CLUB NEWS from our President

Hi Everyone,

Well we’re getting closer to our Annual General Meeting I urge members to consider nominating for the committee. We especially will need a secretary as Rob Smith will be retiring from the position.

More and more we are seeing less and less of our young artists and budding artists performing at our clubs. Where are they all? Is it the age of the audiences? I don’t think so. Is it uncool to sing Country Music? I don’t know what the present up and coming singers think, but if it’s uncool then I feel very sorry for them because in my eyes it’s cool to be an individual. Anyone can sing Pop music, but it’s a unique style to sing country. On that point, if a young person wants to eventually sing Pop, then why not start with country? Where else can you get up on stage and practice in front of large audiences as often as you like? Let’s face it, there is a club on every weekend to practice at.

I have seen young people over the past come to our club and eventually they brought their friends and those friends decided they’d like to have a go as well, but that all seems to be in the past.

We (our Club) may be old in the eyes of the young ones, but we still appreciate watching and listening to young new talent and of course we still have the ‘Len Wakefield’ trophy and encouragement award to go to a lucky winner every year.

It would be so great to see an invasion of young people back in all the clubs, especially on the committees as well. SO WHERE ARE YOU ALL? Be an individual!

Our band for April, Midnight Mountain Blue proved very popular with patrons. They played great sets of good old Country Music.

Trish Wilson has a beautiful voice, and although battling with illness continues on amazingly. Well done Trish, keep on singing. We all love you. You are an important part of the country music scene.

Guest artist for the day was Wayne Nuku, wow what a terrific entertainer. He has become so popular I reckon all of Adelaide has seen him. We have a return visit in August at our AGM.

Thanks to All.

Hope everyone had a great Easter.

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP April

Above:- Wayne NukuLeft:- Midnight Mountain Blue Leon Hall, Darrell Thompson, Trish and Barry Wilson and Bob Charman

It is nearly half way through the year.

For our May Club day the Heartland Band once again provided great country music. I believe they are still on top of the list of bands in Adelaide. I always enjoy their company.

They were kept busy with guest artists, firstly the winner of the Len Wakefield Memorial Award, Georgette Berry from Berri. She is a lovely young lady and performed very well. She puts a lot of time into her work. She has great support from her family, this is so important for the young ones, going it alone is hard. Georgette was pleased with the award helping her to purchase equipment to use at her performances.

Our guest Brendon Liley from New Zealand is now living in Adelaide with his father Steve Liley (who is a member

of Kindred Spirit). Wow! What a wonderful young man with a great voice. We hope to see him later on this year and also his father Steve.

Heartland have a duo of young ladies with them usually, Sugar and Spice. We didn’t have Spice on the day, but Sugar sang. What a lovely young lady with a lovely voice. I hope to see both of them next time.

At the last minute, on holidays from Victoria was Mick Tenace. Time was running out so there was only time for one song. Hopefully there will be more time for more of his songs at a later date.

Thanks to all for a great day.

Hope all Mothers had a good day

Lorraine

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP May

On a sadder note, I lost my dear Mother-in-law, Myra Smith on the 3rd of May after a long illness. I have often spoken of her. She was a member of our club for nearly 10 years and loved her club and her country music.

Bye for now

Thank God for Country Music

Di Smith (Pres)

Ps Make your words sweet and tender today, for you may have to eat them tomorrow!

From a field of four finalists, Sharon Smith gave a strong bush ballad performance to take out the Star Quest honour. Hailing from Oakey in Queensland, Sharon has been involved with bush ballad music for many years with much experience as a bass player for numerous artists and touring. The Star Quest award was presented to Sharon by Joy McKean. from Virginia Coad back in February 2009.

On the bush balladeer’s web site are a few more words, but the bio is “under construction’.

http://www.bushballadeers.com.au/sharonsmith.htm is the site.

On the above page ‘Product (not available)’ is displayed, but a 12 track CD was forecast . “My next bit of excitement will be my CD launch, I’m hoping to get my album finished around April. There will be 12 tracks, 6 new and 6 covers, the title track was written by Keith Jamieson – “The Road Of Life”, it’s a great song, thanks Jammo”

Leafy Sea Dragon and Top of Gulf FestivalsAlthough the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival at Yankalilla was not very well attended for the talent quest nor evening entertainment, all who appeared had a good time. Claire Turner took out the Junior Competition and our Georgette Berry the Open Female section. John Turner took out the Open Male. In the evening Bernie and the Bandits and Bill Bedford and band were in the hall while the Cowtippers and a number of other groups played in the BankSA marquee. There were many entrants in the Top of Gulf Festival talent quests. Angela Easson took out the open gospel and Open Female sections, Justin Freschi the Open Male

section. Our Georgette Berry was the Junior Entertainer of the year with John Turner the Senior Entertainer of the year. Angela was also at the Leafy Sea Dragon Festival coming in second in the Open Female section. She was the 1998 SACCM Junior Champion of Champions. Great to see her back.Lee Forster and his band provided entertainment on Saturday evening and Sunday. Fully Loaded was the backing band for the contestants all weekend.Congratulations to the committee of the Port Augusta and Districts Country Music Club for a great weekendFull results and pictures on www.saccm.com.

Would members also please try and keep pie and pastie crumbs off the floor, they are very difficult to clean up!
