Current Structure of Public Health in MissouriCurrent Structure of Public Health in Missouri

There are 114 Local Public Health Agencies (LPHAs) in Missouri, theyThere are 114 Local Public Health Agencies (LPHAs) in Missouri, they range from large urban departments to small rural departments.

89 are operated by five member elected Boards and in part are funded by a “mil” tax whose rate is approved by voters the others are incorporateda “mil” tax whose rate is approved by voters, the others are incorporated into their County Government.

LPHAs may also receive funds from federal or state contracts, grants and/or fees.

As a result, sustainable funding is often an issue for LPHAs as well as the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services..

There has been a lack of a unified voice for Public Health in Missouri. There has been limited collaboration among PH, Academia, hospitals, 

other public and private healthcare providers, and community‐based organization.g
