city of calgary UpdatesStay Smart About Parking

bans This WinterAfter heavy snowfall, The City may declare a parking ban along snow routes. Snow routes are located on collector roads and most bus routes, and can be identified throughout the city by blue signs with a white snowflake.

The snow route parking ban program supports snow plowing operations by removing parked vehicles from the streets, and allowing crews to clear snow from Calgary roads more efficiently and effectively. During a ban, parking will be temporarily restricted on designated snow routes for up to 72 hours.

HoW SnoW roUTeS WorK:

• The City will issue an advisory when a parking ban will be implemented within the next 1-2 days.

• The City will declare a parking ban is in effect when crews finish plowing Priority One routes, but before they start on Priority Two routes (collector roads, bus routes, etc.) Parking bans will be in effect for up to 72 hours or until The City declares they have been lifted.

• Snow clearing operations will be ongoing. Parked cars must be moved from snow routes when a parking ban is called. Vehicles that remain parked on these roads during the ban are subject to enforcement, up to and including a parking ticket and tow.

Stay informed about parking bans this winter by subscribing to email alerts at Calgary.ca/snow, following @yyctransport on Twitter, calling 311 and listening to the automated message, and watching local news or listening to the radio.

Winter can be a challenging time for people to get around their neighbourhood. A person with reduced mobility, a parent with a stroller or even just someone carrying bags from their car to their door can easily slip on ice and snow on sidewalks and pathways. Consider helping your neighbours and community by being a Snow Angel and keeping walkways clear of snow and ice!

The Snow Angels campaign encourages Calgarians to look out for those who may need assistance with snow removal. Now in its 13 year, it’s one way that community members can come together and help each other out.

If you, or someone you know has been helped by a Snow Angel, call 311 or go on line to recognize them and nominate them prizes.

For more information visit calgary.ca/SnowAngels.

Be a Snow Angel!

THE COMMON REDPOLL is an energetic, little songbird with a flaming red cap, black throat, whitish rump and streaked back. This songbird a highly sociable, noisy, chattering bird that travels in large flocks of several hundred birds. It is one of the finch family’s most northern breeders and is found circumpolar.

fun facts: You can find the Common Redpoll from April through September in the Yukon, Northwest and Nunavut Territories, and even across into Newfoundland and Labrador. The Common Redpoll migrates south into the lower Canadian provinces in late autumn.

In Alberta, we are likely to see the Common Redpoll in the winter when they might forage as large groups in weedy fields or small tree lots.

Sightings can be scare when there are

The Common Redpoll

winter food shortages in their normal wintering range. This forces them to go even farther south, a behaviour called an “irruption.” Common Redpolls tend to exhibit this irruptive behaviour every second year to match the production cycle of catkins on birch and alder trees.

This songbird likes the small high-energy seeds of birch and alder trees and can eat 42% of their body mass every day!

If you want to attract them to your yard you can plant birch trees, but we city folks are most likely to see them at a backyard feeder in the winter where they favour nyger seed offerings.

If you find an injured or orphaned wild bird or animal in distress, please contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society hotline at 403-239-2488, for tips, instructions and advice, or look at the website at www.calgarywildlife.org for more information.

Family Day:This holiday was first observed in Alberta in 1990, followed by Saskatchewan in 2007 and Ontario in 2008. On May 28, 2012, the BC government announced that Family Day would be observed on the second Monday in February each year, starting February 11, 2013.

What do people do on Family day?On Family Day, many people plan and take part in activities aimed at the whole family. These include visiting art exhibitions, watching movies, skating on outdoor ice rinks, playing board games and taking part in craft activities. Some communities plan special public events, and art galleries and museums may have reduced price or free entry.

As the weather is usually very cold in February, hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies are popular snacks. Other people use the long weekend as an opportunity for a short winter break or to travel to visit family members or friends. As Family Day falls on the same date as National Heritage Day, some people use the day to explore their personal heritage and family history.

public liFeIn the provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan, many people have a day off work and schools are generally closed on Family Day. Many businesses and organizations are closed, but post offices may be open. Public transport services may run to their usual or reduced timetables.

backgroundFamily Day was first held in Canada in the province of Alberta in 1990. It is supposed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who founded Alberta, and give workers the opportunity to spend more time with their families. Family Day was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007 and in Ontario in 2008. One of the reasons for introducing Family Day was that there was a long period when there were no holidays from New Year's Day until Good Friday.

Holidays to celebrate families are also held in other places around the globe. In the Australian Capital Territory, the first Tuesday of November is known as Family and Community Day. In South Africa, the day after Easter Sunday is Family Day.

