What’s a big deal anymore? Jacksonville has grown from a town of 200,000 in 1980 to a sprawling city of nearly 1.4 million in the last 30 years. Yet, it’s hard to pin down just what is a big deal to the peo-ple who live here. Is it because we’re so diverse? “Westsiders” almost never go to the beach. If you live on the Northside, you rarely venture south of the St. Johns. Beach people never come over the ditch.

And if you’re south of town, everything you need is right there. So why is it so hard for everybody to make a big deal about something? Even the recent city election failed to capture anybody’s attention as less than 29 percent of voters turned out. Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver called that apathy by the community “shameful.”

I often get asked, “What in the world did you cover before the Jag-uars came here?” Well, believe it or not, there were plenty of things to capture our attention and many of them were considered a big

deal. College football in Gainesville, Tallahassee and Athens (and even in Miami) was and still the thing that captures everybody’s attention. Every weekend in the fall was some kind of celebration, some bigger than others. When the Florida/Georgia game rolls around, the city has a spark not seen any other week. The Gator Bowl is fun, but as far as the locals go, they think it’s an excursion for the two teams’ fans. Super Bowl XXXIX was a big deal, but there were a lot of people who decided, “I’m not going downtown into that mess” and just stayed home. That was a shame. It was well run, well organized and starting on Thursday the weather made the experience nearly perfect. Fans from New England and Philadelphia thought so, as nearly 90 percent of our visitors didn’t arrive until Thursday night.

The Players is a fun week but honestly as the GJO it was a bigger deal to the locals. I don’t know if it is because of the corporate aspect of the tournament or it’s isolation in Ponte Vedra (it was played at Selva Marina, Deerwood and Hidden Hills as the GJO) but it’s a little re-moved from even golfers on the Northside and Westside.

We used to have gymnastics competitions, national bowling meetings, and kart races that seemed to be a big deal.

When The Jackson’s opened here, that was a big deal. The Rolling Stones in 1989. Very big. U2, Garth Brooks? All seemed to envelope just about everybody in the city in some way. Honest.

The Jaguars are a big deal. No matter whether they sell out or not, they’re a big deal. We’re one of only 31 cities (two in New York) with an NFL franchise so when you’re in that kind of elite company, you’re a big deal.

Now our population is exploding, the geography of the city is split by the river and roads (I-95 and I-10) and everybody has their own thing

to do. Maybe it’s just growing pains but I liked it when everybody thought something was a big deal.

Is this where we’ve gotten to in sports? The 24-hour news cycle has brought us a whole different idea about what’s happening when we’re supposed to be “at play.” We know every detail of how much everybody’s making. We know the minute-by-minute analysis of every negotiation, every dollar that’s accepted or rejected and the story changes five times on any given day.

Because sports “journalists” are now competing with blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other social media, the information is blurred. Cutting through the “dis” information is as much of the job as finding the in-formation in the first place. I like the instant information and the ac-cess the social media gives to fans (and media) alike when it comes to hearing what players, coaches and even organizations have to say. But it’s just that. What they have to say. There’s an agenda and sometimes the truth is even in question. That used to be what the media was all about: filtering through all of the blather and finding something close to the truth. Hopefully, some of that will survive. Your Mom probably told you once, “Don’t believe everything you hear,” or something like that. She’s right.

Sam Kouvaris has been active in Jacksonville since 1981 as a sports reporter with WJXT Channel 4 News. Sam also hosts a TV show on Monday nights after the Jaguars game called The End Zone. He is a member of the Pro Hall of Fame Selection Commit-tee (which only 37 other members have the honor to be a part of ). Sam is an Emmy award-winner and has won the Associated Press Broadcast Award.

o YOUR #1 SOURCE TO EVERYTHING GOING ON IN JACKSONVILLE, FL!

Taurus (April 20- May 20) All that hard work you have been doing will pay off for you this month! Be prepared to reap big rewards during the first half of the month. Go out on a limb and do something out of the norm to start heating up the beginning of your summer fling.

Gemini (May 21- June 20) Information that you receive may be incorrect so be cautious. You may feel compelled to just stay at home, so BBQs and the backyard may take precedence over fruity cocktails and loud music. Try finishing that home improvement project that you have been putting off.

Cancer (June 21- July 22) Budgets that you put into place previ-ously will lead to a surplus this month. Changes you made with a significant other will bear fruit. Towards the end of the month

expect to receive a very nice, meaningful insight about yourself from someone else.

