There were a total of 104 candidates who reached the required standard, 14 who did not reach the standard in any of the three elements and 64 who have been offered the chance to re-take the one or two elements in which they did not reach the required standard. The comments from the assessors have highlighted the fact that, again, many candidates have not given the specialist portfolio assignments and the core assignment the attention required. This would appear to be the case, particularly, with candidates taking the Advocacy, Ancillary Relief, Children and Cohabitation specialist portfolio assignments. The SFLA Accreditation Scheme is not, and is not intended to be, easy. It is designed to identify the truly expert family lawyer and should only, therefore be undertaken by those willing to commit the time 46 and energy into completing the assignments in an expert manner. The assignments should show an ordered, logical mind, skills in analysing the facts and law, good writing and presentation, as well as knowledge and experience of the law. Candidates are given 8 weeks to complete the specialist portfolios - which should be ample time to consider the set case study, do any research necessary, plan the answers, write the answers and check them to ensure that every point has been covered, and to complete the two examples of cases dealt with. What happens is that many candidates decide to leave this until the weekend of the core assignment, thinking that they will be able to do it all in a weekend. This is not recommended by the Accreditation Management Committee. On the core assignment, the most common criticisms were: Question 1 on the matter of a child's religious upbringing and circumcision - failure to mention specific issue orders and Re j; on the threat of taking the child to Turkmenistan - failure to check Family Law to see whether Turkmenistan is a Convention country; and on the grandmother'S wish to apply for residence - failure to mention need for leave to make an application Question 2 on ancillary relief - failure to mention the Piglowska and White cases, limited discussion of pensions, clean break, the Question 4 on Family Law Act, Part II - some candidates still got the time limits wrong and some did not put forward ideas for improving the Act. Copies of past papers with guidelines for the answers are available from Mary I'Anson for £25. The third round is now under way. If you are interested in applying for the fourth round, the timetable is as follows: Deadline for notifying Mary I'Anson - 3 August 2000.
