IntroductionSignage is important because it shows the community what they can expect to be built on the site, how long the project will run for and if they might be impacted. It presents information about the project to the community in an effective, professional and uniform way. This guide has been produced to ensure that signage is used consistently across ACT Government capital works.

These guidelines apply to all capital works projects, including upgrades and government infrastructure, undertaken by the ACT Government.

Usage of signage is determined by the type or cost of the project, or its public profile and interest to the community.

Sign typesThree sign types are specified below.

Project Cost Sign Type Sign Size$25,000 to $500,000 Sign Type A

(see page 7 for full specifications)1200 (h) x 900 (w) mm

$500,000 to $10 million Sign type B (see page 8 for full specifications)

1200 (h) x 900 (w) mm

$10 million and over Sign Type C (see page 10 for full specifications)

1800 (h) x 2400 (w) mm

Less than $25,000 Short term A3 size

ConstructionSigns are to be free standing, with an aluminium face 1.6 mm in thickness and mounted on a galvanised steel post frame. The bottom of the sign should be 600 mm from the ground.

The signs should be able to be reused/recycled (for example, adhesive peel face that can be printed per project and re-applied to the aluminium structure). The finish on the signage material should be made as graffiti resistant as possible.

For artwork preparation please contact Publishing Services at [email protected]

Design guidance and artwork templates are available from the ACT Government Branding Website.

Please visit sharedservices/ACTGovt/Branding/signage.html

Corflute signage can be produced instead of aluminium if the length of the project does not

exceed two months. (See short term signage information on page 12).

Page 5: ACT Government Signage Guidelines for Capital Works · Sign type ‘A’ and ‘B’ – sample plan & elevation 10 Sign type ‘C’: projects over $10M – design, usage and specifications

5ACT Government Capital Works Signage Guidelines

Usage and designSignage is required where the construction site has public visibility. Multiple signs may be erected where a site has more than one entry point. For example, a major roadwork project where a sign will be erected at each end.

In addition to signs, hoarding or fence wrap is also used for project identification. It is useful in promoting government construction projects, particularly when situated adjacent to high traffic (vehicle and pedestrian).

Signage must be erected as soon as possible when a site is identified. All signage should be checked regularly for accuracy and wear and tear, and updated when necessary.

TypefaceThe Montserrat typeface used on the signage is consistent and identifiable as part of the overall ACT Government branding. It is a free open licence font. The typeface should not be substituted.

Montserrat typeface examples:

MONTSERRAT REGULAR HEADINGS: LETTER WIDTH 92% Descriptive text: letter width 100%

MONTSERRAT LIGHT HEADINGS: LETTER WIDTH 100%, Descriptive text: letter width 100%

Signage should be sized to be suitably seen from

a distance. Design the text and the imagery to suit the

positioning of your sign. Consider safety and ease

of reading.

All signage should be sized suitably so it can be seen from a distance. For example, signage for a major arterial road

upgrade should be clearly read by drivers.

ColourBackground colour (for sign type ‘B’ and ‘C’, hoarding and fence wrap) is to feature the colour scheme from the design templates.

Colours can be created using any two similar colours from the primary and secondary colour palettes. For any one application, only one gradient may be used as a highlight or to add interest to a background. See page 16 of the ACT Government brand guidelines for further information with regards to accessiblity and colour use.

The background uses a gradient blend, please see below for some colour samples to use:

Approval of signageSignage is an important channel for us to inform the community about ACT Government projects. It is an essential part of public information campaigns relating to capital works. All designs for signage must be in line with these guidelines.

If your sign falls into category B and C please forward to CMTEDD Communications and Engagement Division for review. Hoarding, billboard and fence wrap should also be approved by CMTEDD Communications and Engagement Division.

Any departure from the guidelines must be approved by the relevant Senior Executive (similar to how public speaking/media interview requests are approved), and endorsed by the Peer Advice Panel. Please contact [email protected] for further information.

The principal contractor is responsible for signage and must seek ACT Government approval prior to fabrication and installation.

Co-brandingFederal Government involvementAny text shown in these guidelines relating to federally funded projects is mandatoryfor those fully or partially funded by the Commonwealth. These are generally high value and/or high profile projects.

Commonwealth funded projects will often require Australian Government signage (for example Roads to Recovery or Black Spot Projects). Please refer to co-branding guidelines on pages 16 and 17 for further information.

External logosThe inclusion of external logos (eg. supplier logos) on ACT Government signage is generally not permitted. Special allowances may be obtained by contacting the Communications and Engagement Division, Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate at [email protected].

Please see pages 16 and 17

14ACT Government Capital Works Signage Guidelines

Billboards, hoarding and fence wrap Billboards and hoarding are a useful way to inform the community about large and high profile projects, and may double as perimeter or project fencing.

Fence wrap is often attached to metal perimeter fencing of a project. It may be necessary to cover the entire length of fencing, depending on the project.

Works that are fully obscured from public view do not require hoarding or fence wrap.

Design for billboards, hoarding and fence wrapContent on billborads, hoarding and fence wrap should tell a clear story about the project being undertaken, and the benefit it will bring to the Canberra community. You should use relevant imagery or artist impressions, use plain english descriptions about what government is delivering, and provide a simple url for more imformation.

Signage content should: > paint a picture of the project being undertaken and succinctly outline benefits it will bring to the community

> use plain English for project names and descriptions

> select imagery or artist impressions to tell the story

> steer clear of government jargon and vague acronyms

> be flexible, but on brand using the guidance in this document

> take location and context into consideration. Think about what people will be doing when they consume the information, for example – driving past, walking past, waiting for a bus or tram, or looking from a distance?