Leo (July 23-August 22) The first three weeks of April will be a great time

to create new relationships. Dive into the deep end and start a whirlwind romance. Towards the end of the month expect to get a blast from the past as people who owe you money will finally pay up.

Virgo (August 23-September 22) Unexpected occurrences may happen that can affect your health and money. Stay away from over-indulgence and continue to be patient. Towards the end of the month, you will make a good friend that will be there through thick and thin.

Libra (September 23- October 22) Spring into Spring by taking mini-vacays with close friends, but be sure to check the details

multiple times before leaving. The latter half of the month will be pleasantly surprising for you as a job may turn into a career.

Scorpio (October 23- November 21) Your energy and excitement about your job will toss you into the spotlight and highlight your achievements. Expect to receive a promotion or pay increase from all of your hard work.

Sagittarius (November 22- December 21) This month will open doors for you. That may entail taking your education to another level completely or just opening a really thick book. With all of that studying, expect to receive a large career boost.

Capricorn (December 22- January 19) April is all about listening. Just when you feel like you cannot stand any more of the pres-sures of finances, work and your significant other, things will turn around. Don’t follow your instinct to bolt. The end of the month will provide solid ground for you.

Aquarius (January 20- February 18) Personal relationships will take over your life in the first half of April. If you are not in a com-mitted relationship, then start to look for your happiness through your business partners. Remember to tell them how appreciative you are of them.

Pisces (February 19- March 20) Now is a great time to start that new diet or exercise plan! The last half of the month agrees with you as your focus shifts towards meaningful relationships. If you are thinking about popping the question, wait until the last day of the month when all of the planets are aligned.

Aries (March 21- April 19) Romance flows freely in your life this month. However, be weary towards the end of the month. Pay at-tention to your health and your job this month. Clear and sound decision making will allow things to come together for you in a very beneficial way.

Talk about #winning! Out from a quick trip to rehab, Charlie Sheen has grabbed Hollywood by the reins. Joining Twitter and causing trending topics such as #tigerblood and #winning, Charlie has caused a stir. While in rehab, he was in discus-sions with WB to continue to have pay for the cast and crew who were off while Charlie was seeking help. On March 7, WB made his termination effective immediately. They made no statements regarding production or if Charlie’s character was going to be replaced. TMZ obtained a copy of the letter that states that Charlie was fired because he committed a felony involving “moral turpitude.” Charlie took himself to Ustream and talked about who he hated: co-creator of Two and a Half Men, Chuck Lorre. Charlie has filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit against Chuck Lorre and Warner Brothers for breach of contract in the Los Angeles Superior Court. The papers filed by Charlie’s attorney, Marty Singer, states that he is seeking payment for the scrapped Two and a Half Men episodes as well as damages on behalf of the show’s crew, siting that he was removed un-justly from the show. The lawsuit is for more than $100 million plus puni-tive damages! Charlie tweeted as papers were filed, “#Fastball; Torpedo away...You corporate Trolls were warned. And now you’ve been served!”

Still Free Weezy!Continuing to stay out of the legal system light is rapper Lil Wayne. He was recently stopped at the Miami airport and received a contraband search by DEA officials. The rapper was released after the DEA officials found NOTHING! A few nights later, he was out at LIV Nightclub in South Beach celebrating Birdman’s birthday. Jacksonville’s own nightlife

VIP girls, Shannon Patsolic and Morgan McLeod, reported to me that Lil Wayne was not drinking and still having a great time! He even graced the stage with other fellow rap-pers for a few songs. Keep it going Weezy!

Rihanna Beating Photos Released!R & B artist, Chris Brown, has been granted permission to have communication with his ex-girlfriend, Rihanna again. Not saying the 23-year-old singer is going to want to hear from him though. New photos from the 2009 beating apparently taken in the hospital were released on MediaTakeout.com and they’re brutally graphic. Chris pleaded guilty in as-saulting the singer after the attack. He didn’t serve jail time but is still on probation until 2014. Her attorney did state in court when the restraining order was lifted that Rihanna does not have an objection to the new order as stated on TMZ. Chris beats her, Eminem lies to her, and Drake can’t remember her name. Poor girl!

