“Words cannot express my gratitude and the relief this scholarship will provide for me. Thank you for your generosity and support enabling me to keep moving forward.”

Adamaris Greenville Technical College Student and Scholarship Recipient

“I have enjoyed being involved with the Foundation. Producing graduates who can come out immediately

and contribute – that’s a big deal.”

Thank you for the investment you have made in our community in 2019 through your gift to the Greenville Tech Foundation. It was an exceptional year, and we appreciate your partnership in creating the success stories included on these pages.

With your help, we provided over $40,000 in funds for 87 students with emergency needs, including utility cut-off notices, evictions, unexpected car repairs, and other expenses. By eliminating barriers that can cause students to drop out of school, we enable them to move forward. We were also able to award $357,830 in scholarships to 400 students - money that makes all the difference in our students’ lives.

Corporations and foundations contributed $580,000 in grants to support our students and programs. Our faculty and staff raised almost $60,000 in support of our efforts; and once again, our leaders exceeded the fundraising goal for the board campaign with 100% participation.

Funding from multiple donors and foundations has made a new African American Male Scholars Initiative (AAMSI) possible, addressing the disproportionate number of African American males who were enrolling at Greenville Technical College and dropping out. We have welcomed 100 students to the inaugural class. They are assigned to an academic coordinator who provides intensive academic advising and weekly monitoring. Wrap-around services assist with medical needs, family issues, financial advising, cultural activities, counseling, and more.

Our office will relocate this summer to the new Center for Culinary and Hospitality Innovation (CHI) at 556 Perry Ave. The Greenville Tech Foundation raised over $2 million for this initiative to meet workforce needs within the growing hospitality industry while bringing opportunity and pathways for economic mobility to the citizens of West Greenville. We look forward to exciting new success stories as we join forces with you to help the college meet its mission of transforming lives while building an educated workforce.

The 2019 Workforce Development Salute honored Dodie Anderson, Jolley Foundation and Lockheed Martin for support that provides pathways for economic opportunity and upward mobility for students and their families. Together, these honorees have funded programs that benefit more than 3,000 students annually and have contributed more than $3.5 million to the Greenville Tech Foundation.

“The difference our donors make cannot be overstated. This year, we honored a graduate who is paying it forward, a foundation that provides scholarships,

equipment, and emergency funds, and a company that is helping us create the aerospace industry’s future workforce. We are grateful to Dodie Anderson,

Jolley Foundation, and Lockheed Martin along with all the companies, individuals, and organizations that support our students.”

“When you find other people who are in that same situation, it’s so encouraging. We are

learning not just from people who want to help, but from people who say,

‘I’ve been there before.’”

In high school, Dodie Anderson was told she shouldn’t go to college. After raising her family, Dodie enrolled at Greenville Technical College as an adult. In her first class, she found support from a history instructor, Dr. Norm Raiford, who built her confidence and showed her that she belonged on a college campus after all; that she could achieve; and that she could set her sights even higher. Dodie has given back to the College and our students through endowed scholarships as well as funding for the Dreisbach/Anderson Student Success Center that will open by the end of 2020.

Stacey Wortman, a Surgical Technology student, is seeking a second career in the medical field after she encountered caring medical professionals while raising her children. Stacey has grown tremendously during her Greenville Technical College education which she feels was only possible through a scholarship funded by Dodie Anderson. Dodie and Stacey had the opportunity to meet for pizza and share life experiences. Stacey says, “Dodie is a woman who has never let herself be defeated or let someone tell her she couldn’t do something. She was told she would never be smart enough to attend college, but after raising her children, she went on to get her college degree. She is an inspiration to me and her determination has been a great encouragement to work hard in my program. It was enjoyable to connect on many similarities in our lives.”

Bosch Rexroth Endowed Scholarship Recipient

“My scholarship award means everything to me and my young family. It enables me

to continue to pursue my goal of achieving a career in Advanced Manufacturing

or Engineering Technology.”

Devarus Hall, an Architectural Engineering Technology student, faced financial challenges after transitioning from a part-time job to an internship in his field, taking “a big pay cut.” Students and teachers noticed he was struggling and helped connect him to GTC resources, like food and basic supplies from the Caring Corner and assistance paying a utility bill from the Foundation’s Student Emergency Needs program. Planning to transfer to Clemson University to prepare for a career as an architect, Devarus hopes to give back to GTC and help others.

Devarus is also a participant in the inaugural cohort of the African American Male Scholars Initiative (AAMSI). AAMSI has introduced Devarus to community leaders of color who have experienced similar challenges. He says these encounters sometimes give him actual goosebumps.

Donor and Greenville Technical College Alumna

“It is important to me to help students know that they can achieve anything they wish with the right help. In the Dreisbach/Anderson Student Success Center, they will receive what I did - support that will allow them to believe in themselves, to achieve their goals, and to continue to set the bar higher. My goal is to pay it forward and to honor those who achieved alongside me as well as those who made it possible.”

Tom Vasavong, an Electronics Engineering student, received the Bosch Rexroth Endowed Scholarship through the Greenville Tech Foundation. With more than 40 students considered, Tom’s determination to complete his degree stood out along with his high GPA and dedication to his studies. He’s been at Greenville Technical College since 2009, taking as many credits as he could while working 20-30 hours per week and spending time with his wife and daughter. Tom is set to graduate in May 2020.

This scholarship symbolizes Bosch Rexroth’s longstanding commitment, as a global leader in advanced manufacturing, to supporting the education and growth of individuals, strengthening communities and the industry. Bosch Rexroth has been one of Greenville Technical College’s strongest partners, helping the college gain support to move forward with innovative endeavors including the Center for Manufacturing Innovation and a bachelor’s degree in advanced manufacturing technology.

Center for Culinary and Hospitality InnovationWe’re moving! This summer, the Greenville Tech Foundation office will take up residence alongside Greenville Technical College’s new Center for Culinary and Hospitality Innovation (CHI) at 556 Perry Avenue in West Greenville. CHI is the anchor tenant of The Furman Company’s Poe West property and will work to meet workforce needs within Greenville’s growing restaurant and hospitality industry while providing opportunity and pathways for economic mobility to the citizens of West Greenville.

Dreisbach/Anderson Student Success CenterBy the end of 2020, Dodie Anderson’s $2 million gift will have helped create a new space where students can find the resources and services they need to enroll and succeed at Greenville Technical College. The Dreisbach/Anderson Student Success Center will house enrollment services including admissions and financial aid as well as other college partners who can ensure they have the resources needed to move forward, overcome barriers, and excel.

Benson Campus GreenLocated at the Benson Campus, the new “Campus Green” will include amphitheater seating, a covered stage, a paved plaza and a walking path to enhance student life and add a venue for community activities.

Elijah Robertson is currently pursuing an Associate Degree in Fine Arts with a Certificate in Graphic Design. Upon graduation from Greenville Technical College, he plans to transfer into a Bachelor of Fine Arts program to study animation with a focus in three-dimensional computer animation. Elijah currently takes commissions for short films and small animations, and contributed the artwork featured on this report’s cover.

Greenville Technical College’s Department of Visual Arts program is well respected in the arts community for education that allows graduates to go directly to work in areas such as advertising, web design, and professional photography or to move on to a four-year college with a strong portfolio and the skills to succeed.
