It is with great pleasure that I am able to say that the new 2015 membership renewal pins have arrived. The Pointsman logo with the number 75 on it, representing the 75th anniversary of the Military Police is one which will be a collector’s piece. With the arrival of the pins, it is requested that if you have not sent in your membership renewal fee ($20.00) that you consider doing it soon. The renewal fees are not just to ensure that you receive you token, it helps to ensure that the Web Page is up and running, the cost of the mail box is provided out of the funds, as well as the cost of shipping of the tokens of the renewal. Further we have received several requests for donations of our flag, to be flown at various venues, which also a cost to the Association. Should you have knowledge of any Military Police person active or retired who may be interested in joining our Association, please feel free to have them contact us through our web page. With all the activities of the 75th Anniversary, there is plenty of opportunities for members to seek out old and new friendships. I hope that you are able to take in a few of these events and ensure that the new members learn of our past from members who have lived it. "War Stories" are also intriguing to the younger generation. I am sure that we all have some to share. Please have a look at our web page for the events, and check out Association’s "SitRep" Newsletter which is full of event news. On a personal note, I would like to pass on my condolences from the Executive/Committee Members and all of the Association to the family and friends of members who have given their last call and are now watching over us. It has been a year of sadness with the number of Passing within our Brotherhood of Military Police, active and retired. Rest in Peace and they will always be Honored and Remembered.

POINTSMAN ATLANTIC

Mr. Rick DeGruyl Good Day all and greetings from the East Coast. First I would like to express our condolences to family & friends of Moncton native, Sgt Andrew Dorian, KIA.

Recent months have been quiet, we are all digging out of snow all most every day. Marian and I were able to travel to Moncton to meet up with Lt General (ret) Romeo Dallaires. When we last met at a PTSD Conference/ Gala by tema.ca in Halifax, I forgot to get him to sign the flag. Confirmed flag photo ops summer 2015; CF 18 Demo Team, Canadian Forces Snowbirds, Enrico Colantoni (Sgt Parker from Flash Point), Governor General of Canada & MP 75th Committee in the National War Museum. In the works of being confirmed; Provost Marshall, CDS & Minister of Defence. Also the New England Patriots are setting up a date to do a team photo with the Pointsman Flag to Honour &

Remember our fallen. The signature flag will be displayed at the 75th MP Anniversary Gala in the National War Museum, Ottawa. The antenna version will be flown from my hand cycle, (funded by Soldier On), for the Army Run in Ottawa in Sept and in May for a 400 km ride; CFB GAGETOWN to CFB HALIFAX to raise funds in support of the Military Police Blind Children’s Fund thru the MPNMRR. Please see attached flyer and consider making donation/ sponsor my hand cycle ride for the kids. Also the Pointsman Association has donated one of our flags to the MP Museum opening soon in Halifax Armoury. This flag will be carried on a/m hand cycle ride and delivered to the Museum Committee in Halifax. Sincerely

Rick de Gruyl PS: between snow storms I have been busy supporting efforts to have New Brunswick put thru a PTSD Legislation Policy for First Responders. A cause close to my heart as this terrible unseen injury nearly took me last year. I know several firefighters and paramedics and 2 RCMP members, (1 was retired) who took their own lives in the last 3 years. I have intervened directly with 5 suicidal members and with help from the RCL and tema.ca we managed to keep them with us. Praise God for that. I also had several phone interactions with executive staff at PM's Office and Veterans Affairs to help improve the system at OSI Clinics. We all need to be vigilant and do buddy checks to help those who spent their careers helping others and neglecting their own traumas.

Well, where do I start? It has been hectic as usual as at some points we had +200 staff and student s in house. These include/included 1 X MPOC, 5 X QL3, 1 X QL 5A, 1 X QL6A and 1 X