Lady Mouseketeers!Britney Spears is trying to score a comeback with an album on the horizon. She released a music video for “Hold It Against Me” and probably received more money from product placement than she did good reviews. The video to me was pretty much a collection of garbage —splattered paint, old videos, and a game of who can find the most products featured. But hey, she made at least $500,000 for various product placements. The dating site, plentyoffish.com, forked out six figures for their site to be featured and saw a 20 percent spike in traffic the very next day. The 29-year-old singer is fea-tured on the cover of OUT magazine and in her interview finishes the sen-tence, “Christina Aguilera is...” with “truly talented.” Although many people can agree with Britney that Christina is truly talented, she certainly hasn’t

@MissSukiii

ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE 23

24 ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE

been the center of conversation lately for her singing skills. She forgot words at the Super Bowl, slipped and fell at the Grammys and has gained a signifi-cant amount of weight. In West Hollywood, the 30-year-old singer was with her boyfriend, Matt Rutler, when he got pulled over and arrested for driving under the influence. Christina was arrested for public intoxication, but US Weekly reported that there will be no charges against the singer. However, friends are beginning to express their concern for the singer, even suggesting that she consider going to rehab for alcohol abuse. On the upswing, Life & Style announced that Christina is planning to launch a new perfume, Secret Potion. Let’s hope this is a new turn for the better. Pink tweeted after Chris-tina’s arrest: “Out of Myself, Britney and Christina, didn’t everyone think I was gonna be the troublemaker?” Pink was pegged as the “wild child” of the singers who debuted around the same time. The 31-year-old mom-to-be finished her tweet with “LOOK MA!!! NO CUFFS!”

Bye Bye Biel! Also a former mousketeer Justin Timberlake and girlfriend, actress Jessica Biel have announced their split. Reps for the couple released a statement confirming the split: “We are confirming that they mutually have decided to part ways. The two remain friends and continue to hold the highest level of love and respect for each other.” The couple started dating in 2007 and was seen together in full PDA as recent as the Vanity Fair post-Oscars party. There were slight rumors of Justin being “close” to his Friends with Benefits co-star, Mila Kunis, but the two strictly claimed they are just friends. A source close to Justin and Jessica state that the couple simply grew apart.

Older Men & German Models!Recently divorced couple, Scarlett Johannsson and Ryan Reynolds have been happily moving on with new flames. Scarlett seems to be going a complete difference direction from Ryan. The 26-year-old actress has been seen spending time with actor, Sean Penn, 50. The actor who is almost twice her age, has been courting Scarlett with trips to Mexico and intimate dinners in LA. Ryan, 35, on the other hand, has been in South Africa filming Safe House, and cozying up with German model, Agnes Fischer, 25. The two have been seen together on and off the set. XOXO — D!

Q:

ASK AN ATTORNEY

A:

26 ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE

I was fired from my job. Should I sue for wrongful termination?  Florida is an at-will state, meaning you can be fired for no reason. However review the following questions to see if you might be cov-ered under some employment discrimination law:

1. Did my supervisors make any comments indicating bias or discrimination? If your supervisor made racist or sexist jokes, or said they thought you were too old or your disability made you unable to do the job, required you to work on religious holidays, or made other comments that would indicate a bias, you may have direct evidence of discrimination. 2. Was I treated differently than others in the same situation? If you don’t have evidence of discrimination, you may be able show clear discrimination if you were treated differently than those of a dif-ferent race, sex, religion, national origin, age, or other protected status under the same circumstances. Find out if there are people who have also been the victims of similar discrimination. Remember, though just because you were treated unfairly, that doesn’t prove discrimination. 3. Why was I fired? Most employees have a pretty good idea why they were fired. If you made a worker’s compensation claim and were fired a week later, that’s a good indication you were fired in retaliation for making the claim. If you reported your supervisor for Medicare fraud, and then the supervisor fires you, you may have a whistleblower claim. 4. Is my employer saying something false about me? If potential employers tell you are going to be hired as long as your references check out,  then the job is mysteriously no longer open when you call back, it’s a clue that your employer may be giving false or damaging

Very truly yours,

information about you. There are professional reference-checking companies who will call for you and see what an employer is saying about you. If you can prove it’s false, you may be able to sue for defamation. 5. Am I in some protected category? If you were fired after you took a protected action, you may be able to sue for retaliation. If you recently made a worker’s compensation claim, performed jury duty, served in the military, took family/medical leave, served as a witness in a lawsuit, provided testimony or evidence to EEOC, refused to partici-pate in illegal activity, reported illegal activity, or engaged in protected free speech it’s likely you are being retaliated against. If you believe something illegal has happened, contact an attorney to discuss the possibility that you may have a case. 6. The best course of action when terminated and—you believe there was not just cause —is to contact an attorney to discuss your options. If you are offered a severance package, it is best to have an attorney review it before signing. A personal Attorney will work to negotiate a better severance package for you so . . . as always keep your attorney on speed dial.

