    About Me

I am a New Media Design post-graduate student from Naonal Instute of Design, Gandhinagar(Gujarat), interested in the eld of learning and informaon sharing. As a subset of this domain,

I am also interested in educaon and I am parcularly excited by the roles dierent modes of

communicaon can play in engaging children in the process of home learning

I have combined my educaon as an engineer at undergraduate level in Electronics andInstrumentaon Engineering and a designer to have a more systemic approach to problem-

solving. I have used this approach in most of the projects that I have worked on. Primarily

focused towards learning through dierent mediums, I have also used ethnographic research

as a tool for understanding needs and concerns of people with dierent societal and cultural

backgrounds at various places and instuons.

I thinkthe mulplicity of domains in which I have been educated, enables me to understandand work towards hands on experience with various mediums of communicaon and expression

apart from logical analysis and systemic thought. I can now combine various ideaon processes

in the domain of design like brain storming, contextual enquiries and user studies et al with

thought-processes targeted towards implementaon such as feasibility analysis, ecology

    studies and logisc enquiry etc.

I believe that learning is a very innate growth process. It involves transions that usuallydont have a dened set of triggers. Borrowing from the Montessori pedagogy, I believe in the

importance of the absorbent mind, the limitless movaon of the young child to achieve

competence over his or her environment and to perfect his or her skills and understanding

as they occur. But it would be wrong to just limit the scope of learning to children. Learning

is incremental and systemac addions to mental structures around concepts and ideas.

Designing to incenvize this process has limitless possibilies.

Poocho Poocho - An Educational Device on MenstruationIndividual Project | Duraon: 4 weeks

    Project Brief

The aim was to create an educaonal device that can provide

informaon on Menstruaon to girls in an interesng

manner. The project focuses urban girls as the target users

who are about to undergo or have just undergone the phase

of Menarche (the rst occurrence of menstrual cycle in girls).

The physiology of menstruaon is selected as the subject to

be dealt with in the project.

    Background

Menstruaon and menstrual pracces are sll clouded by

taboos and sociocultural restricons resulng in adolescent

girls remaining ignorant of the scienc facts. The area is sll

under closeness and there is a hesitaon factor in the elders

while imparng such kind of informaon.

    Process

I wanted the device to be such that it arises an urge in the

user to know more. Considering the resources and media an

urban girl has access to, along with the degree of privacy that

goes around the subject, a computer game was developed.

Every stage in the game explains a bit of the process of

menstruaon while the incenves keep the player glued to

the game ll she has known all that the game has to oer.

The game also encourages a healthy discussion among the

    family members.

Prithvi - An Interactive Globe for ChildrenGroup Project | Duraon: 1 week

    Project Brief

This project is an aempt to create an informaon providing

system that breaks apart from convenonal systems and

makes informaon available in a more interacve, engaging

and intuive manner. The project focuses on 8-10 years

old children as primary target users. For subject purpose

it shows the journey of Earth and human evoluon in me

from Jurassic era to the modern age.

    Background

Children at primary grade are not only new to school educaon

but also to books as a medium to derive informaon. Their

learning process prior to schools involved exploraon,

interacon and engagement with the environment through

various sensory channels. Thus making them more apt for

an exploratory (rather than instruconal) learning involving

    interacon through various senses.

    Process

The journey of Earth was broadly divided into 4 phases:

    1st Phase - Jurassic Era

    2nd Phase - Early civilizaon

3rd Phase - Age of Emperors and Empires4th Phase - Modern Age

Animaon corresponding to each phase was created.

To abide by users mental model of the subject, the interfaceis modelled to depict a globe with sockets into which human

shaped plugs can be plugged in.

The sockets in the globe are connected to a computer

through a keyboard circuit. The computer is connected to

a display that shows the animaon currently being played.

A Flash applicaon running in the computer, progresses the

animaon to the next phase with every increment in the

number of sockets on the globe.

The act of placing a human plug in a socket on the globe

implies introducing certain human populaon on the Earth,

which would in turn trigger a change in visuals on the screento depict a new phase in the Earths journey. Users interacon

with the globe also tries to establish a relaonship between

increase in human populaon and its eect on Earth.

Research on tribal education systemIndividual Project | Duraon: 4 weeks

    Project Brief

Aim of the project was to know and understand about

exisng informal educaon among the Adivasis of Jharkhand

and make the knowledge accessible to others.

    Background

There exists many unique pracces of social interacon

among the Adivasis of Jharkhand. Git-Ora and Akhra are

such two pracces among the Munda Adivasis of Jharkhand.

