There aren’t too many bet-ter places to play golf in the world than here in North Florida and South Georgia. We can play year-‘round and some of the most desirable golf courses in the country are in our backyard. No mat-ter where you look, north to Sea Island or Amelia, any one of the courses here in town, the places in Ponte Vedra or St. Augustine and even south to Palm Coast and Daytona,

you can’t go wrong. Each one better than the next. The interest in golf here is so high, it’s one of the reasons the PGA Tour has their headquarters here. Then Commissioner Deane Beman saw the sup-port the Greater Jacksonville Open had among the fans and vol-unteers and along with the Fletcher brothers offer to sell the Tour the land for $1, a whole destination, community and world famous tournament sprung up under our noses.

There’s plenty of history surrounding the game, and not just what has happened at the Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass.

The Jacksonville Open was part of the barnstorming tour of profes-sionals going around the country. Hyde Park on the Westside was it’s home and the top names in golf were playing here for prize money. The 6th hole at Hyde Park is known as “Hogan’s Alley.” It’s a par three where the future Hall of Famer made an eleven. When asked how he made an eleven on the par three, Hogan reportedly looked at the lone reporter there, took a long drag on his cigarette and said, “I missed a five footer for ten.” (It’s a line parodied in the film “Tin Cup” by Kevin Costner.) The Ryder Cup was scheduled to be played here at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club in 1939, but the matches were cancelled because of WWII.

The whole concept of the Greater Jacksonville Open, the GJO, got it’s genesis when local golf pioneers Dick Stratton, John Tucker and oth-ers were sitting on stools at Silver’s Drug Store in Jacksonville Beach. Those guys knew Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus per-sonally and figured if they could get the big three to come, the tourna-ment would have a chance.

There’s a plaque in the fairway at Selva Marina’s 18th hole com-memorating Jack Nicklaus’ double-eagle on his way to victory. Arnold Palmer owned Hidden Hills and the tournament there and the associ-ated reverie raised a lot of eyebrows in town. And there’s the story of a famous player who played in the afternoon in Thursday’s first round when the GJO was at Deerwood and emerged from the bushes on Friday morning wearing the same clothes for his second round. Ap-parently the party at Deerwood after hours was pretty good!

Could you imagine a location called the “Swingers Tent” going over in our current politically correct environment? But that was the name

ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE 11

of THE place on A1A when fans, players and officials alike left the golf course and headed north from Sawgrass Country Club. That tent had it’s own set of stories.

As the home of The Players, the Stadium Course has it’s own share of stories as well, although most are now confined to the course. To clear out underbrush on that island left of 14, a bunch of goats were brought in, (thus the name “Goat Island”). One night when the water was low, the goats made their way to the clubhouse and climbed on the roof, eating away at shingles and causing all kinds of havoc. Beman was not happy.

Most players didn’t care for the course or the tournament early on. From Lee Trevino’s “We shouldn’t have to putt on dirt,” to Nicklaus’ “I don’t think you should have to hit 4-iron into the hood of a car,” Pete Dye’s design was not met with universal acclaim. But Jerry Pate jumped in the water, Fuzzy Zoeller wiped Greg Norman’s brow, Davis Love hooked a 1-iron out of the woods and onto 16 and the legend started to grow.

Although the tournament belongs much more to the PGA Tour now than to us, it’s still part of our history. A rich history of golf that’s ex-citing, dramatic, and quirky all at the same time.

Pisces (February 19- March 20) Now is a great time to start that new diet or exercise plan! The last half of the month agrees with you as your focus shifts towards meaningful relationships. If you are thinking about popping the question, wait until the last day of the month when all of the planets are aligned.

Capricorn (December 22- January 19) Expect May to be very enter-taining. Your creativity will be high, but your urge to work will be weaker than usual. Try taking a little down time or a vacation.

Bye Mel. Bye Liam. Hello Nick! It’s the month of May and everyone is anticipating the release of The Hangover 2! Yet just last month, a change in casting took a big name out of the credits and brought in Nick Cassavetes. The Hangover 2 film comes out on May 26th and the role of the “tattooist” was originally go-ing to be played by Mel Gibson. After objections from the cast and crew, Mel was replaced with Taken actor, Liam Neeson. However, in April the actor was removed from the comedy. Apparently his scenes needed to be re-shot and the actor was unable to do it. Liam was shooting the se-quel to “Clash of the Titans” in London. Nick Cassavetes who is a director aside from an actor was brought in to do the role. Director of the film, Todd Phillips stated, “We were in a complete time crunch so I called up Nick and asked if he would do the part. He came in and crushed it.”