QL 6B. The MP QL 6B hosted their Training Mess Diner on 4 March with over 200 staff and students in attendance. They did not have enough serving staff on so the dinner lasted 5 hours before we broke to the lounge. As there was a Grad Parade for QL 3 Course 0020 and all of the six courses were either on or in attendance at the parade, not many remained in the lounge after the dinner was over. Note to self - No Parade after the Mess Diner. A little birdy did tell me the Cmdt was entertaining until 0430 hrs. I was extremely proud of the Sgts on this year's 6B course. I was amazed they attended in better shape than most QL5A students and eagerly participated in all fitness periods, be it runs, circuit training or stretching (yoga). For your information, the current version of the 6B course is nowhere similar to those we with a little TI had attended in the past. The course is now truly a Pass/Fail course and has an extensive Pre-Course Package, eight EC tests and four PC tests to be passed. The students are instructed on Business Continuity Plans (BCPs), Business Planning (BP), the Operational Planning Process (OPP), Military and Civilian Personnel Management, contributing to Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs), Addressing Issues as a Command Team Member, Provide Technical Advice to Superiors and the highlight was an exceptional two period presentation by the VCDS CWO, On Leadership at Higher Levels and the Command Team. This is the second year CPO1 McTigue has given time from his busy schedule to do so. We took advantage and had the MPOC students in attendance as well for their Professional Development. The Commandant and I are attempting to assist Mr Doc Aldridge and his committee in making venues and staff available for the Pointsman Association's "Rendezvous 75 of RV75", which is scheduled for 2-4 Oct 15 at CFB Borden. Normally this would not be an administrative issue; however, as there is no firm declaration of when we will be required to move staff and students into the new Academy, we will do our very best. Currently the new facility is about one month from substantial completion and then it is passed to DCC for a couple of months, prior to Shared Service Canada installing the IT network. It is hoped Selection and Training could be utilizing their offices as early as August and the remainder of the staff/students by mid-October. The Branch Advisor/Deputy Commander (LCol Sansterre) and the Branch CWO (CPO1 Bolduc) will be determining the required events to recognize the Grand Opening/Dedication as firm dates become available. As family does not need an invitation to visit your home; here are dates of upcoming parades: a. MP QL3 Serial 0021(F) - Red Beret Ceremony 1530 hrs, 16 Apr 15 and Grad Parade 0915 hrs, 17 Apr 15; b. MP QL3 Serial 0022 (E) - Red Beret Ceremony 1530 hrs, 16 Jun 15 and Grad Parade 0915 hrs, 17 Jun 15; c. MPOC Serial 0003 - Red Beret Ceremony 1530 hrs, 23 Jun 15 and Grad Parade 0915 hrs, 24 Jun 15 (To be confirmed); d. MP QL3 Serial 0023 (F) - Red Beret Ceremony 1530 hrs, 29 Jul 15 and Grad Parade 0915 hrs, 30 Jul 15; and e. MP QL3 Serial 0024(E) - Red Beret Ceremony 1530 hrs, 10 Sep 15 and Grad Parade

0915 hrs, 11 Sep 15. Also of note in addition to the upcoming Annual Posting Season (APS), requisite staff training for the new academy infrastructure, summer annual leave, the Academy is planning on having two teams participate ibn the "Peace Keeper's Challenge" being held in Ottawa in conjunction with the 75th festivities. Once Again Mr Bob Thomas has graced us with his continued support, Not only did he have that beautiful bike on display (which I will find a way to obtain legally or illegally) between the two cruisers during the Grad Parade, he donated another cheque to the Veteran's Museum Support Fund and delivered a box of items graciously donated by Mrs Margret Frost, widow of Charlie Frost, C Pro C, and prominent supporter of the Branch and Heritage Hall. This box contained one of the three larger 1990 versions of the sculpted "Pointsman", a beautiful signed portrait of Col Ritchie, dedicated to Mr Frost, a C Pro C, 60th Anniversary commemorative plate Finally, with the exception of a two day Branch PER Board, I will be attempting to burn off my remaining annual leave and so I will be out of the office from 18 Mar - 7 Apr 15. During this timeframe, I will be tackling the "Honey Do List" but will have my Blackberry and will address any issues/concerns. Until next month, take good care. Securitas

75th

Anniversary “MP Veterans Historical Platoon”

With the announcement of RV75 being held at the Canadian Forces Military Police Academy, there is no greater need now for members to assist with the MPVHP. By being at the school there will be displays that will require some assistance, as well as with some special events surrounding the reunion itself. At times the students of today will be visiting the Reunion to learn and speak with those who proudly served in the field, something that many will not get experience should the present MP programme continue.

Duncan Legget who is serving as the OPI of the Platoon is looking for members that have experience with giving instruction, as well as assisting with displays of vintage vehicles, uniforms and equipment. Should you wish further information on the MPVHP, please send an e-mail to [email protected] or you can send an inquiry to The Pointsman Association, PO Box 33023 Bellwood Post Office, London ON N5Y 1A0.

2015

The POINTSMAN ASSOCIATION

“LONDON LUNCHEON”

On Saturday, May 9th we are inviting Military Police Serving Members and

Veterans in the London and Southwestern Ontario area (and those who may be planning to visit London on this day) to join us for lunch, a few cold beverages and lots of legends, stories, tall tales and lies. The Kelsey’s at the Bellwood Plaza (just across from Wolseley Barracks), 900 Oxford Street East here in London is where we are getting together around 1130 hrs to about 1330 hrs. The menu is very reasonable priced with good menu selections. It is unfortunate that under the present circumstances that Base London (or at that matter Prevost Armouries) are not options at this time. However we would like to see a good turnout to toast the 75

th Anniversary of Our Branch, and look to

further opportunities to gather to quaff an ale and tell some lies… Further Details will be posted on all Pointsman websites. (thepointsman.ca and all Poinstman Facebook sites or email [email protected]) RSVPs appreciated but not required.

