Make a plan!

• 3 basic phases

• Plan

• Migrate

• Verify

• Plan

• Identify applications and any dependencies

• Make sure hardware, including network, are

sufficient

• Develop scenarios

• Have a back out plan

• Test and Document

• Usually can be done non-disruptively

• Uses host resources

• Volume management software in the OS

• Logical Volume Manager (LVM)

• Storage Spaces

• Other OS utilities

• Copy

• Backup and restore

AIX


• Create and map LUN(s) to server

• Verify AIX sees new volumes

• Create logical volume mirror

• Synchronize

• Split mirror

Linux


• Create and map LUN(s) to server

• Verify Linux sees new volumes

• Format and add to existing VG

• Migrate

• Remove old volume from the VG

Windows

• Logical Disk Manager or Storage Spaces

• LDM

• Configure and Map

• Use LDM to set volume online

• Create mirror

• Synchronize

• Split

• Storage Spaces

• Configure and map

• Add new disk to same pool as existing disk

• Retire the source Physical Disk

• Repair the Virtual Disk

• Wait for it!

• Remove Source PD

• VMware storage vMotion

• Configure and map LUN

• Verify ESX can access the volume

• Create data store on the volume

• Migrate virtual machines to new datastore

Image mode

• Brings in, or sends out an image of what the

volume really looks like

• Is disruptive, as host must stop talking to the

volume thru the storage controller, and talk to

it thru FlashSystem/SVC

• Migration wizard walks you thru, step by step

Vdisk mirror

• Similar to LVM case we talked about

earlier

• Vdisks can be disparate types

• Can be sped up, slowed down,

paused, stopped

Vdisk migration

• May be faster than mirroring

• Cannot be modified once started

• Backout plan may be difficult

Beware of unintended consequences

• Migrations can affect either or both storage system

• Newer system can hammer older system

• Migrations reads on source/ writes on target can affect other (PRODUCTION!!) IO

• Plan, test, then implement

Intra cluster migration

• Non-disruptive volume move (NDVM) between I/O Groups

• Redistribute workload

• Migrate data to another I/O Group

Mdisk migration

• Makes it very simple to bring new storage in

• Typically used in SVC

• Moves extents from old storage to new storage

Copy Services

• Check the compatibility cross reference

• Requires outage

• Can be done at long distances

• Another way of moving out of SVC, without using image mode