From Rehab to the Gottis!Aside from jumping in films last minute, director/actor Nick Cassavetes has a huge project under his wing. Nick who directed, The Notebook, will direct a biopic. Biopic of whom you ask? The Gottis. “Gotti: Three Generations” will be setting into production. John Travolta has already been casted as John Gotti, the alleged crime boss. Highlight of it all is that Victoria Gotti may be getting played by Lindsay Lohan. It has been re-ported that Victoria chose Lindsay herself. The spot was beaten by Blake Lively and Sienna Miller. Lindsay has already started transforming herself to image the mob daughter in hopes of contracting the role in the film.

Page 23: Active Nightlife the Magazine May 2011

TJ Lavin Faces Surgery!Recovering from his BMX crash last year, TJ Lavin, is undergoing more surgery. People Mag-azine reported that he is heading back into the operating room to repair the wrist he broke. It is the second wrist surgery since the crash but if successful – it will help him regain the feeling he lost in three fingers. The host of MTV’s The Challenge told People, “I’m at about 40 per-cent on being able to move my wrist around. I’ve been wearing a brace lately to get the movement back and I have to get some carpel tunnel surgery. After that, everything will be sweet.” TJ, 34, has conquered numerous mile-stones since the crash. He stated that his brain is still slow on certain things but recovering is moving smoothly. “My accident has definitely changed my outlook on charity work because it’s time to give back. When I was at my lowest point, I saw what people did for me. That’s what I want to do for other people,” said the BMX rider. We’re all cheering for you on your challenge, TJ!

Preggers in Spring! As reported last month, actress Scarlett Johansson has been dating Sean Penn, 50. The couple has slowly become more public with their relationship. They’ve stemmed into one of the hottest new couples and the rumor mill has already started regarding whether Scarlett is preggers! A photo of the pair jogging near his Malibu, California home shows a “bump” that has people wondering if the Iron Man 2 actress is expecting. Scarlett’s rep re-leased a statement that says, “Scarlett is not pregnant. She’s outside running and it’s simply the placement of her shirt that is misleading.” I suppose time

will tell! Happily pregnant and expecting her third child with husband, Dean McDermott, is Beverly Hills 90210 alum, Tori Spelling. The 37-year-old Oxy-gen reality star told US Weekly that she’s nervous but beyond excited. Tori has two children with Dean; son Liam, 4, and daughter, Stella, 2. The actress is due to have #3 in October. Looking good and pregnant basking in the sun of Brazil is actress, Kate Hudson. The 31-year-old actress was vacationing in Brazil with daddy-to-be, Matthew Bellamy. The couple got together last spring and have been inseparable but don’t expect wedding bells just yet. Kate stated on the Graham Norton Show in January, “I don’t feel it neces-sary to get married. I am 31, already have one child, and have had a divorce, so it’s not necessarily the golden ticket. I just want to be happy.”

It’s Britney, B!tch!Enrique Iglesias didn’t want the opening slot for Britney Spears and an announcement was finally made on who will replace the vacancy! The current lady of hip-hop herself, Nicki Minaj. The announcement was made in the middle of March and the ladies took to Twitter to celebrate the tour. Britney showed off her touring support by tweeting, “Could not think of a sexier Femme Fatale than @nickiminaj to come on tour with me! Gonna be a hot summer people!” The tour kicks off in Sacramento, CA. Britney also released a remix track with Rihanna for Rihanna’s hit single, “S&M”. The two singers are huge on the market right now and the collaboration formed a funky remix to the already highly played single. During a radio interview when asked if the two women would do a music video, Rihanna responded with, “I hope so. I want to spank Britney Spears.” I can’t imagine any guys that would object to seeing that!

98 Degrees & Stripping Down!Hmmm…That Chippendale looks familiar? You very well could be saying that to yourself this month of May in Vegas! The Ex-98 Degrees singer, Jeff Timmons, will be stripping it down and putting on the bow tie for a 4-week special guest run feature in the Las Vegas show, Chippendales. There is no word yet on how much the 37-year-old singer will receive but, hey...at least we know we can pay him in singles!

XOXO — D!

Q:

ASK AN ATTORNEY

A:

26 ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE

The cops are always hassling people like me and I really want to just be left alone. Without going too much into it, I’m young and I have medical issues that marijuana helps with. I know it’s not legal here, but I’m only doing it at home. My nosey neighbor recently called the police and they gave me a ticket.  Do you think we can ever get legalization passed?

