County 4-H program. Last year 472 youth participated in some aspect of the 4-H program in Adair County. Our club and independ-ent members totaled 170. Use National 4-H Week as an opportunity to promote the benefits of 4-H to others and recruit new members.

We need your help to keep our program strong and growing. Here are three easy steps to follow. First, re-enroll. Families are encouraged to re-enroll using 4honline. It’s quick and simple. Go to the following for the help sheet www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4honline-information-families-and-leaders Follow the instruc-tions carefully. The 4-H Booster Fund will pay $7.50 of each member’s program development fee for those who sign-up by October 31

st.

Families that are eligible for free or reduced lunches or have pressing financial issues are strongly encouraged to contact the Extension office and apply for a waiver of fees from the Iowa 4-H Foundation. All information is kept

strictly confidential. Please visit with Donna to complete the

simple application.

Independent 4-H Membership If your work, school, or church commitments keep you from being an active member of a 4-H club, please consider being an independent member. You are matched with a mentor and can still participate in project work, service projects, camps & conferences, competitive events, and county fair activities. There is a $30 fee to be an independ-ent member. If you are interested, give the Extension office a call for more details and to sign up.

New Member/Parent Meeting will be held Tuesday,

office. This meeting is for new members and their parents and current members and parents (1

Expectations, future dates, 4-H enrollment (4honline), hands-on activities, and a light meal are on the agenda. The meeting is planned to commemorate National 4-H Week and welcome 4-H’ers to the new year.

4-H AWARDS DAY The annual 4-H Awards Day has been set for Sunday, November 3

rd, 2 p.m. at the

Warren Cultural Center located on the east side of the square in Greenfield. Each club will be introduced. All members who com-complete a record book will be recognized. Plan to at-tend the event as a family. Cookie and punch reception host-ed by the Orient Bulldogs and Richland Royals will follow.

2013 DuPont Pioneer Grant Information

and Fall Applications Available!

DuPont Pioneer is offering Community Improvement Grants through the Iowa 4‑H Foundation. 4-H Clubs are encour-aged to apply for “seed money” to help get started on com-munity projects. The brochure, information, and application are on the web at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/pioneergrants. Grants awarded will range from a minimum of $50 to a maximum of $500. Requested funds should not be more than half the cost of the total project.

Club Checklist As a Club: Celebrating National 4-H Week (October 6

th – 12

your community.

Distribute county fair ribbon premium checks

Work on your membership recruitment plan. Each member invite a friend to be a part of your club. Make sure to think about home-schoolers.

Complete enrollment forms and medical forms using 4honline or complete paper forms and return to the Extension office. You will get a $7.50 discount for each re-enrollment turned in by October 31

st and new

enrollments submitted by December 31st.

Recognize retiring leaders, if you haven’t already done so.

Elect club officers and turn the list of officers in to the Extension office. Use the officer books provided by the Extension office. If your club needs a new Secretary or Treasurer book, contact the Extension office.

Create a club budget – Remember $30/member for Development Fee (There is a discount for turning in enrollments early). Clubs are also asked to support the county program by donating to the Silent Auction and buying a trophy.

Review or establish club guidelines and expectations; and develop a club program for the year. Turn in a copy to the Extension office and make sure every family gets a copy.

Encourage a parent or high school age youth to apply to be a member of the Youth Action Committee.

Plan to attend 4-H Awards Day on November 3rd

as a club. Be sure parents are invited, too.

2012-13 Program Fees Thank you to the Adair County Hot Shots, Harrison Hum-mers, NV Champions, Summit Super Stars, and Washington Stars for paying your 2012-13 program fees. If your club isn’t listed, please pay the program fee as soon as possible. Call the Extension office 743-8412 if you need a reminder of the amount due.

New Leader Screening The safety of our members is important to us. All 4-H leaders must have a background check before assuming their responsibilities. I’m waiting on details for the new screening process required by the State 4-H office. I will contact our new leaders when I have the information.

