REGISTRATION DEADLINES ARE RAPIDLY APPROACHING FOR THE FOLLOWING

SUMMER CAMPING OPPORTUNITIES

2016 West Field 4-H 5th & 6th Grade Jr. Camp (former Area 4-H 5th & 6th Grade Jr. Camp held at the State 4-H Camping Center in Madrid) is open to youth who have completed 5th and 6th grade. West Field Jr. Camp will be held June 12 – 15 at the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Camping Center, near Gretna, NE 30 minutes west of Omaha. The camping center has bathrooms in the cabins, a zip line course, a huge water slide, swimming in a lake and a challenging high and low ropes team building course along with a wonderful group of teen camp counselors. Go to the following for complete details http://www.extension.iastate.edu/harrison/news/2016-west-field-4-h-5th-6th-grade-jr-camp Cost of the 4-day camp is $185. Adair County 4-H’ers are eligible for a $92.50 rebate. Camp registrations are due to the Harrison County Extension office by May 20.

Taste of Camp will be held at the State 4-H Camping

Center in Madrid. Youth entering grades 5-8 may attend “Full Camp” on Wednesday, June 22 at 4 pm through Saturday, June 25 at 11 am. Youth entering grades 1-4 may attend “Mini Camp” on Friday, June 24 from 8 am to Saturday, June 25 at 11 am. Camp activities will include archery, building a camp-fire, exploring a marsh, performing skits, singing camp songs, taking nature hikes, and making many new friends. Family members are invited to attend the closing ceremony and camp-fire lunch on Saturday, June 25 at 11:30 am. Cost is based on a three-tier system, allowing families to pick the level of price that is comfortable and affordable. Prices are the following:

Mini Camp – Tier 1: $105, Tier 2: $120, or Tier 3: $140;

Full Camp - Tier 1: $253, Tier 2: $260, or Tier 3: $285.

Adair County 4-H’ers are eligible for a $130 rebate for “Full Camp”, and a $60 rebate for “Mini Camp”. Adair County 4-H’ers are eligible for a reimbursement of 50% of the registration fee providing they write a thank-you note within 30 days of the event to the Youth Action Committee. You don’t have to be a 4-H’er to attend either of these camps. Invite a friend and enjoy camp together. All youth are welcome to attend.

State Fair Volunteers & Staff

NEEDED

Youth and adult volunteers are needed for the Iowa State Fair 4-H exhibit building and livestock departments. Applications are due July 10th. Applications for 4-H Exhibit Building youth and adult paid staff positions are due June 15th. Applications for live-stock youth and adult paid staff positions are due July 1st.

4-H County Fair Kick-Off on July 14th

Adair County Youth Action Committee and Extension Council will be hosting the 4-H County Fair Kick-Off on Thursday, July 14th in the 4-H/FFA Center at the Adair County Fairgrounds in Greenfield. Meal will be served from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

We are encouraging 4-H clubs to organize children’s games and activities for the evening entertainment. Email [email protected] with your club plans. Communication Share the Fun participants will perform at 6 pm. Pie in the Face (Youth Council fundraiser) dele-gates will be introduced. Adair County Fair King and Queen candi-dates will be introduced at 7 pm.

4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign

“You Grow 4-H” is the 2016 4-H’ers for 4-H campaign theme sponsored by the State 4-H Council. Adair County 4-H’ers Shelby Soper and Hank Bohling are members of the current State 4-H Council. Contributions raised through this campaign –

Provide financial assistance to help 4-H’ers attend 4-H camp or conference.

Help members from low-income families with payment of their

annual 4-H program fee.

Fund speakers and entertainment for the State 4-H Youth

Conference to keep registration fees affordable for all.

Improve the Iowa 4-H Camping Center with new equipment to enhance the camping experience.

Clubs are encouraged to donate $3 per member. Checks should be made payable to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Contributions are due to the Extension office by May 16th.

CLUB CHECKLIST As a Club:

Check your membership list closely. Remember you have until

May 15 to re-enroll or enroll new members.

Review summer opportunities for members: camps, 4-H confer-

ence, and state fair volunteers. Decide how and if your club will support participants from your club with small scholarships.

Update 4-H Participation Summaries for record book and

community service hours.

Identify an item or package your club would like to give to the

4-H Booster Fund silent auction to be held at the county fair. Homemade or constructed items are welcome.

“Dive to New Depths” is the theme for the 4-H/FFA Center.

Start making plans for your club booth.

√ Decide if and how your club can contribute to the July 14th

4-H County Fair Kick-Off sponsored by Extension and 4-H. Event will be held at the 4-H/FFA Center. Kids’ games, easy working exhibits, face painting are some ideas to consider.

√ Consider a group outing. Adventureland has group rate of

$25.00/person available April 30– June 10. (Minimum purchase of 15 tickets for the same day.) For details, go to www.adventurelandpark.com/group/.

√ Call Amanda at Greenfield Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center

(743-6131) to make arrangements to present your Pride of Iowa entry, working exhibit, educational presentation, or Share the Fun entry to the residents. Activities are scheduled for 10 am and 2 pm.

Members in Action

Harrison Hummers completed their spring ditch cleaning

project. Good job!

Summit Super Stars members and parents were joined by

Guthrie County Grant Sky Eagles members and parents in cleaning an elderly Adair resident’s yard. Excellent service project!

