    The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn nearGreensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina,North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws.The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came on May 8, 1953, duringthe Southern Conferences annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met

    in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name officially became the AtlanticCoast Conference. The University of Virginia was added later in the year.South Carolina would withdraw from the league in 1971, but over the years the ACC continuedto expand, adding Georgia Tech, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Miami, and Boston College.

    Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sonsof Boston's Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher education tobe founded in the city of Boston. BC was the most recent school to join theACC in 2005.

    The University of Maryland opened in 1856 as an agricultural school nine

    miles north of Washington, D.C., on land belonging to Charles Calvert, adescendant of Lord Baltimore. Maryland has been called the school thatCurley Byrd built, for he was its QB, then coach, AD, assistant to thepresident, vice-president, and finally its president. Maryland captured itsfirst NCAA Basketball Championship in 2002.

    The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson and isone of three things on his tombstone for which he wanted to be remembered.James Madison and James Monroe were on the board of governors in theearly years. Nestled in the town of Charlottesville, UVA was a national forcein the early 1980s with 74 center Ralph Sampson, a 3-time National Playerof the Year.

    Virginia Tech was established in 1872 as an all-male military school

    dedicated to the original land-grant mission of teaching agriculture andengineering. Located in SW Virginia on a plateau between the Blue Ridge andAlleghany Mountains, the campus consists of 334 buildings and 20 miles ofsidewalks. Not as acclaimed as the schools football team, Tech basketball

    has still been a tough opponent in recent seasons.

    Clemson University is nestled in the foothills of the Blue RidgeMountains near the Georgia border. The school is built around Fort Hill,the plantation home of John C. Calhoun, Vice President to AndrewJackson. Football remains king at Clemson, but the basketball programhas improved significantly in the past few seasons.

    Florida State University is one of 10 universities of the State University

    System of Florida. Its Tallahassee campus has been the site of aninstitution of higher education longer than any other site in the state.Upon joining the ACC in 1991, FSUs basketball program saw its

    greatest success with future NBA players Charlie Ward, Bob Sura, andSam Cassell leading the way.

    Next to I-85 in downtown Atlanta stands Georgia Institute of Technology,

    founded in 1885. The schools famed Ramblin Wreck fight song appearedalmost as soon as the school opened, and is known in this country andbeyond. In fact, Richard Nixon and Nikita Krushchev sang it when they met inMoscow in 1959. Tech rambled all the way to the NCAA title game in 2004.

    The University of Miami was chartered in 1925 by a group of citizenswho felt an institution was needed for the development of theiryoung community. After many lean years due to hurricanes andeconomic depressions, Miami survived, becoming one of the nation'smost distinguished private universities. The basketball team plays atthe Bank United Center, which opened in 2003.

    The University of North Carolina, located in Chapel Hill, has been called the perfectcollege town. Its inception in 1795 makes it one of the oldest schools in the nation, andits nickname of Tar Heels stems from the tar pitch and turpentine that were the states

    principal industry. UNC has achieved remarkable success on the hardwood led by thelikes of Michael Jordan, Phil Ford, James Worthy, Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, andTyler Hansbrough.

    Duke University was founded in 1924 by tobacco magnate James B. Duke asa memorial to his father, Washington Duke. This private school is famousprimarily for two reasons: strong academic reputation, and mens basketball.

    Under coach Mike Krzyzewski, Duke has captured 4 national titles, includingthis past April against the Butler Bulldogs.

    NC State is located in the state capital of Raleigh. It opened in 1889 as a land-

    grant agricultural and mechanical school. An unhappy fan in 1922 said Statefootball players behaved like a pack of wolves, and the term that was coinedin derision became a badge of honor. The Wolfpack won national titles in 1974and 1983. The latter title, over Houston is widely considered one of thebiggest upsets in tournament history.

    WAKE FOREST

    Originally located in Wake County, Wake Forest University was moved toWinston-Salem in 1956 on a site donated by Charles H. and MaryReynolds Babcock. While small in enrollment figures, Wake has been bigon the basketball stage in recent years. NBA stars Tim Duncan and ChrisPaul are among the many strong players who called the university home.
