Academy Travel is delighted to present an outstanding professional development opportunity for current History teachers and student teachers. This 13-day program is designed to cover key syllabus areas from both the HSC Modern History syllabus and the VCE History syllabus.

Travel to Russia to see the sites associated with the 1917 Revolution, the 1944 Siege of Leningrad and the Cold War with academic expert Dr Matthew Del Santo.

Investigate the rise and fall of the Third Reich and the resulting Cold War in Munich, Nuremberg and Berlin, with visits to extensive museums and tours with local experts.

This carefully planned program will be escorted by an experienced tour manager and include a series of guided tours, on site visits with experts and workshops, alongside time for sightseeing, shopping and soaking up the local cultures.

In most cases, this tour will be fully tax deductible for full or part time History teachers. Please speak to your tax agent for professional advice. Some teachers may be able to have all or part of the tour fee subsidized by their school’s professional development program (letter of support available on request).

Academy Travel is endorsed to provide QTC Registered Professional Development for teachers accredited at Proficient Teacher level. Completing this study tour program will contribute 34 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing 2.1.2, 6.2.2, 6.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Matthew was born in Sydney and now resides in Copenhagen. He has a Bachelor of Arts with First-Class Honours from the University of Sydney and a PhD Philosophy in History from Cambridge University.

He is an historian of contemporary post-Soviet Russia and a Danish Research Council post-doctoral fellow at the University of Copenhagen. His present project investigates narratives of Russia's past in contemporary Russian political discourse.

He has worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is a former Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. He is also a regular contributor to the ABC on matters of international relations, policies and politics.

Matthew speaks a number of European languages, including Russian.

Your tour itinerary begins in Moscow at 6pm on Sunday, 24th September. If you are arranging your own individual flights, you should ensure your flight arrives in Moscow by at least 3pm on that day. The tour program ends after breakfast in Berlin on Friday 6th October.

An arrival transfer is provided from Moscow airport to the group hotel – please provide your flight details once booked. We can also provide a quote for departure airport transfers in Berlin on request.

Academy Travel requires that all participants have comprehensive travel insurance. We can arrange a policy with Suresave for $145.00 per person (for persons aged up to 49 years). Please indicate on your booking form if you are interested in this policy and we will provide you with the Product Disclosure Statement. Please note that additional premiums may apply due to age, pre-existing medical conditions and/or additional travel.

We welcome partners of teachers to accompany them on tour, and we do understand that not all activities may be of interest to non-teachers. Alternative activities for accompanying partners can be suggested by the tour manager (please note there are no refunds/discounts for unused portions of the tour). Non-teachers with a strong interest in the subject matter are also welcome. The tour is not suitable for children under the age of 16 years.

Your passport must be valid until April 6th, 2018 or will need to be renewed prior travel.

Australian passport holders do not require a visa to travel to Europe; however, all visitors are required to obtain a visa to enter Russia. The processing fee for a single entry Tourist Visa for Australian citizens is $120.00. More information on visa applications will be provided in your welcome pack.

Please note this itinerary is subject to change dependent on local conditions, weather, opening hours, availability of experts, availability of access, etc. Included meals are indicated: breakfast (B), lunch (L), dinner (D).

On arrival at Moscow Airport, you will be met with an airport transfer to your hotel (if you have informed of us of your flight arrival details). Your tour manager will meet the group in the hotel lobby at 6pm for an introductory talk by your academic expert Dr Matthew Dal Santo. This will be followed by an included group dinner at a local restaurant.

Overnight Moscow (D)

Today begins with a morning visit to Red Square, including the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral.

Using the Moscow Metro for transport will allow you to view stations containing marble decorations, stained glass, chandeliers and mosaics that stand as a testament to Stalinism.

Travel 65 metres underground to visit The Cold War Museum located in Bunker-42; complete with KGB rooms, raid sirens and series of tunnels.

In the late afternoon, Matthew will present a lecture on Russia’s Cold War before a free evening.

Overnight Moscow (B)

After a late morning check out, the high speed Sapsan train will have the group in St Petersburg within 4 hours. After checking in to the hotel, Matthew will present a talk on The Russian Revolution. There will be an included group dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Overnight St Petersburg (B, D)

Our half day coach tour of Revolutionary sites begins with a visit to the Smolny Insitute where Lenin declared the creation of the Bolshevik state. It remained Lenin’s headquarters and the seat of his government until March 1918 (Please note: visits to the building can be cancelled at short notice). You will then view the Tauride Palace and Finland station en route to the Peter and Paul Fortress. Here you will see where revolutionaries were held in prison and where Nicholas and Alexandria were laid to rest.

You will then proceed to the State Hermitage Museum, one the largest and oldest art museums in the world, for a self-guided visit of the collections.

The focus shifts to World War II history and in particular the 1944 siege of the city by the Germans. You will explore sites around the city, including significant memorials and cemeteries. Visit the Victory Square Museum, dedicated to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad, which has a short film presentation and contains weapons and soldiers’ belongings.

