« Adding Value to non-food uses of mango by products in West Africa »
AGENDA CHALLENGES
WHAT HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR?
WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?
CHALLENGES
FIT with PAEPARD2 aims:
Partnerships oriented by the demand of the Research users
CONTRIBUTE to fighting fruit flies in West Africa through generating value from daily harvesting of fallen fruit by small producers.
DEMONSTRATE positive impact and ATTRACTING donors attention to fund research proposals
WHAT HAS BEEN DONE SO FAR ?
ULP New brokerage mecanism : December 2011: non-research partners proposed a bottom up
approach led led by users of Research results. Step 1 - Definition of the federating theme (Jan-Sept. 2012) Step 2 - Desk Reviews (August-Dec 2012) Step 3 - Training of Agricultural Innovation Facilitator (Nov 2012) Step 4 - Regional Multistakeholder workshop (Senegal-March 2013)
Step 5 - Concept Notes (Core group)
Step 6 - Identification of funding sources Step 7 - Development of full research proposals
The mango federating theme
A large Consultation process (growers, exporters,
processors, research institutes…)
The WA mango industry confronted to high crop losses due to
fruit fly infestation
A phytosanitary problem to be solved
Incentive to be given to small producers for harvesting fallen
fruit
Strong socio-economic impacts
Revenues to be generated along the value chain.
3 National Desk Reviews• Period: August >>>December 2012
• Countries: Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal
• Objectives : Check validity of the federating theme through
interviews of public and non public operators
Identification of existing or planned initiatives on processing mango waste for mango non-food uses; lessons to be learnt from other agricultural sectors (soja, shea)
Local Initiatives
THEMES BURKINA FASO
COTE D’IVOIRE
SENEGAL
COMPOST/ FERTILISATION
ENERGY: ‘’briquettes’’ /biogas DAFANI / PAFASP / GEBANA /SNV
I2T
ANIMAL FEED GEBANA / INERA
VERGERS DU NORD
COSMETIC: Butter/oil BURKINATURE/ MILOGO
PICOS CI BIOESSENCE / BAOBAB DES SAVEURS
CONSTRAINTS
• Ecological (short mango seasonality and limited agro-ecology diversity)
• Institutional (limited experience and capacity by public institutions and growers’ organisation)
• Socio-economic: limited market prospects, road infrastructures to be improved
• Technical: difficulty to process methane into liquid, lack of know-how on small scale oil extraction
• Find partners
- COLEACP Regional Workshop in Senegal (March 2013) identified 2 main Research questions around:
• Adding value to Mangoes in the Cosmetic industry• Sustainable non-food processing of mangoes for use by
family farmers and village communities (biogas,
compost, animal feeding, “briquettes” for fire)
- 2 « Core » multistakeholder groups write Concept notes on each Research question (March/July 2013)
- Funding sources to be identified for submission of complete Research proposals (July-Nov.2013)
Concept Notes
1. International market orientation: Cosmetic:
- Mango butter + pulp (anti-oxydant fatty acid )
2. Sustainable development of local small scale companies
oriented:
Energy:
- ’’Briquettes’’ from mango seed
- Biogas• Compost (improving soil fertility …..)
• Animal feed (pulp and peel)
Concept Notes
Operators involved:
- Growers, exporters, processors, NGO, Associations,
Research institutions, local donors
Impacts:
- Access to an alternative energy, increasing volume of
animal feeding availability, improving the soil fertility.
- Development of local production of mango butter, new
export outlets (EU…), improving employment for women
and young people in rural areas, bring new revenues for
growers.
What about the future?
Research proposals (RP) matching donors’ requirements and research users’ expectations.
Sustainability of the ULP
AIF role
How can PAEPARD further support RP?
Y4E / Competitive Research Fund and an Incitation Fund