While it may seem like a sure fire way to never be arrested is to get a medical marijuana card, the truth is some police officers will arrest anyone if they feel like it or if they can get a collar. In fact, some claim that Medical Marijuana cardholders are being targeted in San Fran-cisco. The Judges there have dismissed over 70 cases, many of which were based on misconduct during illegal searches of a residential hotel where video surveillance showed police illegally entering a private home conducting a warrantless search based on “the smell of mari-juana.” The case was thrown out because the cops falsely claimed they had obtained the permission of the apartment dweller.

In this case the police just entered the apartment behind the owner which has sometimes been considered silent assent to a search but the court found otherwise. For more information on this case google “Cops, lies, and videotape Pt.2” for well-written article in San Francisco Weekly's The Snitch. Clients often tell me they did not give police permission to search and the police did it anyway. Under the right circumstances, even without video, we’ve been able to get the evidence suppressed,  but the client still had to pay attorney's fees and sat in jail overnight.

The problem with police misconduct usually doesn’t come into the spotlight in Jacksonville because, if a civil suit was filed, the defendants whose rights are violated are still considered “criminals” by a jury (with

no legal reason for having the marijuana they were arrested for) and therefore these clients can be viewed as less deserving of the right to liberty or privacy.

The problem is the best civil plaintiff are the persons who didn’t have any illegal substance and since they are usually left alone or sent on the way after an illegal search, they often feel lucky instead of feeling violated and thus no suit is filed.

If a  group of people came forward with enough proof of such viola-tions...well, then a suit could be filed.  The best way to protect yourself from what you perceive as hassling is to know and exercise your legal rights. The ability to consent to a search also means the right to loudly say “NO! You do not have the right to search my home [or vehicle] without a warrant!”

Finally,  if they won’t videotape such invasions of privacy you could install a video surveillance device and record it yourself. As always, keep your attorney on speed dial.

MICHELLE AXTELL GETS BACK TO THE BASICS

Over and over again I get asked the same questions about makeup. Some of these include which products to use, how to apply these products, which ones are the best for you skin, etc. So I decided in this article, to give the most basic information to help you come to the easiest decision when lost in the chaotic cosmetic aisle. Apart from the way of applying make up, the make up products used are equally important. Make sure you are using quality prod-ucts because the continuous use of cheap makeup products can seriously damage the skin.

Foundation is a key item used in the beginning of every make

up application. There are a variety of foundations available on the market, and they can come in liquid, powder or cream form. Foun-dations also vary according to one’s skin type. For instance, there are different foundations for oily, dry and normal skin. When you are buying a foundation for yourself, keep all of these details in mind. Before you start applying the foundation, remember to clean your face thoroughly. Good skin is the key to a great foundation applica-tion. Massage your face with a toner and a moisturizer, let it set for 5 minutes (so it has time to penetrate the skin) and then get started with your foundation. The purpose of using a foundation is to give a proper base and make all the areas of the face look even. That does not mean to cake it on! Less is more when it comes to foundation. Make sure you don’t have a foundation line on your jaw before jumping to your next makeup product. It is NOT a good look. If you find that your foundation is too dark and leaves a line, apply the foundation slightly further down your neck and apply bronzer to blend. It’s a quick fix, however its best to find a foundation that doesn’t need fixing.. After you are done with the foundation, you can apply a dusting of powder to any areas that tend to become excessively oily(mainly the T-zone). I don’t suggest an all over powder application, as this tends to dull the skin which in turn gives an ‘aged’ effect. Young, youthful skin glows! Concealers are used to hide pimples, dark circles, scars and blemishes on the face. You can find concealers in liquid or cream form. I prefer cream for the staying power, especially in the humid climate of Florida. Apply the concealer on the blemish that you want to hide and spread it towards the edges. Try not to overuse the concealer (not more than twice) on the blemish because it may make look obvious that you are trying to hide something. Set with powder.

Page 36: Active Nightlife the Magazine May 2011

Eye make-up has the ability the lift the entire face. The first thing that has to be done before any shadow, liner, or mascara can be applied is an eye shadow base. Eye shadow bases not only hold your eye products for

an extended amount of time, but they also make them appear smoother and

more vibrant.

Many people apply eye shadow that matches their attire. While this can sometimes work, take the time and also try eye shadows that suit your skin color. The choice in shade tends to let your natural beauty come through without being distracted by a neon green color choice on your lid. You can use 2 - 7 colors for eye shadow, but make sure that all the colors blend well. Once you are done with the eye shadow, the next step would be the eyeliner. Though black eyeliner is most commonly used, you can also make use of brown eyeliner for a softer effect. The first coating of the eyeliner should be a thin line and should be drawn closer to the eyelashes as this gives the effect of thicker eye lashes. This type of application gives you the option for more, but the also allows you to see what you may look like without

a overly thick application of liner. If you feel you want more drama, go back and make your second application thicker. After applying your eyeliner, finish up with your favorite mascara.

