weighed-in 70 head of market beef for the 2019 Adair County Fair. Madison Suhr, Jennifer Holliday, Annie Herr, Sophie Dorsey, and Dax and Paisley Kintigh verified animals for the Iowa State Fair.
Thank you to each of our 4-H clubs for the many activities they participated in during the Holidays. You helped to make someone’s Holiday brighter and enjoyed the satisfaction of knowing your efforts were meaningful and appreciated. Activities included preparing and delivering cheer plates of cookies and candy to local residents and businesses to show appreciation, caroling to local residents, adopting a family, making blankets for hospital patients, participating in the lighted Christmas parade, decorating trees, and visiting local residents and care centers.
Richland Royals members and parents helped with January Clover Kids session.

Poster Contest The NACD Stewardship and Education Committee is pleased to announce the 2019 Poster Contest and Stewardship Week theme: “Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper.” Soil is a dirty topic, but everyone needs to learn more about it! Soil is the foundation for many of the items we use in our daily life, such as food, clothing, clean water, homes and more. Healthy soil equals healthy food, which equals a healthy you. Don’t treat your soil like dirt! Contact your local conservation district to help you care for your soil. There will be 45 state winners. Of those, the five first-place state winners will receive a $50 cash award and the remaining 40 winners will receive a $35 cash award thanks to the generous donation of Grinnell Mutual. The five first-place state winners will be on display at the 2019 CDI Annual Conference on August 18th-20th and then will be sent to the national poster contest for consideration for a national award and on display at the 2020 NACD Annual Meeting. 4-H Youth Conference
Every June, almost 900 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show! If you have a specific interest in animal science, you might want to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP track! There are also workshop tracks that span all 3 days for certain topics if you'd like to study something in more depth. Or, you can choose different workshops each day to get more variety while you're on campus. If you'd like to be part of the team to capture the Conference in photos, join our Iowa 4-H Youth Camera Corps, and bring your camera. We're doing things a little differently this year and you'll get to learn photo skills and put them to work through the workshop series. Please join us in June for the most incredible three days of your life at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference! Check here for continued updates regarding the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference. Regular registration for a fee of $180 closes on June 1 with late registration for $200 available until June 11. You can also check out financial aid applications, due April 25 to the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Hatting is new Extension Farm Management Specialist
Patrick Hatting has joined Iowa State University Extension and Outreach as a farm management specialist, working with farmers in southwest Iowa. An experienced financial adviser, manager and insurance agent, Hatting will be housed at the Iowa State University Armstrong Research Farm near Lewis and will work with producers in Pottawattamie, Cass, Adair, Mills, Montgomery, Adams, Union, Clarke, Fremont, Page, Taylor, Ringgold and Decatur counties.
Ag Decision Maker – Estimated Cost of Production Publication
Accurately estimating cost of crop production will be vital for farmers in 2019. With a market outlook in 2019 similar to 2018, farmers will face another year of marketing challenges. The first step toward knowing a profitable sales price is understanding input costs. The highest portion of the cost of production for corn following corn, corn following soybeans and herbicide tolerant soybeans is land, followed by ma-chinery, seed and fertilizer. A full breakdown of estimated costs of production is available through Ag Decision Maker or by accessing ISU Extension and Outreach publication FM 1712 “Estimated Costs of Crop Production in Iowa.”

Clover Kids has been going great this year! We’ve
learned about building structures, shapes, friction,
pushing, and pulling, and we’ve even visited the Care
Center in Greenfield! We’ve been having lots of fun!
Our next workshop will be on February 2 from 10am-
11:30am. I have some great activities planned, and I
hope all the Clover Kids will enjoy them!
Workshops will be the first Saturday of every month
starting in October and ending in April. We will be
focusing on STEM this year, so members will have the
opportunity to explore and work on their creative
problem solving in a fun, inclusive environment.