MICHELLE AXTELL SHARES SOME OF HER BEAUTY SECRETS

Do you want to know what all the pros know? Sit back, read and learn the tips and tricks that every pro makeup artist knows and uses daily.

SHELF LIFEWe all have a drawer/box/bag full of unused or once used cosmetic products. How long is too long to hold onto them? Let me tell you.

Mascara will usually last 2-3 months. If the label is worn off, it clumps, specks, or becomes dry or smells bad, and you're still holding onto it for one last hopeful application, it's time to throw it out!

Foundation has a shelf life of 18-24 months. I know at some point you've run out of foundation and you remembered there was that one foundation you bought and hated and threw in your bag full of lost but not forgotten cosmetics! You open it only to find that it's com-pletely separated. What do you do? You shake it and hope for the best. STOP! Gross. You wouldn't eat old food, so why would you put old cosmetics on your gorgeous face? Don't do it.

PROTIPS

32 ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE

MICHELLE AXTELL SHARES SOME OF HER BEAUTY SECRETS

Powder can last up to two years unless it becomes dry or has an odor other than its original fragrance. You can protect your powder from contamination by being sure to change your sponge or powder puff after every application. Sponges are a haven for breeding bacteria and the fastest way to pass on germs. You know the film that builds up on top of your powder or on your sponge? Let me formally introduce you, film; meet bacteria. Now that you've met, throw it out! Bacteria on your face is NOT a good look! Lip Pencils will last around a year. Dip in alcohol often to kill germs. Eye pencils typically last three months. Always sharpen or dip in alcohol after each use to kill those pesky germs. Eye Shadow and Blush can last up to three years before it will dry and lose pigment. To keep it fresh, wipe off with alcohol. I know that this cleansing method may seem a bit tedious, but you don't want bacteria on your face any more than you would want it in your mouth. Brushes will usually tell you when it's time to say goodbye once they start to look like fans and the tips become colored. Keep brushes clean with brush cleaner or baby shampoo. In a desperate situation you can use soap and water but soap and water has a tendency to dry out brush

bristles and reduce the longevity of your brushes. I recommend cleaning your

brushes once a week. Also, make sure to dry your brushes by placing the handles flat on a counter and letting your bristles hang over the edge. This allows air flow and leaves your brushes nice and fluffy and reduces any excess soap residue clinging to your bristles.

ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE 33

1. If you have a drawer full of half-used lipsticks, don't throw them away and buy more. Take a pillbox and dig out the lipstick colors and put them in each square. You'll have a great carrying case and palette to create new colors like the pros do.

2. You can use a great lipstick color as a cream blush. Choose lighter shades and blend on after foundation but before powder.

3. No need to buy one shimmer high-lighter shadow for the eyes and another for the face. A single shade serves both purposes.

4. When your mascara is dry and not applying well, run it under hot water for five minutes and it will be good as new.

5. Brow gel is a waste of money. Use regular hair gel on a brow brush or old toothbrush for the exact same effect.

Money Saving TipsMichelle's

Michelle's 6. For a whiter smile, brush teeth with a bit of baking soda.

7. Instead of expensive facial scrubs, use a small handful of regular white sugar. Just lather up your face with a cleanser, then scrub in the sugar using your finger tips in small circular motions.

8. Q-tips work just as well as brushes. However, for really good, inexpensive brushes, visit your local art supply store.

9. When your favorite shadows or blushes break, don't throw them away. Put the remains in empty film canisters and use them like loose powders. 10. If you want to bring back the original shine on your makeup containers, use Pledge furniture polish to shine a faded container and make it look new!

11. Put a small piece of tape on the back of containers, and record the date you purchased it. This will ensure that you will not use them after the recom-mended expiration date.

12. Get free samples where you can. Department stores might offer them on certain days, or on request, and you can also get them online. Just don’t be tricked into expensive “freebies” where you have to make a big minimum purchase to get a free gloss kit: A “$30 value!” isn’t worth spending $50. Some sites like Ulta.com and Sephora.com will give you freebies with any order – which means they actually are free.