New 4-H Volunteer Training ISU Extension and 4-H staff will be providing training for new 4-H club/project volunteers on Saturday, January 18

th in

Greenfield. Trainings are scheduled 9:00 am – 3:30 pm. Volunteers will receive a notebook of resources to support their work with their club or group. Register at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/training-registration-new-volunteers-fall-2012-winter-2013

Community Service Opportunity

Book Drive for Blank Children’s Hospital

Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines is in need of approximately 10,000 books for children from toddler age to middle school. Children are welcome to take a book home

from their hospital or clinic visit. 4-H clubs are encouraged to participate in this important project. Groups donating funds

for 100 books or more will receive special recognition at Festival of Trees & Lights in Des Moines 11/25-12/1/13. This year the Adair County Extension Office asks that monetary donations be given for books to be purchased by Extension.

All contributions must be received by Oct. 11 so that book orders will be delivered in time. Books will be delivered to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines on November 1.

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PED) The National Pork Producers,

American Association of Swine Veterinarians and the Pork Checkoff have put together manure pumping protocols for commercial applicators, pork producers and landowners. Copies of the fact sheet s are available at the Adair County Extension Office.

The 2014 Annual Garden Calendar, “The Wonder of Trees” is now available at the Adair Coun-

ty Extension office for $6. The 12-month calendar celebrates the gift of trees and is filled with stunning photography, interesting facts and tips on planting and maintaining trees. The calendar also includes brief stories of historical or note-worthy trees throughout the United States. Featured trees include the Emancipation Oak, the Survivor Tree at the World Trade Center Memorial, the Delicious Apple Tree of Iowa and several others. Famous quotes regarding trees have been added to each month including those from Jefferson, Lincoln, Churchill and others. The calendar’s helpful tips are timely with the seasons, giving dates for pruning oak trees, hand thinning of fruit trees, checking for insects and many more. The last two pages of the calendar describe the proper way to plant a tree and gives facts about the state forests of Iowa and their location in the state.

Nina has resigned from this position to work as a Counselor with Zion Recovery Services in Greenfield. You will still see Nina on Fridays as she will be at the front desk as the Extension Office works through this transition.

I would also like to thank this year’s AmeriCorps members – Christine Rubio, Brad Baudler, Jennie Stamper, Gina Wal-lace, and Kelsie Cass. Thanks to this group of people, there were wonderful opportunities for our youth through summer programs and the Clover Kids program and more. The Ameri-Corps year ends September 30

th, and we wish these mem-

Kelsie is graduating from Northwest Missouri State University this December with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with an endorsement in Reading and Social Studies. She brings a vast knowledge with her education and years of past experience working with youth at Adair County Extension. I am excited to have Kelsie work with us through this transition period.

The Beef Checkoff Program is mandatory and requires that any time there is a change of ownership of a bovine animal, $1-per-head must be remitted to the Iowa Beef Industry Council. The beef checkoff applies to ALL bovine animals, including but not limited to, breeding stock, dairy animals and club calves (including new 4-H projects). Hunter Safety Training Course -

Adair County Conservation Board is offering Hunter Safety Training Course, open to youth who are at least 12 years of age. First session is Wednesday, October 16, 6:00-9:30 pm at Greenfield City Hall/Library meeting room. Second session is Saturday, October 20, 9:00 am-5:00 pm at Mormon Trail Park. Attendees are required to attend both sessions.

Pre-registration is needed. Be prepared to give your full name, date of birth, address, phone, social security number, gender, eye and hair color. For more info, contact Adair County Conservation at 641-743-6450.

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin

pie spice

1 1/2 cups nonfat milk

1 package (1 ounce) instant sugar free vanilla

pudding

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Wash hands.

2. In a large mixing bowl, mix pumpkin and cinnamon

together with a wooden spoon.

3. Slowly stir in milk and mix well.

4. Add instant pudding mix and stir slowly for about

one minute until it thickens.

5. Refrigerate until serving time. Serving size = 1/2 cup. Recipe makes 8 servings. Only 45 calories per serving. Fat and cholesterol is 0g. Protein 3g. Sodium 170mg.
