Welcome

As we approach the end of what has been an incredibly busy year, it is good to reflect on our work so far and evaluate how far we have come since September in improving the Academy. Behaviour has improved hugely over this year. I am always proud to show prospective parents and students around the site where they regularly reflect on our calm, orderly and purposeful academy.Attendance has also seen a massive improvement on last academic year and is now well above national average. It has not been as high for several years. We have taken the decision to move several departments around to improve the flow of students around the site and, in particular, the main building. As this has been going on over a number of weeks, we have seen students really work with us to make sure this has gone off without a hitch. House offices have been moved and decorated to ensure the pastoral teams have a super place to work and greet youngsters when they are meeting together. We are going to change the way that forms are recognised from September because just being a number feels too impersonal. As a result, your child’s form will have the initials of the staff member attached to it from the beginning of the new academic year. In addition, all of the Houses will have new Deputy Heads of House and the House zones will be fully up and running for a purposeful September start. I hope you will agree with me that, despite schools being challenging places to work, this year has been a really positive year. I hope that this will only continue from September. We have a number of staff moving to pastures new this summer and we wish them well. I am also delighted to report that we have undertaken an incredibly successful recruitment round for September so that the Academy is replacing any staff moving on with able replacements. It will only be a few weeks before the examination results are announced for post 16 study and GCSE. I wish to take this opportunity to wish all of our students the very best if they are expecting their results this summer. We will look forward to celebrating our students’ successes come 15 & 22 August respectively.

Wishing you all the very best for a restful summer break.

Foyle Young Poet of the Year Award Student Successes

Thomas Harding, an A* grade A level Mathematician from last year, has now gone on to become a Lincoln University Maths superstar, winning the Boole Prize 2019 for the best performance in year 1! His tutor described him as an ‘exceptional student’. Tom’s reaction to the award was typically underplayed and he questioned “On what basis?”Our mathematics teacher, Mr Ireland, remarked, ‘When Tom came to you with a question you knew it wasn’t going to be straightforward! Brilliant young man!

One of our Y11 students Mykenzie Mellars has been awarded the Arkwright Scholarship for engineering. This is a very prestigious award and Mykenzie has been expertly guided through the process by Mr Crawford.

Kristin Burgess, 8.9, helps as a dance assistant teacher to ages 4+. Working after school on a Tuesday, she helps teach street dance, then goes on to do her own cheerleading and street dance classes. She also assists with teaching cheerleading, ballet and tap on a Thursday after school. She loves doing this and obviously doesn't get paid although she does get her uniform provided. She was chosen by her dance teacher Lisa Hurst, to assist her and has been doing so for just over a year. With her also being a young carer for her sister, this is a nice time out for her and is boosting her confidence! Well done Kristin, keep up the good work! Lisa Hurst Dance is an independent dance company that is based in Lincolnshire. During this time, Lisa worked across the region delivering sessions for local authorities, School Improvement Services and local arts companies. Since then Lisa has developed and expanded Lisa Hurst Dance to deliver sessions for both children and adults in Lincolnshire.

Authors Raymond Antrobus and Jackie Kay are the judges for Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2019! “When we asked our esteemed judges what they were looking for in a winning entry Raymond said that he was looking for “something that sings, moves and inspires. Something that shows the world as I’ve yet to see, feel or hear it,” whilst Jackie remarked that she is looking for “poems that are memorable, that I’ll carry around with me for the day. An arresting first line, an unusual image, a distinct and interesting voice, a different tone. I love coming across poems that make me look at something in a completely new way, and I love poems that work as well when I read them out loud as they do on the page.”Quote taken from The Poetry SocietySRPA have 14 entrants, so good luck to you all!Mrs Ransome, LibrarianStaff have been voting and I would like to share a poem written by Amy Brown, age 13.