Constituency boundaries review:In the coming months, the province’s Electoral Boundaries Commission will undertake a review of the electoral constituencies. It’s the first time the boundaries have been reviewed since 2009/2010. The province says Alberta’s population has increased by more than 20 per cent in the last eight years. As a result, we need to review our provincial constituency boundaries prior to the next provincial election. Provincial law directs the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission to review the existing boundaries and names for the 87 electoral constituencies and report to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta by October 31, 2017.The Commission will consider the following in making recommendations to the Legislative Assembly:

• Your input• Population figures and relative population density

throughout the province• Common community interests• Existing municipal and natural boundaries• Effective representation

Albertans can take part in the process by attending a public hearing (See dates and times @ abebc.ca), providing a written submission and by following the Commission’s progress on social media with #AlbertaEBC.While this is an important process, I am worried about gerrymandering by the NDP government. Even though Calgary Hays is an urban riding, I hope you will agree giving everyone an equal voice matters. The fear is NDP will give rural Alberta much less representation as they have little support in rural Alberta. If you are concerned, please contact the committee via the methods above or send me a note to forward to them.

Happy Valentine’s Day:Valentine’s Day is more than flowers and gifts. Sometimes, it is about spending time with your love/friends/family. Just wanted to wish you a wonderful Valentine’s Day together. Enjoy!

February 20, 2017, Alberta Family Day: Fun facts I found in different articles about Alberta Family Day:

• Former Lieutenant Governor Helen Hunley was responsible for proclaiming the holiday. The Premier of Alberta at the time that helped make the day a statutory holiday was Don

Getty in 1989. Alberta was the first province in Canada to have a statutory holiday in February. The holiday always falls on the third Monday of February so it will coincide with the American holiday, President’s Day.• It helps break-up the hectic pace of our lives and lets us take a moment with our family

What Do People Do?

• On Family Day, many people plan and take part in activities aimed at the whole family. These include visiting art exhibitions, watching movies, skating on outdoor ice rinks, playing board games and taking part in craft activities. Some communities plan special public events, and art galleries and museums may have reduced price or free entry.

• As the weather is usually very cold in February, hot chocolate and freshly baked cookies are popular snacks. Other people use the long weekend as an opportunity for a short winter break or to travel to visit family members or friends. As Family Day falls on the same date as National Heritage Day (except in British Columbia), some people use the day to explore their personal heritage and family history

Family Day gives families the chance to spend time together.Family Day is observed to celebrate “the importance of families and family life to people and their communities.”So what do people do—what do you do, if you have the day off—on Family Day?

budget Consultations: The NDP have scheduled “budget consultations” which you can only get into by being invited by – wait for it – an NDP MLA. That is correct. They have turned a taxpayer funded exercise into a completely partisan process even though the 50 billion dollars plus they will spend next year belongs to all Albertans and to no single or any political party. I only tell you this so you know of the decision your government has made.

In order to include you in the process I am interested in your opinion on our PC party holding a true public consultation on the budget. I invite your input.

Cleaning and washing clothes are a constant household chore during the winter months. Kids are always tracking in mud or snow, there’s dust

building up from keeping windows closed, and winter sports laundry is always piling up.

Don’t let it get you down, however. There are many ways you can keep your house tidy, starting with these three tips to ease the winter cleaning blues:

• Keep things organized: It’s easy to leave that scarf on the ground, or boots at the bottom of the stairs. The problem is one or two items can easily turn into 10, meaning a messy house in no time. Encourage the family to clean as they go by putting items in their proper place. This will keep the house looking clean and tidy for longer.

• Get everyone to pitch in: Cleaning should never be only one person’s responsibility. Encourage everyone in the family to ‘own’ a cleaning chore. If each person feels responsible for their family tasks, a lot more of the house will be kept clean.

•Wash in cold water: To keep energy costs down and your laundry fresh, switch to a detergent that is formulated to perform in cold water.

With these ideas under your belt, winter cleaning costs can be reduced and the laundry room can become a sweet smelling headache-free zone.

Organ Donation e-Petition:Thousands of Canadians are sitting on organ donation wait lists at any given time, and sadly, many will never actually receive a life-saving organ donation. While every nine out of ten Canadians supports organ and tissue donation, only a quarter have taken the time to register as a donor. Consequently, MP Len Webber tabled bill C-316, which would ask Canadians on their annual tax return if they consent to being added to their provincial or territorial organ donor registry the same way we ask citizens whether they wish to be added to the national list of electors.

Since every Canadian over 18 legally must complete a tax return, this legislative change is a simple, cost-effective way of updating organ donor registries throughout the country. It has the potential to save many lives. The information provided to the registries will be only one way; whether you agree or not to become an organ donor will have no bearing whatsoever on your income taxes.

In order to raise awareness on this proposal as well as the broad support amongst Canadians I have created an online petition. ePetition 642 already has support from every province across Canada, but in order to send a clear message to Parliament that this important bill needs to pass, we need as many Canadians to sign it and pass it on to a friend to sign it as well. Please go to petition642.ca and sign the petition to support this great initiative and help save Canadian lives.

Spiritual Prosperity with Rev. Bruce R.

Elvis Sheasby

If we can be open to the mystery of spiritual growth beyond our human lives, perhaps we can be inspired to live with the possibilities of growth as we live in this world.

Exercise Your Growth!1. Consider some seeds that have been planted in your life by others, or that you can plant in others’ lives, that have possibilities for growth.

