KBIS BRITISH EQUESTRIAN NATIONAL CONVENTIONwith Jean Bemelmans20

BRITISH DRESSAGESTONELEIGH PARK, KENILWORTHWARWICKSHIRE, CV8 2RJ

Jean BemelmansThe world famous Jean Bemelmans was born in Hasselt, Belgium in 1949.

His dressage career began at the age of 17 when he moved to Germany and was lucky enough to find work with ‘Reitmeister’ Robert Schmidtke in his large stable of grand prix horses at Hilden.

Schmidtke, along with fellow luminaries Bubbi Gunter and Willi Schultesis learnt their skills in the German cavalry school of Hanover, one of the world’s most respected equestrian institutes whose traditions and practices helped to shape dressage as we know it today.

Bemelmans trained at Hilden for five years where he gained an excellent grounding in classical dressage before setting up to become an instructor in his own right. “From there I got the basic knowledge but in the end I made my own experience” Jean states “you have to make mistakes to learn.”

In 1984 Bemelmans became a German citizen and in 1989 was honoured with the title ‘Reitmeister’ himself, an accolade given to riders who have successfully trained 50 or more horses up to International Grand Prix level. He now runs his own yard in the German Rheinland and trains many international grand prix riders.

Much of Jean’s time is devoted to his position as National Trainer for the Spanish Team. Over the past 15 years he has been responsible for their rise to victory, coaching them to team silver at the 2002 World Championships, the 2003 European Championships and the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Jean Bemelmans is a rider and trainer with true heart and soul for what he does. He is universally respected and is regularly asked to demonstrate his training methods at events around the world.

Although educated in the classical German way Bemelmans trains with an open mind, always taking into consideration the needs and character of the horse to develop him as a happy athlete.