As the client, the worst thing you can do is be late or cancel at the last minute. Not only is tardiness disre-spectful to the stylist, but this will also make them late for the rest of their clients for that day. Canceling at the

last minute with out an extremely valid excuse also puts the styl-ist in a bind because there is no longer any time to try and fill that void and now your stylist has lost money. And if you are the last appointment for the day, forget about any special treatment be-cause now you've made them wait around for nothing. The grace period for tardiness is fifteen minutes. After that, most stylists will make you reschedule your appointment. So, if at all possible, you should be at least ten minutes early. Therefore you will have enough time to get in and settled before your stylist takes you.

Stylists love their clients, but they also have bills to pay. If you want the best service, it pays to be generous. For stylists, tips should be fifteen to twenty percent of the

total cost of your bill. Tips are a significant portion of their income. And yes, salon owners who are also stylists appreciate tips as well. Tips should be in cash whenever possible because some credit card companies charge a fee for card tips. That means the stylist actually gets less money than you intended.

You are a walking advertisement for your stylist. You are representing your stylist, so it's in their best interest for you to look good. So keep that in mind when you are out. People will notice when your

hair looks good; and nine out of ten times they will compli-ment you and and ask where you get your hair done and who did it. Most of my business comes from referrals. New clients always tell me they met an existing client and they were kind enough to share my information with them. I always make a mental note to give my clients my business cards so that they are well prepared the next time they get stopped.

Stylists are trained professionals. We spend a lot of time and money on our continued education. So when you go to your next appointment, try to be realistic about your

expectations/ideas for your hair. For example: if you have been coloring your hair blue black out of the box, most stylists will tell you that going blonde will take at least six months to a year. Or

if you have enough hair for three people, a short funky bob will end up looking like you have a

triangle on your head. A longer layered look would be more appropriate. It is your

job to help you look your best, so let us do our thing.

Kids haircuts aren't child play. When people bring their children in for cuts, it's quite the experience. Along with being their stylists, we also become their entertainment. Many children get antsy once in

the stylists chair and it is our responsibility to make them feel comfortable and we do so by any means possible. Therefore think about that next you take your child in, why should their haircut cost any less than yours!

ACTIVE FITNESSwith DAN MASSEY

Hey guys and girls! I’m back again and this month and I wanted to give out some diet tips since it’s starting to warm up and we all want to be in shape just in time for the beach. Every time I get asked “Dan, what can I take to lose weight?” My response is always, “what do you eat on an average day?”  The usual response I receive is that they eat right but still can’t seem to lose the last bit of body fat. Well, I have news for you. If you were eating right you would be losing the bodyfat.  When it comes to losing body fat the number one thing you need to nail down is your diet. Diets are the foundation on which all your weight loss goals can be based on. A vague description of “eating well” doesn’t quite cut it. You need to find the balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat that meets your needs. Even if you eat the wrong amounts of the right foods, either too much or not enough, will completely throw off your balance.  So, how much protein, fat and carbohydrates should I be eating?

ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE 43

The answer is actually pretty simple guys, but I’ll break each category down one at a time so you can better understand how this process is done.

First I want to talk about the protein. This is the most beneficial ingredient in any kind of weight loss. Whether you are male or female you need to bring in 1 gram of protein per lean body mass daily. If you don’t know your lean body mass index it’s usually your desired bodyweight. So, let’s review. A person that weighs 200 lbs that wants lose 50 lbs to weigh 150 lbs needs to bring in 150 grams of protein per day, but not all at once. Next you take this total and divide it by 5, which will give you a total of 30 grams per meal 5 times daily.  Next, I’d like to talk about carbohydrate intake. This is very important because the muscles need carbs to train hard, and you need to train hard to burn calories. The amounts of carbs you bring in will vary depending on how an individual trains. To make this easy what I’d like you to do is bring in about a palm size serving of your favorite complex carb with your protein meals 1-3. The last two meals (4-5) need to be just the protein portions and veggies. Consume the very last meal right before bedtime. I recommend Intek brand protein powder complex. I love this brand because it’s an outstanding blend of four different proteins which allows you get a cascading layered delivery of protein to the body. This is especially good for before bedtime because the body needs amino all throughout the night to keep your metabolism going. Lastly, I want to talk about bringing fat into your diet. Whenever

