaying clips for editing in Spectral Frequency Display and applying effects, such as Reverb and Time Stretch. Many of the tools and features in Adobe Audition 2.0 are up to three times faster, giving you a new level of speed, power, and efficiency.

Ogg Vorbis format supportImport and export Ogg Vorbis audio files (.ogg) directly from Adobe Audition 2.0.
