Accelerated Competency-Based Education in Primary Care UC Davis School of Medicine Mark Henderson, MD, Project Team The Accelerated Competency-based Education in Primary Care (ACE-PC) program is a partnership between the UC Davis School of Medicine, Kaiser Permanente – Northern California and the American Medical Association. Students who are confident that they want to pursue a career in Primary Care Internal Medicine or Family Medicine have the opportunity to complete their undergraduate medical education in three years, instead of four, and are granted a conditional acceptance into residency upon acceptance into the program. Advice for Other Institutions • Set clear, written milestones with off-ramps to traditional program • Regular academic and personal check-ins with program faculty mentors Future Plans • Establish partnerships with other specialties: Psychiatry, Pediatrics • Broaden GME offerings to include additional Northern California programs • Study academic and clinical performance outcomes of ACE-PC students compared to traditional (4-year) students Program Curriculum Program Contact https://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/mdprogram/ACE-PC/about.html Mark Henderson, MD, [email protected] Program Contact: Marjorie Westervelt, [email protected] Program Status & Accomplishments • 26 students accepted into the program (2014-2017) • First set of 2017 graduates (N=6) now in residency at 4 GME partner programs • Two-thirds of students are URM • Two-thirds of students self-identify as disadvantaged • $1 million grant from American Medical Association • California AB 1838 allows graduates of LCME accredited medical schools to be eligible for licensure in California Admissions • All applicants must apply to the UC Davis School of Medicine through the American Medical College Application Service by October 1. • Applicants invited to complete the UCDSOM Secondary Application will have an opportunity to indicate their interest in the ACE-PC program. • Accepted candidates will be screened by the Program Director and invited for a panel interview comprised of UCD faculty and directors from partner residency programs.