44 ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE

I tell someone to bring in fat when trying to lose weight I get crazy looks, but let me explain how this process works. When you eat fat in your diet, your body breaks it down and uses it as fuel. (Don’t worry, the fat you eat doesn’t add to your bodyfat like most people assume). Fat is also essential for life so if you cut fat from your diet, your body desperately wants to hold on existing bodyfat so it can survive. Simply put, if you don’t bring in fat, you can’t burn fat! Ok so now for the typically question, “how much fat do I need, and when do I take fat in?” The answer to this question is to take in 2 servings of an essential fat complex (efa) daily, with food meals that don’t contain carbs. Doing this will force the body to either use the carbs eaten earlier in the day for fuel, rather than shift to use existing bodyfat for the remainder of the evening. Well, that is all I have for you this month. This is a universal setup

as far as how to eat daily to lose weight. If you’re interested in a fully involved

customized meal plan (for FREE) just stop by the shop and we will be glad

to help you get started with your weight loss plan. Almost any product can be sampled in the store so you can rest assured

you will get the product that is just for you. We’re located in the Harbor Village Shopping Center near Steinmart on San Pablo and Atlantic; hope to see you soon. Until next

month, train hard!

ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE 45

Have you reached a point where you can’t seem to lose any more weight? Don’t throw in the towel: here are some tips can help you reach your goal weight. No matter how dedicated you are to losing weight, you will hit a plateau at some point in your diet. This is when weight <http://www.everydayhealth.com/weight/calories.aspx> loss stalls and the numbers on the scale just don’t go down, even though you are still following your diet and exercise routine. Weight plateaus are the most frustrating thing , but you need to know that weight loss is 70 percent diet and 30 percent exercise. For any given dieter, making small changes in either realm can get the numbers back in motion. Try these tips for moving the scale in the right direction again — you may not even need all of them to start seeing a difference: RUTHLESSLY CLEAN UP YOUR DIET. The six deadly sins of food are: fast food, salt ,butter, cheese, fried food, and sugar. These

things will keep you from making progress. Examine your diet to make sure you’re being honest with yourself. You lose the right to complain if you aren’t eating what you are supposed to. SKIP THE ALCOHOL. Alcohol not only adds calories to your diet, but it effectively slows your metabolism and reduces your motiva-tion to work out and diet. EAT MORE MEALS. Eating five or six low-calorie meals throughout the day helps stops cravings and controls overeating. The theory is that spreading out your calories helps regulate blood sugar levels and prevents the feelings of deprivation that often lead to un-healthy food choices. GO LOW-GLYCEMIC. If you still have refined carbs in your diet, get rid of them, especially before a workout. Eating a meal containing low-glycemic carbs about three hours before a workout results in more fat burned than a meal containing refined carbs. Vary your exercise routine. “If you’re coming to the gym and you’re doing the same thing every time, change your workout,” . Run today, lift weights tomorrow, swim on the next day, take a Boot Camp class the day after. TRY HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT). Working out at different levels of intensity is thought to increase weight loss. Weight-train for about 20 minutes, exercise at 85 percent of their maximum heart rate for about 10 minutes, do more weight train-ing for about 10 minutes, and then finish with moderate cardio exercises.

STRENGTH TRAINING. Use weight training to build muscle. Each pound of muscle burns about 50 calories a day at rest. According to a national survey of more than 6,000 adults, about 19 percent of people who were successful with weight loss included weight training in their workouts.

USE A HEART RATE MONITOR. It keeps you honest about the intensity of your workout. Figure out your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. Target your workouts so your heart rate stays between 65 and 85 percent of your maximum most of the time.

DRINK WATER. If you are not drinking enough water during the day, your body may be retaining water, adding to the num-bers on the scale.

EXERCISE FOR MORE THAN 30 MINUTES EVERY DAY. People who exercise at least 30 minutes every day are more successful with weight loss. Try to get in at least this much ex-ercise — and increasing the time you spend working out every day will increase the caloric burn.

GET THE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE ON BOARD. Most people don’t sabotage your diet on purpose, but their food-related acts of love could be undermining your weight loss.

ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE 61

Jacksonville was treated to the best motorcross racers in the nation when 500 truckloads of dirt were sculpted into an AMA Supercross track at Everbank Field.   Though Tallahassee native James Stewart made it to the main event, hr did not finish.  His spectacular crash ended with him leaving on a stretcher. Point leader Ryan Villopoto crashed twice in a qualifying heat and did not make the main event, however Trey Canard won the premier supercross main event. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day in Jacksonville. The fans were able to meet the riders and get autographs prior to the race.  You can follow the tour on the speed channel.  Make sure you make it out when they return next year—you will love it!!
