Hi Everyone

Well it won’t be long and our AGM will be upon us. HAVE YOU HAD A THINK ABOUT BEING A COMMITTEE MEMBER? It really would be good to have more men on the committee, but ladies of course are more than welcome. Being a committee member is really not a hard job when we all pitch in and help. I’ve been on the committee since 1990, so there must be something good about it, c’mon, I challenge you to have a go and have your say at running the club.

Speaking of pitching in and helping, we really do appreciate the help from everyone who helps in the kitchen, the setting up at the beginning of the day and especially at the end of the day when we’re all tired and dying to go home. Thank you so much.

Almost forgot, a big thanks to Bev who helps Raels with the membership work.

April 2008 Entertainment ReportWow, what a day we had thanks to Robert Sexton having a 60th birthday. He sponsored the artists, his selection was great.

The band of John Mathewson was very entertaining, they came over from Victoria. They are always popular at the Mildura Festival. John had been on the sick list shortly before coming over but did an excellent show with his deep voice. Our members seemed to like his Johnny Cash songs.

What can one say about Camille Tehu and Stuie French? I believe they are the best duo going around, great singers and musicians, lovely personalities and very friendly and willing to please everyone. Add our very own Trev Warner and the result was a great sound. Thanks to all and a special thanks to Robert Sexton. I wonder what he might come up with on his 70th?

May 2008 Entertainment ReportHere we are nearly halfway through the year. The band of the month Us Blokes, a new group from Gawler was very good, had lots of good reports. Well done to them.

It was a good walk-up day. Young Eliza is getting very good. She has been going to the Gawler Workshops, so we could see the improvement from her last appearance at our club.

Committee girls, Helen Whelan and Raels did a wonderful performance each.

Ever popular Steve Liley and Steve Tripodi always please the crowd. It is good to have these performers. Special walk-up from the central NSW coast, Twyce Daily (really his stage name) also gave a very good performance. He is a singer, guitarist and songwriter originally from Wales. He was well received, hope to see him again at the club.

The band comprises a full complement of talented and experienced singers and musicians. They are all well known throughout South Australia and have also taken their unique style of music interstate. Their common bond is their love of music and genuine respect for each other. They are a group of fun-loving musicians who are devoted to quality country music and to their many followers.Country Plus comprises:BOB BASELY - Lead Vocals/Rhythm GuitarBob has been involved in the country music scene for about 20 years, playing in various bands in Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge and Adelaide. He has also done extensive Solo and Duo work. Bob has won a number of awards at the Barmera and Pt. Pirie Country Music Festivals. Bob has played with, and been with support bands for such artists as Beccy Cole, Jimmy Little and John Williamson to name a few.DAVE WATTS - Lead Guitar/ Harmony VocalsFrom Templars, Dave has supported many top Artists in England, France and Australia. His versatility provides Heartland with the unique ability to showcase a variety of lead instruments. He has played in a number of bands such as Both Barrels, Buckshot and is a regular participant in The South Australian Council of Country Music Showcase band.

Darryl Eckert:-Bass/rhythm/lead guitars, harmonies and vocals, Darryl began his music career in old time bands before developing an interest in country music. He is an experienced guitarist having appeared with such bands as The Premiers.

RACHEL RICHARDS - our special July Guest Artist

Part of her winning the 2008 Bush Balladeer Star Quest is her appearing around Australia. We have been very fortunate through the years in having the winning Balladeer at one of our regular ameetings. This year our guest is Rachel Richards.

Rachel is 32, married to Dave and is the proud mummy to two gorgeous boys, Jackson 21 months and Kyan 6 months. Rachel spent the first 21 years of her life in Mount Gambier SA, and 10 years ago Rachel began travelling around Australia on various construction jobs as a crane driver, working with her husband Dave. Rachel has called Brisbane her home for the past 7 years.

Music has always played a big part in Rachel’s life, (especially country music). From an early age she played the organ and keyboards, sang and performed for family and friends. As time progressed she turned her hand to the art of songwriting and began to play guitar.

Over the last 6 years Rachel has done exceptionally well on the Festival Circuit and has earned many singing and songwriting awards, some memorable wins being: Various TSA Awards, Overall Winner at West Moreton Country Music Festival, Overall Winner at Gold Coast Festival and winner of the Stan Coster Perpetual Trophy at the Broxburn Bash, for Best Bush Balladeer.

Rachel was introduced to the world of the bush ballad about 5 years ago by her good mate Bazza Salkeld and instantly she felt a connection to the music and its Australian stories

and found it was clearly her ‘natural’ style and what she was meant to do. She is very dedicated to pursuing a career in Australia as a balladeer, mostly to preserve this important tradition. Rachel feels a sense of pride and patriotism in ensuring that this style does not disappear, because she’s proud to be Australian. Rachel loves to write and perform these great stories to a captivated crowd.

