Acupuncture is a therapeutic modality that in

volves the insertion and manipulation of flexible,

hair-thin needles at specific points on the body.

Acupuncture techniques have been used in East

Asia for more than 2,500 years and have

become popular throughout the world as pa

tients increasingly seek safe, effective alterna

tives to pharmaceuticals and surgery.

Many first-time patients are concerned that acu

puncture needles will feellike hypodermic injec

tions at the doctor's office. They won't. Acu

puncturists uses thin, flexible needles that you

will hardly feel when inserted.

There are many causes of pain and illness, and

each person is unique. Your acupuncturist will

listen carefully to your concerns and conduct a

comprehensive evaluation and detailed health

history to understand your particular situation.

Your treatment plan will be tailored to your

individual needs and continually adjusted

based on your response to treatment. The ben

efits of acupuncture are cumulative, but in most

cases you will begin to feel relief after just a few

sesslons.

Over the counter medications and expensive

prescription drugs may provide temporary relief

from your symptoms, but these medications can

lead to unwanted side effects and their effec

tiveness may diminish over time.

Acupuncture promotes the body.s innate

healing abilities and helps to reestablish the

body's natural state of balance, making it a safe,

chemical-free alternative for relief from many of

today's most common health complaints. For

many patients, the benefits of acupuncture are

long-Iasting, making it more affordable than

conventional treatments as wel l.

Acupuncture has no negative side effects. In

fact, the "side effects" many patients report

after acupuncture treatment include reduced

stress, improved mood, sounder sleep, and

better digestion. These beneficial side effects

occur because acupuncture helps regulate the

central nervous system. Most people find the

sensations of acupuncture treatment to be re

freshing and deeply relaxing.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest continually

practiced medical modalities in the world and

clinical research has validated its efficacy for

many common complaints, including low-back

pain, neck pain, headaches, and arthritis.

The Archives of Internal Medicine recently pub

lished a comprehensive review of 29 chronic

pain studies, totaling almost 18,000 partici

pants, which found that on average acupunc

ture reduces pain by about 50% and can be

more effective for chronic pain than conven

tional treatments.