Lip Color is necessary to complete the look of the whole make up. Whichever lip color you buy, ensure that you buy one of superior quality and a color that suits your complexion well. If you have dry or chapped lips, either use a lip scrub or apply lip balm prior to your application. Cracked lips just aren’t cute. ;) For added definition, pair a lip liner with your lip color. A great lip liner can make all the difference to your favorite lip color!

Blush is the final step of make up. The color of the blush should match your skin tone and also the overall make-up. A good blush has the ability to wake up the whole face. Whether you choose a cream or powder formula, make sure that you don’t skip this step. Skincare: Remember that cosmetics contain chemicals, so make sure that every night you remove them completely by washing your face with a good face cleanser. Follow your face wash with moisturizer and eye cream, and wake up with healthy glowing skin!

Lets clear up some misconceptions about hair. Truth is, hair is only living matter as its base below the surface of the scalp. Like the tip of one's finger nail, hair is dead matter, and can be clipped shorter once discarded.

We must maintain a healthy environment below the surface of the scalp where the hair is germinated, or born. Hair, in its simplest form, is 100% Keratin (protein). Our diets should consist of a good balance of easily digested protein, (i.e.: dairy products, poultry and meat). I tell my vegan clients, good protein alternates are nuts, beans, and old faithful...peanut butter. With the popular emergence of low carbohy-drate/high protein diets, we will begin to see more heads of hair with less frizz and/or easily split ends.

Vitamins are your friends! Average hair growth is ½ inch per month. Taking hair vitamin supplements can speed up normal hair growth to ¾ inches, each month. First, you would need to take a multivita-

min that encompasses all of your body's daily needs. Then, you can worry about extra nutrition for your hair. Our hair especially likes B complex, biotin, folic acid, pantothentic acid, iron, zinc, flax seed oil, black current seed oil, kelp, and silica. Your hair is a by product of your body's functions. Therefore, the nicer you are to your body, the nicer your hair will look.

Shampoo alone cannot increase the overall health of your hair. Shampoo, no matter how exotic or expensive, or what extravagant ingredients are added to it, are designed to perform one single task. That task is to clean the hair of excessive natural oils, body sweat, and environmental impurities.

One contradiction, is that cleansing the hair alone will keep it healthy once you have stripped it of all of its natural protective properties, like serum (natural oils). The longer your hair is, the natural oils have less of a chance to reach the mid to end lengths of your hair while shampooing. This leaves the older and more vulnerable sections of the hair exposed to even more damage from heated styling tools and chemical processes, such as coloring or permanent straightening. Mid-to-end lengths of your hair do not require the same intense daily cleansing as the first few inches of hair closest to the scalp.

The solution is very simple.... as you gently massage your scalp while shampooing, focus and only apply your shampoo within the first 2-8 inches of the hair closest to your scalp. While rinsing the shampoo from the base section of the hair, it will quickly pass through the mid-length to ends of your hair, hence providing these areas with the lighter cleansing that this section requires.

Now, this brings us to the conditioners or proteins. Most people have the misconception that daily conditioning will cause your hair to be flat or it will add weight to your hair. When conditioning correctly,

healthy hair

Page 40: Active Nightlife the Magazine May 2011

this will be no such problem. Knowing how to physically condition the hair and what types of conditioners to use will undoubtedly change your life. Whether your hair is thin or fine, or thick and frizzy, conditioning is simply the reverse concept of shampooing. Consider-ing that throughout the course of the day the first 3 inches of your hair closest to your scalp will receive an adequate supply ofnatural hair oils. Therefore, if you condition this area with conditioner, it can become over conditioned, heavy, and less manageable.

The solution is to apply your conditioner from mid-lengths to ends. Then gently distribute the ends with your fingers. I tell some of my clients to keep wide tooth combs in the shower to help with this, as well. This will ensure even distribution, detangling, and seal split ends. By the time you finish, the conditioner will have remained on your hair for the appropriate 3-5 minutes to be effective in temporarily repairing any damaged or frizzy areas. Deep condition-ers should be applied the same way. The only difference would be the time the deep conditioner remained on the hair. The time could be extended up to 20 minutes to allow proper nourishing into each strand. Deep conditioning should be done sparingly. Deep condi-tioning the hair more than once and week or twice a month could cause the opposite intended effect. Overuse of a protein based deep conditioner to strengthen hair, could cause the hair to become dry and brittle. Just as if you were to use an oil based deep conditioner could cause your hair to become limp and lifeless. Always consult with your stylist because that's what they are there for.