Rachel has just completed her debut album with talented producer Lindsay Waddington of Krosskut Records with the title track I’m a Country Girl, (In a Bush Ballad World) written by the legendary Keith Jamieson, Rachel’s rendition of Slim’s When The Rain Tumbles Down In July, a couple of Coster classics in Old Gilbert and the beautiful Bushman’s Song, and seven Rachel Richard’s originals, including award winning songs Weeping Willows and The Drover.

In 2007 Rachel was a Grand Finalist in the Bush Balladeers Star Quest and in 2008 has taken out the title as ABBA Bush Ballad Star Quest Winner. She was presented a beautiful handmade clock made from rare gidgee wood and silky oak and made from an old stirrup iron. It was presented by Slim Dusty’s wife and legendary singer songwriter Joy McKean.

During the 12 months as ABBA ambassador Rachel will have a single released to NFS, played nationally and will attend many festivals across Australia including, The Gympie Muster, Galston, Mildura, Barham, and Barmera, Blacktown.

Dave Schache:- Drums. - Dave also began his musical career playing in old time dance bands which is where he met Kevin and Darryl. He is an accomplished percussionist and drives the beat enthusiastically.

Rock the Mount and Remarkable Ute Muster 2008This year’s event was attended by even more than last year.

Friday’s program included ‘Main Street Excitement’, included lots of stalls (food and products), buskers on the back of a truck, live entertainment ‘Bundy Night’ @ the North Star Hotel.

The live entertainment was outside this year and included, Tracey Rains and Claypan, John O’Dea, Penny Burke, Jane, Gary Burrows, Gary Mannion, Noel and Molly Kneebone and a number of young up and coming artists that John O’Dea has assisted through the years. These included Lisa Kuerschiner, Brianna Speath, Caitlin Randall, and Jaz Reschke. It was a cool evening but a fire and some gas heaters helped warm those outside. A free bus shuttle ran continuously between the showgrounds and Melrose. A good evening was enjoyed by all.

On Saturday there was a Ute Muster, afternoon entertainment from noon and of course the main concert from 4pm. Many of the artists who performed at the North Star Hotel appeared again on Saturday afternoon including John O’Dea, Gary Burrows, Tracey Rains and Claypan, Penny Burke, Gary Mannion, Jaz Reschke, Shane Carmody, Tracey Rains and her brother Nathaniel O’Brien did a couple of beautiful duets and last but not least Danny Hooper. Many were entertained seated in front of the stage next to the main stage. Gary Burrows, who usually leads The Rustlers, sounded great on his own and with Claypan on the weekend. All the others were good too.

Gary Mannion has just released his first CD, ‘Ballads and Dreams’. It was available at the Top of the Gulf Festival in Port Augusta April 24 to April 27 or from Gary.

The main concert started right on time at 4pm. The order of the artists was, Dianna Corcoran, James Blundell, the McClymont sisters, the Songbirds (Beccy Cole, Gina Jeffreys & Sara Storer), Lee Kernaghan ‘2008 Australian of the Year’ and Shea Fisher. As time went on the sound level seem to rise! I found the sound much too loud and “bassy”. Even Noel Kneebone commented that the mix was not good. I, and some others, found it difficult to understand the lyrics of most of the artists over the thumping bass, guitars and drums. It has been suggested

that “if it is too loud, you are too old”, but I would still like to be able to understand the vocals! There was some compensation, the girls all looked wonderful! The large screen helped all to see what was going on on the stage. The screen changed between three camera feeds, one on a platform behind the sound consoles, one on stage and one just in front of the stage. The camera operators varied their subjects, panning and zooming, even showing the audience many times. The quality of the big screen display was o.k. as long as one was not too close to it! It was a welcome addition this year.

I suppose the event was ‘Rock the Mount’ so one should expect it to be a bit rocky! Some of the music certainly did not sound very country to me!

The standing audience got denser at the stage as the program progressed. It was very difficult to get close to take pictures, unless one stayed at the front all the time!

All the main artists, except for Lee Kernaghan, signed anything put in front of them at the product tables!

The venue was much better set up this year. Last year it was next to impossible to move with the space provided being totally insufficient for the numbers attending. This year there was room to move around, the stage was positioned much further from the football club rooms. The food stalls had long lines all evening. The numbers attending were up on last year, the official count being from three to four thousand! (as reported on ABC radio Sunday morning in an interview with one of the organizers, Sue). Campers were spread around most of the showgrounds. There were hundreds of tents, campervans, buses, caravans etc.