2. Consider how accepting that we are all imperfect can help lead you to the divine act of forgiveness.

3. Join me on Sundays at 10:30 at the Delta Calgary South for Your Grace Land where we focus on a positive faith and living with Inspirational Core Values including Growth.

Bruce Reinhold Elvis Sheasby is a life coachwith a passion for helping others connect

I was intrigued to learn from my daughter’s orthodontist that the position of the jaw can only be moved when there is room, when the bones are not too compressed while a youth is still growing. So often, nature reveals - on the physical level - principals which have an application on the emotional, mental, and spiritual planes. Movement requires space, and growth requires room to grow.

None of us are perfect, and that means, precisely, that all of us have room to grow. Acknowledging our own imperfection goes a long way to accept the imperfection in others, and even to

consider forgiveness of oneself and others as a bridge to spiritual growth.

Over the years, in my role as minister, I have presided at many funeral and memorial services and, often, have been asked to sing a favorite song of mine, In the bulb there is a flower. It’s a positive song by Natalie Sleeth, written when she was pondering the imminent death of a loved one. Incorporating the words of T.S. Eliot, “in our end is our beginning” the song reflects on growth in nature as a paradigm for understanding spiritual growth, even beyond the physical body.

“In the bulb there is a flower, in the seed an apple tree, in cocoons a hidden promise,

butterflies will soon be free. In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something

God alone can see. In our end is our beginning, in our time infinity. In our doubt, there is believing, in our time eternity. In our

death, a resurrection, at the last a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God

alone can see.”

In February, with the celebration of Valentine’s Day, thoughts turn to love and other kind feelings. February 14th is also International Book Giving Day which is a volunteer-led

initiative that aims to get books into the hands of as many children as possible.

Three ways you might celebrate international book Giving Day: • Gift a book to a child in your life • Leave a book in a waiting room or at a bus stop for children to read (and keep) • Donate a new or gently-used book to a local hospital, shelter or to Calgary reads book bank that helps get books into the hands of Calgary children who have few or none of their own at home.

our Favourite book of the MonthThis book is a beautiful way to help children understand

their feelings. Borrow a copy from your school or public library and get cozy with your family and talk about and share your feelings.

in MY HeArT: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek (Author), Christine Roussey (Illustrator)Sometimes my heart feels like a big yellow star, shiny and bright.

I smile from ear to ear and twirl around so fast,I feel as if I could take off into the sky. This is when my heart is happy.

Happiness, sadness, bravery, anger, shyness . . . our hearts can feel so many feelings! Some make us feel as light as a balloon, others as heavy as an elephant. In My Heart explores a full range of emotions, describing how they feel physically, inside. With language that is lyrical but also direct, young children will be empowered by this new vocabulary and able to practice articulating and identifying their own emotions.

Calgary Reads helps children learn to read with confidence and joy. This includes helping children in Calgary to have their own books at home; supporting parents and caregivers to help their child develop literacy skills; and engaging businesses and the community to make reading a priority.

Spring cleaning tipsAfter a long winter of hibernating inside, follow these five steps for cleaning your spaces and welcoming spring:

WorK FroM ToP To boTToM. It may seem obvious, but when starting from the ceiling down, dirt is forced downward and reduces the need for you to clean the same space twice. Remove cobwebs from lights and ceiling fans, clean your furniture, and only then clean your floor.

CLeAn YoUr WinDoWS on THe oUTSiDe. Bring out the garden hose and a sponge and work out the spots and smudges that have accumulated over the winter from snow and dust. If you wash your windows on a cloudy day, the sun won't dry the cleanser before you're finished washing..

orGAnize YoUr CLoSeT. Get rid of unused clothes and accessories and organize things according to occasion — work, casual and formal. Make sure you have pieces that are easy to wear and pair well together.

WASH YoUr WALLS, cabinets and trim. Even though your floor may look like it picks up the most dirt, don't forget about your walls. Use a wet sponge to wash your vertical surfaces in sections. If you have particularly tough spots, use a very gentle cleanser diluted with water. Ensure you spot test inconspicuously prior to washing the entire wall to confirm that paint is not affected.

Working out on your own can be lonely, creating the potential to lose interest and motivation over time. Here are four new fitness classes to try this year that are sure to keep you going back for more:

boxinG. Forget about having to jump in the ring for this full body exercise — many gyms and studios focus on the no-contact style. This intense workout will improve overall fitness through moves that increase your agility, coordination, balance, endurance, speed and power. Be sure to wear clothes that you can jump and lunge in.

bArre. This ballet-inspired workout is designed to build toned and lean muscles. It features a combination of postures that use a barre to balance while performing small muscle movements with high reps.

MixeD ForMAT. Try a hybrid format, where multiple workouts are mixed into one class. They usually combine strength training and cardio, making a hybrid one of the most effective ways to burn calories. Make sure to dress appropriately for the types of workouts you will be doing, especially if the styles of exercise are completely different.

SPin. Group cycling is popular for a reason — you ride in a group setting that every fitness level can benefit from. Classes can be offered at your local gym or spin studio. Wear attire that's best suited for moderate impact.