The afternoon is free to explore the area around Nevsky Prospekt and visit the iconic Church of the Spilled Blood.

Tonight, enjoy your final dinner in Russia with the group in a local restaurant.

Today the group will transfer to the airport and fly to Munich. Dinner will be included at the hotel on arrival.

Overnight Munich area (B, D)

Travel to nearby Obersalzburg on private coach and take a self guided tour of the Documentation Centre that covers Third Reich history and includes access to the Nazi bunker system. Nearby you can see what remains of the Berghof.

You will then venture further up the mountain and take the original brass elevator to the “Eagle’s Nest” – now the Kehlsteinhaus restaurant with beautiful alpine views. Here you will be treated to an included lunch before returning to the hotel.

Overnight Munich area (B, L)

This morning you will view Third Reich sites on a walking tour of Munich city centre with a local guide.

Travel by coach to Dachau for a guided visit the Concentration Camp Memorial site, dedicated to the memory of its victims.

Continue on coach to the medieval walled city of Nuremberg. Enjoy an orientation walk of the historical centre with your tour manager before an included group dinner in a local restaurant.

Overnight Nuremberg (B, D)

Nuremberg’s rich Germanic and imperial history led to its selection as host of the annual Nazi Rallies from 1933 to 1938. Today, you will take a walking tour of what remains of the grounds, partly designed by Albert Speer, including the Congress Hall, Great Road and Zeppelinfeld. There will also be time to explore the Documentation Centre with audio guides.

In the afternoon, learn about how the city has remade itself as a centre of human rights that began with the Nuremberg Trials at the end of WWII. A guided tour of the Memorium Nuremberg includes the place where the trials took place, Courtroom 600.

Overnight Nuremberg (B)

Before departing Nuremberg, we will visit the underground bunkers used to store the city’s priceless artworks during the WWII air raids.

You will travel to Berlin by private coach, arriving in the late afternoon. Dinner will be included in a traditional German beer hall.

Overnight Berlin (B, D)

The day begins where Hitler’s rise to power began; the Reichstag building. You will have the chance to walk inside the glass dome if parliament is not sitting. A local guide will then lead a walking tour of Third Reich sites in the city centre. You will see the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the site of Hitler’s bunker, Babelplatz and walk along the Unter den Linden.

After lunch, there is an included visit to the German Historical Museum. The Museum has an excellent collection of permanent exhibits tracing the country’s history from the Middle Ages, through the Wars until unification. The later afternoon and evening is at leisure to enjoy this exciting city.

Overnight Berlin (B)

Today, a coach tour will visit the expansive Soviet Memorial at Treptower Park and the Eastside Gallery, the largest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall now converted into an open air art exhibit. Other sites will include Alexanderplatz, Karl-Marx Allee, Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall Memorial.

Our teacher professional development tours stay at hotels of a 3-4 star rating in central, secure locations.

All the hotels selected by Academy Travel offer good facilities, secure locations and free wi-fi (however some may only offer access in the public areas of the building).

All rooms are twin-share with private bathrooms (single supplement available).

Specific hotels are not confirmed at time of printing. This information will be advised to participants in their final tour documentation.

A moderate level of physical fitness will be required in order to participate in the tour and enjoy everything that the itinerary has to offer. Specifically you should be able to do the following:

Keep up with the group at all times

Walk unassisted for up to three to four hours with only short breaks

Walk up and down slopes

Negotiate steps and slopes on archaeological sites, which are often uneven and unstable

Get on and off coaches/public transport unassisted

Move around airports with luggage unassisted

If you are concerned about your ability to meet the requirements of the trip we urge you to contact us for further information and to consult your medical practitioner for an honest assessment. The tour leaders may instruct you to take time out of the tour program if they consider that you will slow the group down or are at risk of injury or illness.

YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF BOOKING CONDITIONS

DEPOSITS: A deposit of $500 per person is required to confirm your booking on a tour. Final payment of the tour fee, insurance and any additional travel will be due 60 days before departure.

CANCELLATION FEES: If you decide to cancel your booking the following charges apply.

More than 60 days before departure: $500

60-45 days before tour start: 25% of total amount due

44-15 days before tour start: 75% of total amount due

14 days or less before departure: 100% of total amount due

UNUSED PORTIONS OF THE TOUR: We regret that refunds will not be given for any unused portions of the tour, such as meals, entry fees, accommodation, flights or transfers.

TRAVEL INSURANCE: Academy Travel requires all participants to obtain comprehensive travel insurance prior to commencing the tour. We can arrange this on your behalf, please contact us for a quote.

If the number of participants in a tour is significantly less than budgeted, or if there is a significant change in exchange rates Academy Travel reserves the right to amend the advertised price. If this occurs you will be given the option of canceling your booking and obtaining a full refund. If an Academy Travel tour is forced to cancel you will get a full refund of all monies paid.
