Every moment is a crossroads. There are a million paths laid out before you, each of them better than the last and none worse than the next. Choose a new path every second and never look back. Because everything you discover along the way will be yours forever. And that’s how you make life a ride.

Albert Head Confidence CourseThe Albert Head Confidence Course is available for training by DND units and groups. Confidence Course training serves several purposes such as: exposure to chal-lenges service personnel may encounter under operational conditions; improve cardio-respiratory efficiency; muscular strength and endurance; as well as develop speed, agility, self confidence, will-power, determination, initiative and team work, all of which are important morale build-ing qualities. Requesting units must have a qualified supervisor attend an orientation in order to request access to and con-duct training on the Confidence Course. Orientations are conducted by PSP fitness staff covering course protocol, procedures, and obstacle demonstrations focusing on technique and safety. Orientations are held in the Fall and Spring each year, or as required. Requirements for supervisors include a minimum rank of MS/MCpl and nomination by the Unit Training Of-ficer/NCO. Christina Van StarkenburgMFRC Volunteer

Just over one year ago, my husband and I said goodbye to our home with all of its cracks and ants, boarded a plane, and took off for our new home here in Victoria. The move had been pushed back twice, and

the whole affair was much more stressful than I could have imagined. Although, I’m willing to concede that at least some of that stress was because I was seven months pregnant. But, walking into our new home, I promise you it was all worth it.When we first arrived, I was struck by the

beauty of Victoria, all the cherry trees were blossoming, the sun was shining, it wasn’t mi-nus 30, but then I started to feel lonely.

No longer was I able to sit beside someone in class and tell them “I have the same sweater as you, except mine’s brown and therefore better,” to make a new friend. I also wasn’t working or looking for a job, because there weren’t enough days between our arrival and my due date for me to qualify for maternity leave, so that was out. And, because my body really liked morning sickness and didn’t want to let it go, I had trouble just getting out of the house to meet people in the park or at random events. Slowly my new home felt less welcoming

and homey, and more secluded and forsaken. However, I figured it was time for me to

meet new people. The first thing I decided to try was volunteering. After I made that de-cision, I came across an Activity Guide and

inside it mentioned that the MFRC was look-ing for writers. As a journalist, this seemed like a good fit. So I signed up.My first article took me to the Away Ca-

fés, where I met my first new friend, Krys-tal. Through a series of super short walks, that gradually grew longer after my son was born, we toured the town. She showed me her favourite places to walk, like the Lagoon and the Gorge, drove me to the Cafés, and watched tons of movies with me.While the MFRC has a lot of other events

and programs like the Away Cafés, since they are held at CPAC, I can’t get to them unless I cab, and that gets expensive, which is unfor-tunate, because I really wanted to go to 123 Music & Me and Playing Together, so I could meet other military moms with little kids. While I was trying to figure out what my

son and I could do instead, a mom from my prenatal class told me about a Mom and Babe Group at Pearkes Recreational Centre on Wednesday afternoons. It’s fantastic. The group is full of moms and dads for me to chat with and babies for Oliver to play with. Sometimes, special guests will come to talk about things like daycare, baby nutrition, and yoga. After spending so much time watching each

other’s children grow and learn how to crawl or walk, several of us moms have started meet-ing up at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre to go swimming with our little ones. I cannot recommend the lazy river enough. It’s amaz-ing. So despite a slow start, I’ve gathered enough

friends that, even when some are posted I’ll still have a collection of people to call when I want to go swimming, see a movie, or go for a walk in the park.Christina Van Starkenburg is a writer, military

spouse, mother of one, and a MFRC volunteer, who enjoys knitting and reading in the spare time she pretends to have.

Dr. Darrell Menard Strengthening the Forces

If you asked the average Canadian to come up with a list of health risk factors, the list would likely include smoking, obe-sity, high blood pressure, diabetes and el-evated cholesterol. Very few of us would include “sitting” in

that list, and yet there is a growing body of research showing that prolonged sitting significantly increases your risk of death. This is concerning considering how many of us spend the day working at a computer, and then may spend more time sitting in front of a TV or computer screen at home. What is especially concerning about this

research is that it is revealing that regular exercise does not appear to cancel out the ill effects of prolonged sitting. It seems our bodies are programmed to move, and when we stop moving, bad things can happen. Research indicates that the muscle activity that occurs with standing and moving trig-gers important biological processes needed to break down sugars and fats in the body.

When we sit too long, these processes stall and do not resume full activity until we are moving again. The only way to effectively address this

issue can be summarized in four simple words: sit less – move more. Here are some strategies that we can use to help us sit less and move more throughout our day:• Stand up and walk around while you

talk on the phone.• Find a workstation that allows you to

work while standing.

• While watching TV, get up and move around during the commercials.• Stand up during meetings.• Don’t e-mail office colleagues – walk to

their desk and talk to them.• Stand up and walk around after you

have been sitting for 30 minutes. The bottom line as far as your health is

concerned is that it really doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you spend more time on your feet, and less time in your seat.

grow the community - grow from the experience• Are you looking for a way to give

back to the community?

• Do you enjoy meeting new people and working as part of a team?

• Does the laughter and tireless en-ergy of children and youth inspire you?

• Do you like being in the spotlight at special events?

• Are you most comfortable working “behind the scenes” doing research, assisting with administration, in-formation and event planning?

The MFRC cannot exist without its volunteers! Thanks to the remarkable contributions made by volunteers, the military community grows stronger and the good news is that volunteers say that they grow from the experience at the same time!