Twenty-four 4-H/FFA members tagged 162 pigs making these

pigs eligible to show at the 2016 Adair County Fair. Twenty-eight of the pigs tagged were also entered in the Lean Value Carcass Contest sponsored by the Adair County Pork Producers. Sara Beane and Beau and Reagan Weinheimer verified pigs for the state fair 4-H swine Show.

Congratulations to Carter Goetz for earning 2nd place in an

essay contest sponsored by Sweet Stuff Acres & Rabbitry of Thornville Ohio. He answered 9 questions in his essay pertaining to the rabbit project area and his goal in the project. Carter will receive a Crème D’Argent buck and a 1-year membership in the Crème D’Argent Federation.

Purchase a great new outfit at a garage sale or consignment shop to model in the $15 Challenge. Make sure to keep the receipt.

Capture a photo of your favorite subject with your camera.

Capture a second or third photo to enter in open class at the county fair. Entry is Thursday, July 21, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm in the Floral Hall on the fairgrounds.

Bake two of your 4-H Food & Nutrition entries and enter one of the items in the open class.

Appoint several club members to complete a write-up including photos of your club’s latest service project(s). Enter it as a club exhibit in the citizenship category.

Create a recipe book featuring your family’s favorite. Make sure to identify who provided each recipe.

Learn more about the diseases you vaccinate your animals against. Select one and create a poster about the disease and prevention techniques for the vet science class.

Organize a club Share the Fun Act. The top club act at the fair will receive $25 award in honor of Deb Stalter.

The Best of the Southwest Shootout will be held Saturday, July 30th at Westfair. This is an invitation only event for the following coun-ties: Adair, Adams, Cass, East Pottawattamie, Fremont, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Taylor, Union and West Pottawattamie.

In each of these counties the following Grand Champions will be invited:

Breeding Heifer

Breeding Doe

Breeding Ewe

Breeding Gilt

Market Beef

Market Goat

Market Lamb

Market Hog

If the Champion chooses not to participate, the Reserve will be invited. If the reserve declines that county will not be represented in that species area.

Only the exhibitor who exhibits that champion animal at the county fair can exhibit the same animal at this event (no substitute show-man/animals).

Empowering Adair County Foundation Announced

March 2016 Grant Awards Empowering Adair County Foundation was pleased to award $27,038.97 to six projects in

Adair County:

ISU Extension and Outreach: L.I.F.E. – Living well through Intergenerational Fitness and Exercise promotions and incentives ($850)

Greenfield Chamber/Main Street: Sidey Collection “Bonds” Series and Travelling Art Show ($8,188.97)

Community Development Corporation of Greenfield: Community Welcome Signs ($6,500)

Casey Walnut Thompson Fire Department: 10 Sets of Bunker gear ($9,500)

Nodaway Valley Booster Club-Elementary School Committee: Spring Into Summer Reading Initiative ($1,500)

Hill of Zion Union Township Park: Hill of Zion Union Township Park & Union Township Pioneer Cemeteries ($500) With these six grant awards, $86,588.97 was given in grants within Adair County this year. Funding for this grant program comes from the State of Iowa gambling revenues. A portion of these are allocated to counties that do not have a gaming operation within their borders. The funds are used for an annual granting program, to build an endowment and for administrative purposes. Bucket/Bottle Calves must be identified with a special

4-H ear tag available at the Extension office. You need to purchase the tag for $1.50 and have your calf tagged before turning in your ID sheet.

Horse Workouts Scheduled Weekly horse practices will begin Wednesday, May 4, 6:30 pm and continue until county fair. All 4-H and FFA members must wear a properly fitted riding helmet every time you’re mounted. For questions concerning horse practices, contact Mandy Breheny at 641-221-0705 or [email protected].

Dog Handling Classes to Begin Dog project classes will begin Sunday, June 5 on the fairgrounds. Classes will be held 6 – 7:30 pm each Sunday evening. Exhibitors need to bring their dog’s vaccination certificates for Rabies, Distemper,

Parvo, and Bordetella (Kennel Cough) signed by a veterinarian to the first class, along with leash and choke chain. Daniella Noland, county fair dog superintendent will lead the classes.

SOFA XXII “All Iowa Tour” registra-tion forms will be available on Monday, May 2 and must be in by Friday, May 13. Adair County is allotted 26 total participants, includ-

ing committee members. Registration is on a first come first served basis. The office will not keep intent to participate list, a completed form and $40 registration fee guarantees your spot. Registration forms will be available on the Adair County Extension website, Face-book page and in the office.

The dates are Monday, June 13 and Tuesday, June 14 for an exciting adventure to Central and Northeast Iowa including work-shops at Iowa State University in Ames! Other stops include Iowa Farm Bureau, Center Grove Orchard, Summit Farms and the John Deere Tractor Museum.

The 2016 planning committee members from Adair County are – Tim Beane, Alyssa Christensen, Matt Clarke, Hailey Gross, Owen Hensley, Hannah Jorgensen, Skyler Rawlings, Shelby Soper, and Madison Suhr, adult advisors are Kathy Rohrig and Beth Baudler. The team has been meeting to plan the trip and contact donors to make the trip possible.

Thank to our most recent SOFA donors are: Paul & Jeanette Jorgen-sen, Summit Super Stars 4-H Club and Adair-Casey FFA. If you would like to contribute please contact any committee member or the Extension office.
