ACTIVE DIRECTORY “Configuration”
Note: “In order to install Active directory we must have server family OS” Before getting started with DC configuration, set your systems time, name & IP.
We can configure Active directory either by adding; “Active Directory Domain Services” Role from server manager or directly by typing “dcpromo” command in the Run window.
Adding Roles From Server Manager
Click Start menu Administrative Tools Server Manager

Selecting Role
Click on “Add Roles” and select the “Active Directory Domain Services” Role from the appearing window.

After selecting role click Next to proceed.
Confirm Installation

We will then be informed that installing AD requires us to run dcpromo.exe afterwards to make the server a fully functional domain controller. Click install to continue.
Once done we'll get the success screen

Click close to continue.
Once done the server manager will list our ADDS service with the sign beside it, click on it to run Dcpromo.exe, to deploy/install Active Directory

Click on the blue text to continue.
This will start the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard.

We will next get the screen as below, Click Next to continue.

Operating System Compatibility
Next the following screen will appear which explains the compatibility level of Windows Server 2008 with the older windows versions i.e. e.g. older versions of Windows may have problems with a bunch of things including Windows Deployment Services.

Choosing Domain & Forest
Now we get to choose what type of domain we will setup, if you are configuring your DC for the very first time (when you don’t have any domain & forest before) then select the second option i.e. Create a new domain in a new forest.

Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)
Type the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) for your domain, e.g. microsoft.com, click Next, the typed name will be verified to avoid conflict, in case the name we have typed already exits.

Forest Functional Level
Next we have to choose the forest functional level, click the drop down menu and select Windows Server 2008 from the three choices (Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008).

On selecting Windows Server 2008 you will be able to add only DC’s that are running Windows Server 2008.
Click Next to proceed your configuration.
Clicking Next will give some additional options, leave them as they are (DNS Server selected) and click on Next again.

Specify the Location for AD Database
In the following screen we are asked where to store the AD database, Logfiles and Sysvol, stay with the defaults and click Next.

Setting Password
We are then prompted to set the Directory Services restore mode administrator account password. Type your desired password & Click Next.

Summary Finally we will get a summary of our actions. We can use the Export settings… option if we want to save our configuration settings for future use or to perform unattended installation. It will save all the configurations.

Finishing Installation
After rebooting the system your server will be configured as a Domain Controller.
You can also achieve the same functionality by just typing the dcpromo command in Run Window instead of first adding ADDS role from server manager, the same setup will be Initiated as for the adding roles.

To Join Domain From Client PC
To join domain, client must be from the same network as that of the server.
Logon to the client PC Right click the Computer icon Click Properties
Click Change & then click OK
We will get the following window: Type the name of the domain you want to join & click OK

Type the User name & Password for the administrator account of the Domain Controller to join domain & click OK.
Finally, we will get the Welcome screen