JUST IN TIME…. Mike Secord: (Frank Harrison)

If you know Mike and have not been advised, he was diagnosed with liver cancer recently and it is very advanced. I chatted with him last week about doing a little story line from MP’s who worked with him to give him a chuckle or fond memory, he was very tired and didn’t get back. I learned today he was back in hospital, much weaker and it has spread to his lungs. Without hearing it from Mike

directly, second hand from a friend who visited him, it looks bad. I had asked him for permission to ask for short stories from folks who had worked with him to quickly put a little booklet together. However, in light of his prognosis, reaching out to you two for your thoughts. I told him it was so he could get a chance to read some kind words and maybe share some back. He liked the idea. Your thoughts, not going to do anything as he never officially endorsed? Has anyone done anything in the past like this? With a heavy heart, Frank

492 MP Cadets Unit Change of Command Parade On March 25th, 2015 the 492 MP Cadets from Gananoque ON had a Change of Command Parade. The Outgoing Commanding Officer Captain A. Pike helped develop the Cadet Unit into a very good Unit who proudly wore their red berets. The new Commanding Officer, Captain T. Sexton is very eager to continue building the programme & working with these cadets, making them good representatives of both their Unit and the Military Police Branch.

“As Much Reflection as Celebration”

BRANCH ANNIVERSARY… TO HONOUR AND REMEMBER

It’s Spring! Or at least according to the calendar it is, and thus we have turned the corner on another “Typically Canadian” winter. As Canadians this past winter will find its way into stories around campfires, or tales we will tell the Grandkids of how we braved waist deep snow (or higher in the Maritimes) through blinding snow storms, or how after an ice storm the highway was so frozen that we skated our way to the next town for supplies. Yet there is something about this winter that will change the traditional mood of our stories, for it was a winter that we lost so many and so much. For over 20 years I personally have taken the writing of the Sitrep as a personal tribute to those people who in an all too short of time because my mentors, my friends, my family. It why we do the things we do. It’s why we care… because others cared enough to contribute in making you the person you are. It is also why that the Pointsman Association, and its predecessor the 1 Military Police Platoon Association came into being…to have an avenue to reach out in communication to comrades and friends, and to Honour and Remember. Since October of 2014, I personally cannot remember a winter where so many have passed on into Memory, Legend and Story. Veteran, comrade, family. At least one lesson that we have learned well over the years is to set up communications through various ways. The Pointsman and CMPA websites, our twitter feeds, and e-mails have been very busy this past winter with very sobering news that another has left us. The one benefit is that no one ever needs to go without someone remembering them. For there is No Truer Honour for a Warrior than to be remembered amongst his brothers and sisters. I like many of you were saddened by the many names that I personally recognized which came over social media. It was a year where through comments and condolences everyone appeared effected by a loss. Everyone recognized a name and recalled a memory.

So it is Spring, which will lead to summer, which will lead to warm weather and sunny days that will bring out the smiles & fun again. Over the

next six months the functions and events of the 75th

Anniversary of the Military Police Branch have but one purpose… to give past and present members a chance to Honour, and chance to Remember. It also gives its members a chance to know that their own contributions to the History and Traditions made a difference, for the Branch is truly the total sum of all who proudly wore the cipher and the crown, or the sky blue, or combats, and experienced with pride the Red Beret & Thunderbird. As a whole we have an opportunity for reflection amidst celebration and satisfaction.

“Lest We Forget” is not only for Remembrance Day, but for all our days. Please ensure that you take some time to think about those of your past and present, for they are the basis of your future.

To Honour and Remember… Thanks Sarge.

As part of our History and Traditions, included on the last two pages is a sample score sheet for “Screw Your Neighbour” or as it is also known as “Combat Bridge”. Deal the number of cards to each player as indicated.

Each person bids on what tricks they can take using the trump designated. One catch, the total number of tricks cannot equal the total, number of real tricks (ie. 8 cards dealt, number of total tricks called from all players cannot

equal 8…. Thus someone will always get screwed. Those that make their bid simply add 10. To those that fail deduct 10 plus their bid. To those that

“simply can’t take a thing” (Eh Doctor!). Plus 15 to make it, minus 20 should you take a trick… Give it a try and

Remember no loaded weapons allowed on the tables!
