Best Practices

Post Observation Conference

Conversation (POC)

Page 8: ADMN 6130 Class 5. » Discuss conclusions from Data Reviews, Focused Observations, and Clinical Observations NC Teacher Evaluation Process expectations

Preparing for the POC1. Schedule the POC before the OBSV

˃ Time and Location˃ Remind teachers of opportunity to bring artifacts to the POC

2. Don’t wait 10 days – try for 3-5.

3. Study your observation notes ˃ Use Post-Its as tabs for important observations (+ or -)

4. Organize the process˃ Protect the Teacher’s and YOUR Due Process˃ Data Reviews of lesson plans, assessments, grade-book?˃ Teacher-added documents?˃ Have all needed documents on hand

5. Complete your portion of the Observation Summary˃ Use extra pages if necessary to make comments and suggestions˃ Negative observations/comments require positive suggestions/plans˃ Give a time frame with suggestions for improvement˃ Make sure the teacher signs off on the extra pages and gets a copy

6. Plan/practice how you will start/end the POC with a positive first remark7. A script or outline is a good idea when …

˃ You are new at the process˃ When the conference may be contentious and/or˃ When you have specific improvements you will discuss

Page 9: ADMN 6130 Class 5. » Discuss conclusions from Data Reviews, Focused Observations, and Clinical Observations NC Teacher Evaluation Process expectations

Conducting the POC1. Welcome them

˃ Remember how it felt for you

2. Go over the process for the POC˃ What do you want to accomplish (objectives) ˃ What are you required to do (NCTEP procedures/requirements)˃ The order of the conference

+ As teacher reviews OBSV notes …+ You review Lesson Plans, Assessment, Grading artifacts+ Discuss the lesson

3. The Nitty-Gritty˃ Recognize that nervousness and stress is always present˃ ALWAYS BEGIN WITH: “Were the observation notes an accurate and objective picture of the

lesson?”˃ Transition to discussing the lesson˃ Any suggestions/directives for improvement should come with specific timeframes and detailed

expectations (Due Process)˃ Ask if the teacher has any added artifacts evidence Complete all forms. ˃ Make copies if additional evidence is gathered during the POC and have teacher sign off on them

Page 10: ADMN 6130 Class 5. » Discuss conclusions from Data Reviews, Focused Observations, and Clinical Observations NC Teacher Evaluation Process expectations

» If you taught this lesson again tomorrow, what would you change?» What did you think was the strongest aspect of this lesson? » What strategy or strategies did you find most effective in terms of student

learning? Least effective? Why? » Did your use of technology contribute to student learning? Why or why

not? » How effective were your assessment strategies in helping you evaluate

student learning? » How will you use the assessment data to improve your teaching and/or

plan future lessons? » How will you use assessment information to improve and/or extend

student learning? » What areas of strength and growth do you want to note for the PGP

The Summative Evaluation

Instrument for Growth?

We are met with two difficulties that never fail us. The enthusiasm of the young teacher must be rightly

guided, and the too strong conservatism of the old and experienced teacher must be quickened and newly

inspired.Annual Report of the Owensboro Public Schools 1899-1900

Page 12: ADMN 6130 Class 5. » Discuss conclusions from Data Reviews, Focused Observations, and Clinical Observations NC Teacher Evaluation Process expectations

Summative Evaluation Goals• To accurately represent overall

performance over a designated period of time

• To provide a tool and process for professional growth and development

• To provide a legally sound process if a recommendation is challenged and/or reviewed

• To fulfill the community’s expectations for performance as represented through board policy

Page 13: ADMN 6130 Class 5. » Discuss conclusions from Data Reviews, Focused Observations, and Clinical Observations NC Teacher Evaluation Process expectations

Summative Evaluation Assumptions

• Evaluatee clearly understands the general goals and specific expectations of the process

• Evaluator understands expectations and can reliably assess performance

• Evaluator ratings of performance are tied directly to objective evidence

• An accurate evaluation is the result of consideration of a broad range of data

• Responsibility for providing data is a joint responsibility of evaluator and evaluatee

Surviving the SE• This is part of your job: Do it right. Do it

well. • No Hoop Jumping• Make sure that anything negative on the

SE is not a surprise for the teacher– My goal was to have a data gathering process

so transparent that the SE was no big surprise

• Action Plans, non-renewals, and terminations should NEVER be surprises

• Make it about growth not just evaluation• Don’t expect anyone to enjoy the process