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram. Ten years ago, the latter two sites didn’t ex-ist and the former two were just beginning. Now they’re an integral part of many peo-

ple’s lives. People all over the world use so-cial media to connect with others, conduct their businesses, and keep up with current trends. Military families are no different.Mead Simon, whose wife is in the mili-

tary band, considers social media to be an extension of his everyday life. He uses it to advertise his business and keep in touch with the world around him. “I use it for keeping in touch with what’s

happening on base and in the PMQ’s: the living areas. I mean I see my wife every day; if she goes out of town, it’s for a week. It’s not the same as other military spouses that use it to keep in contact with their spouses who go overseas for months,” said Simon. Simon wants his son to see social media

the same way that he does. To help his son learn how to use social media responsibly and safely, Simon lets him watch when he uses the different sites so his son can see what Simon is willing to post. Simon’s standard for what’s acceptable is

that if it is public record, then it is okay to put online.

Joanna Church, a navy spouse and the Virtual Program Developer for the U.S. and Yellowknife Family Services, also sees the benefits of social media. In her role, she provides virtual programs

for CAF families who are residing in the States. “Social media is very important to mili-

tary members stationed on OUTCANs. [It allows them] to stay connected, get advice, [and] learn about resources,” said Church in a Facebook conversation. However, Church is also cautious about

the use of social media because of the prob-lems it can bring. “Because of the privacy perils of social

media, understanding how to use these platforms in a responsible and mission sup-portive way is really key,” she said. For in-stance, information about deployments or operational security should not be posted for security reasons.Constable Mike Russell, with the Victo-

ria Police Department had four suggestions about posting on social media sites safely. First, avoid posting pictures of your chil-

dren. Second, be careful when you tweet or post

about your day-to-day activities that you don’t create an online record of when you are out. Third, temper your desire to post jealousy

inducing pictures of your vacation. “You know it’s great to do that stuff when

you get home. Take your pictures, but then upload them when you get home. Because you’re back there already, and you don’t have to worry about being gone and having your house left open like that,” said Russell. The fourth and final piece of advice that

he had was to use a virtual private network (VPN), which can be downloaded for free. Doing so hides your internet protocol (IP) address by making it look like you are post-ing from different locations. “Think of it as a telephone call. Instead

of your iPhone calling Twitter, your iPhone calls somewhere in the Southern U.S., and that calls Twitter. So it kind of does a little hop in between. Then your information is encoded between your device or desktop and where the VPN is hosted,” said Russell. These sites are never going to go away.

They may change formats or names, but as long as the internet exists so will they. That is not a bad thing though. Used responsibly they allow us to keep in contact with our military member, other family members, and friends no matter where the military may move us.Christina Van Starkenburg is a writer, mili-

tary spouse, mother of one, and a MFRC vol-unteer, who enjoys knitting and reading in the spare time she pretends to have.

SASY (Supplied Air Snorkelling for Youth) (5 – 8 yrs)Can’t wait to turn 8 to try SCUBA diving? No problem! Aquarius Dive Club offers children as young as 5 years old their 1st

breath on SCUBA with the Supplied Air Snorkelling for Youth (SASY) Program. on the Move? Here’s some Relocation Tips

colour

Approximately 15,000 Canadian Forces members move bases each year. Moving means change and the process

can be a challenge. With each new loca-tion, families need to re-establish medi-cal services. Spouses need to make new friends and find employment. Children will have to start new schools, develop new friendships and find new activities in

the local area. If you are relocating this summer here are

some tips that may be helpful to your family.

• Get to know the re-sources that are avail-able to you

Do as much research as possible prior to the move. Find out what benefits you are entitled to from the Integrated Re-

location Program. • Develop an action plan

Make a list of all the things that need to be done prior, during and after the move. Once you have made the list decide when each task needs to be done. There are a lot of things that need to be done as part of a move so spread out the tasks into manageable chunks.• Gather information about the key re-

location topicsGather detailed information about the

key relocation topics that are pertinent to you. These topics include medical care,

housing, education, child care, and em-ployment.• Make the move a family affairTalk about the move openly with your

family. Express any concerns you may have and discuss some of the positive things about the move. Take a team ap-proach and have everyone participate in the tasks. For example, kids may want to pack a box of their favourite toys.• Take time for yourselfFinally it is very important to take care

of yourself during this busy time. Sched-ule in some fun things to do with friends or family.Moving to a new base can be a stress-

ful time but it can also be a very excit-ing time. This is an opportunity for your family to see new things, try new activi-ties and meet new people. Preparation is the key to a smooth move

and it will allow your family to enjoy the positive aspects of the move.Need more help with relocation? Visit

www.familynavigator.ca to access an in-teractive e-tool called Navigating Your Move.

The MARPAC Health & Wellness Team is a group of helping professionals who work collaboratively to address health and wellness concerns in the MARPAC community. Our primary initiative is the MARPAC Health & Wellness Strategy - an ambitious project involving over 70 people determined to create a culture of health and wellness within the defence team in five priority areas:

(1) Active Living

(2) Addictions Free Living

(3) Healthy Nutrition and Weight Wellness

(4) Organizational Wellness

(5) Social and Mental Wellness

The Strategy is a collaborative initiative that includes military, civilian and family members. Six Working Groups meet regularly to identify ways in which our community health outcomes can be positively impacted. For instance, the Healthy Nutrition and Weight Wellness Working Group conducted fleet galley surveys and the outcome has been the

rearrangement of unhealthy foods (duff) and the prominent display of fresh, cut fruits and vegetables. Healthy environ-ments greatly affect people’s food choices. When healthy foods are more readily available, their consumption increases.

Stay tuned for more MHWS outcomes!