Hey everyone! I’m back this month to address the intimidation factor associated with large gym environments. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about which gym is the best to use for specific purposes such as training, cardio, MMA and even crossfit. I have highlighted a few of my favorite gyms here in Jacksonville. First, the new workout craze, crossfit. Crossfit combines timed boot camp style stations. This type of training allows you to compare yourself against your peers in any event, giving you plenty to look forward to for your next workout. My favorite crossfit gym is Crossfit Raggenrock on Beach Blvd. Here, you can find two ex-marines running the gym, so expect to get an amazing workout! Looking for a gym and feeling a little intimidated by those big gyms with equipment that looks like it could be from Mars? For the “beginner” I would suggest Anytime Fitness, Snap Fitness or Pulse Fitness. All of these gyms are electronic key carded

24-hour access gyms. The cardio and weight equipment supplied, in addition to the 24-hour access, will whip your body into shape in no time! With multiple locations, these gyms make it easy to swing on by while not feeling as intimidated. I’m currently training at Lifestyle Gym. I recently switched to this gym to get ready for the N.P.C. Jr. Nationals. I was looking for a new gym to train at that had all the equipment I needed, under one roof. Trust me when I say this, Lifestyle has it all! There is so much cardio equipment that you will never have to wait to get in shape. In addition to the numerous cardio machines, Lifestyle has every class you could want from yoga to spinning. The staff is always very friendly and knowledgeable. You can

get all these great amenities for only $19.99 a month with a zero enrollment

fee and no contacts! Yes, you heard me right, no contracts! Go see

my friend Brian and he will be sure to take care of you.

That’s pretty much the rundown of the best spots to train in Jacksonville based on your personal needs. Thank you all for your support every day. Until

next month, train hard!

Over the years, we have heard to stay away from caffeine, espe-cially coffee because it was being classified as a drug. “Say no to drugs” has been our world-wide motto and this campaign was affecting the coffee bean industry; however, there has never been a study or test that has proven coffee or caffeine has a connection to a heart condition or any other medical problem. Drinking about 2 cups of coffee could possibly cause a rapid heart beat in a small percentage of people and could temporar-ily raise their body temperature. Some weight loss clients have been advised to drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning before a workout to help reduce body fat. How this works is that the client will awake with an empty stomach, drink the 2 cups of cof- fee and proceed to workout. The caffeine in the coffee will boost their endurance by pro-longing fatigue and help the client burn just body fat. What many people do wrong is they eat a meal right before a work-out, usually high carbohydrates or no meal at all and wonder why they crash during a workout.

Unfortunately, you will only maintain your current weight and body fat instead of tapping into your excess body fat storage. Some other benefits to drinking coffee are: IMPROVEMENTS TO LONG TERM MEMORY People who consume 2-3 cups of coffee every day are more productive at work and remember things better. As per a recent study, coffee drinkers are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease in their golden years. RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS As per a study conducted by the Harvard Medical School, regular coffee drinkers are 50% less likely to suffer from breast, colon and prostate cancer. This can be attributed to the high antioxidant content in coffee. TYPE 2 DIABETES PREVENTION Several studies have shown that Chlorgoenic acid found in coffee can prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Caffeine is known to raise blood sugar levels and increase energy expen-diture in the short-term. It also increases your body’s insulin sensitivity, lowering the risk of developing Type 2 Dia-betes.

NATURAL DIURETIC Caffeine content in coffee causes the kidneys to

ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE 49

Page 50: Active Nightlife the Magazine May 2011

produce more urine, which helps in flushing out the toxins from the body. The only proven negative effect of coffee is that unfiltered coffee beans have compounds that could possibly raise your blood cholesterol as much as 20 points. Basically, stay away from coffee made in a French press. Many people claim the flavor is better but obviously not healthy for the body. There-fore, drink only filtered coffee!!

COFFEE FAST FACTS 1 cup of tea has more caffeine than regular coffee

1 cup of coffee can enhance your alertness1 shot of espresso has less caffeine than regular coffee

Moderation is the key here – limit your coffee intake to 2-3 cups (or fewer) a day and do not over indulge! So, go ahead and have a java jolt and enjoy! Take advantage of the benefits a hot cup of coffee can do for you. One short, skinny latte to go could add amazing results to your life!!