Gi-Ora is a youth educaon system while Akhra is a

community learning centre. These pracces encourage open

interacon among people from all age groups and between

opposite sexes. It inslls a sense of social responsibility in

the individuals and makes them aware of their own culture.

In these pracces individuals grow up to become responsible

    community person.

    Process

I visited a village of Munda tribes called Maranghada at

a distance of 60 Kilometers from Ranchi (Jharkhand). I

interacted with a few people of that village to know more

about them. During research I came in contact with various

people and organisaons working in this domain. I obtained

a few books from them to carry out a literature research on

this subject. I came to know about their folklores and how itconstutes their religious belief system.

To make the knowledge that I gathered, accessible to others

    I created a web page at hp://mundafolklores.wetpaint.

com/. Along with text and pictures the web site also contains

a drawn representaon of one of the Munda folktales.

System Thinking - Understanding and DepictionGroup Project | Duraon: 4 weeks

    Project Brief

The objecve was to understand an exisng system consisng

of various enes, role that these enes play in it and

relaon that they share with each other. The project focuses

on the market at Teen Darwaza, Ahmedabad (Gujarat) as a

    system.

    Background

System is ubiquitous enty. Every thing that exits around us

is part of a system which intern is a part of a bigger system

Seemingly unrelated enes belonging to a system are

interrelated as transfer of informaon, maer or energy

takes place. A change in any one enty has an aect on the

other enty. Problem exing at a place in the system might

have its cause at seemingly unrelated place in a system.

    Process

Teen-Darwaza market at Old Ahemadabad, Gujrat was

studied based on close observaons and interviews.

A map was made which was divided into layers and showing

relaons between the various enes of the system.

A panel was made which depicted the shops, people,

resources, architecture available at the place.

A mulmedia installaon was done to bring out the

    experience of the Teen-Darwaza.

Usage of sound, light, movie, a panel, photography exhibion

and puppet show was done to bring the look and feel of the

    place.

Information Design for bus routes and schedulesIndividual Project | Duraon: 4 weeks

Project BriefThis project was aimed at designing and depicng the

informaon about bus routes and schedule of Gandhinagar

State Bus Transportaon. The depicted informaon must

provide answers to passengers basic quesons related to

    planning a journey.

    Background

While planning a journey, the passengers seek answers to

basic quesons like which bus should he take, its schedule,

fare, duraon of journey and so on. Informaon boards

at bus stands oen dont cater eecvely to these basic

quesons. They fail to answer either due to lack of adequate

informaon or due to improper depicon of the available

    informaon.

    Process

A few bus trips were made to various places to experience

dierent situaons that a passenger typically faces. An

extensive eld study was carried out that involved studying

the exisng informaon boards and panels, interacon with

the administraon, bus drivers, bus conductors as well as the

passengers to know the informaon they can provide and

the informaon that they seek. Transport scenarios at other

cies like Paris and Munich were studied. A large amountof relevant data was gathered from various departments of

Gandhinagar bus depot to work on. Aer analysing the nature

of data and requirements of the passenger, informaon was

    redesigned and more intuively depicted.

Story Telling using various MediaGroup Project | Duraon: 2 weeks

Project BriefThe main aim of the project was to understand various

techniques of linear and non-linear ways of story-telling.

Stories inspired by real life scenarios had to be represented

in non-linear narraves. Stories from the people at Law

Garden, Ahemedabad were taken and represented in non-

linear form. A sound track was synthesized for linear story

    telling.

    Background

Narraves are the basic tool of communicaon .Be it a day

to day conversaon, a game or a web site. A good narrave

engages audience and keep it interested in the subject.

    Process

Stories about the life of the people were collected by

interacng with them and interviewing them.

Those stories of their day to day life, dreams and ambions

were then converted into interesng narrave.

For non-liner depicon of various stories of various people ,

a panel was made. Each shop had their respecve story.

Movie of still imagesIndividual Project | Duraon: 2 weeks

Project BriefAim of the project was to visualize a piece of music and make

    a video out of it

    Background

Sound creates a sense of space in the mind of listener, it

triggers imaginaon and starts to visualize the sound.

    Process

A sound track was selected and listened to while rapidly

sketching out the visuals that the music triggered.

Realizaon of the visuals was done by taking clay as amedium of expression.

Sll images of various parts of the clay model were taken.

Use of various camera angles and coloured lighng were

used to bring out the required mood.

The sll images were then synchronised with the sound

track and a movie was made out of it.