The weather was very kind, not too hot, not too cold and unlike last year no rain. The country side could certainly use some rain, but fortunately there was none on the weekend.

This year was their 25th Celebration of Country Music in Port Pirie. Many of the original artists who appeared years ago appeared this year. The free program (thanks to the many sponsors especially Nystar) was full of information including, pictures, list of artists who have entertained during the past 25 years, profiles on many of this year’s artists etc.

There were days of workshops at the start. Gary Burrows from APRA and many others were involved in these.

The first event I attended was the Adam Brand & Beccy Cole ‘Live in Concert’ in the Keith Michell Theatre. It was a wonderful evening. Somehow I managed to get a seat in row C, so could take pictures from my seat without having to move! The mist/smoke machines made flash pictures look terrible, so I had to take pictures with my new camera without using the flash. Fortunately using high sensitivity settings and when there was not too much movement on the stage many of the pictures turned out well. The ‘mist’ in coloured spot lights was quite a sight. The concert started off with a Rob Black solo set. He attended the Queensland Conservatorium of Music at 17. Rob’s big break came earlier this year when he entered the Toyota Starmaker competition. Although he did not win (our Talia Wittmann did!) he was shortly later signed

up with Compass Bros. He also played in Adam Brand’s Band. As usual Beccy put on a very entertaining set. I had not seen Adam Brand live before. It was good. Adam and Beccy also did a few songs together. After the show they sold their wares, signed anything put in front of them and when asked posed for pictures with fans.

There is not enough space here to cover in detail everything that happened at Port Pirie, unusually for me, I took hundreds of pictures so will be able to relive the time for years to come.

Some of the highlights include:- Buskers, Bill Bedford Concert (Dianne Lindsay and Peter Simpson were unable to attend), Golden Oldies Concert, Anniversary Reunion Concert featuring Deniese Morrison, Aubrey & Martin, The Miller Band, Colin Kerley, Donna Starr. In the 80s Donna was a winner in one of the junior talent contests (this year her daughter, Madison Paynter was third in the Junior 10 years and under section!), The Sherrah Family Concert, Nystar Awards Presentation Night, Bush Poets Breakfast, Gospel Show, NCMA Roundup and the NCMA Finale.

There were many other events at the hotels, Harness Racing Track and other places that I was unable to attend!

Southern Flinders Live Music Festival 14th – 18th May 2008 in Port Pirie

Top of the Gulf Country Music Festival 2008 - April 24 – 27A great weekend was had at Port Augusta. I missed the Marie Hodson session on the Thursday night but I understand it went very well.Friday night at the Football Club had the Lee Forster band plus a wonderful whip cracking demonstration from Wayne Campbell. Marie Hodson also had a great walk up session.The weather was not co-operative on Saturday with many showers. There was a very large number of entrants in the talent quest. The talent was amazingly good. Full results are in the SACCM Prelude and website (including pictures), but briefly the Open Female section was won by Kristal Collins, Open Male by Wilber Klein, Open Gospel by David Crombie, Open Group by The Texettes (two of which also won the Open Duet section!). Young Bowden Blane was very impressive on drums.The evening show at the oval, after a short spell because of rain, was moved inside to Cooinda Hall. Before the move, locals Gary Mannion and Wilbur Klein entertained

the smallish audience. Local band ‘Fine Form’ worked tirelessly during the weekend, backing the previous artists, the talent quest and also the Sunday talent search. The Wolverines started off at the oval, but had to restart in the hall later.There was a long wait to get in the hall, but the inside entertainment made it worthwhile. Unfortunately the allowed entry numbers were limited to 250, so many missed out. Troy Cassar-Daley, with his lead guitarist, came outside the hall and briefly mingled with the waiting crowd singing a few tunes. How many artists would do that! When the proceedings started the Wolverines, Troy and the Lee Forster band gave a superb show.Because of the cold wet weather the Sunday Talent Search was also held inside. Open Entertainer of the Year was young 16 year old Justin Freschi from Onkaparinga Hills, Junior Entertainer of the Year Nathaniel O’Brien.It was a great weekend, I should have gone up there for their festival years ago! Lorna Molloy had a surprise 80th birthday party on April 12th at the Elizabeth RSL. Many ACMC members were present. Our immediate past president John Turner and Joslyne made a special trip down from Mt Isa for Lorna’s

birthday celebrations. John was put to work on stage with Bernie and the Bandits! (see the picture on page 7) Fred and Joy Champion were among the many who had a great evening.