The Old Man The old man drifting away

Surrounded by his wife’s soft touchIn the warm night of May

Peaceful memories sending him offWith his wife under the moon

Painting a moth

His wife sitting there with himHolding his head on her knees

Kindly assuring him there will be no grim

Hoping to take away the painHe let out his last smile

Hoping his wife would do the same

A smile sweet and kindWas formed onto his wife’s face

That memory forever playing in her mind

Duke of Edinburgh

Adam Powles ran the Lincoln 10k in one hour and eight minutes raising over £200 for Diabetes.co.uk.

Anya Bonner 7.3 competed in the European Taekwondo championships in Croatia and she secured a 2nd and 3rd placing. A fantastic achievement Anya!

After a number of rainy June days, our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh team had been weather watching hoping with everything crossed that their assessment expedition, taking place in the Lincolnshire Wolds, would not require a canoe. Those of you who know will be aware that Duke of Edinburgh teams are allowed to travel by various means, however, we have always conducted ours in the traditional manner of walking through all weather conditions. Thankfully, the skies stayed clear and the sun even popped its head out for one of the two days. The team navigated their way up and down the Wolds. Carrying their full expedition kit and recording examples of the varied flowers growing eagerly due to all of that rain, the supervising staff were often met with cheerful faces and singing. Continuing to build their knowledge of the map and navigational skills enabled them to successfully stay on track even if they did need to give a rather nosy group of cows a wide birth! They demonstrated a strong team bond, sharing tasks at the campsite and when cooking showing support towards one another when needed. Needless to say the whole team have successfully passed the expedition element of the Bronze award. Well done Team SRPA!!

Year 9 Lincolnshire Show School’s Challenge

Year 10 GCSE Field visit to Flamborough Head

For five Year 9 students months of hard work during their lunch times, was rewarded with a first prize at the Lincolnshire Show School’s Challenge competition. The group carried out extensive research into the foods produced in Lincolnshire, produced an eye catching display and presented their findings and marketing ideas to a team of judges. They impressed the judges by their ability to answer some tricky questions about their work and the issues surrounding the export of Lincolnshire produce. We should like to thank the North Hykeham branch of the Lincolnshire Coop and, Alan Stennett, our mentor for their help and support with the research for this work.

In June, the Y10 Geography students braved the rain to visit Flamborough Head on The Holderness Coast as part of their GCSE. They quickly recognised all of the features that we had studied in previous lessons (Headlands, bays, caves, arches stacks and stumps) and learnt many new fieldwork techniques whilst collecting data to analyse upon our return. On the way home, we paid a quick visit to Mappleton where they saw first-hand how much our coastline is eroding and the issues this causes for coastal communities. One student said that he found the day very useful as it helped him to better understand the previous unit of work.

The Year 12 Geographers have been busy this term. In addition to studying for and completing their end of year examinations, they have visited Bishop Grosseteste University and Whisby Nature Park.At Bishop Grosseteste University we participated in a Geography master class, learning about the

little known island of Tuvalu, before honing our academic writing and research skills. Our visit to Whisby enabled us to practise field work techniques in preparation for starting our Non Examined Assesments later this term.

GCSE Photography - Our Modern World

With GCSE Photography continuing to grow in popularity and success, the Art, Photography and Design Technology department set our younger students an inspiring completion to encourage their creative thinking alongside enabling our budding photographers a chance to show off their skills. With a wide variety of entries to the Key Stage 3 photography competition it was difficult for the teaching staff to decide who would be awarded first place for the image successfully depicting ‘Our Modern world’. It was close but our first place winner was awarded for an image capturing child’s play in our modern world highlighting our growing concern for young people and how much time they may spend on social media and digital devices. Our second place captured fast moving cars at night depicting our ever busy lives and demonstrating a strong technical ability to use a camera sophisticatedly and finally our third place was awarded for a tranquil image exploring our love for the natural world and how it can still bring peace in our modern busy lives. House points have been awarded to all entries and prizes for first and second place.

Our Year 7 Art curriculum has a strong focus on the very much loved artist, Vincent Van Gogh, and throughout the year our students in Year 7 have not only been creating work inspired by the vast subjects he explored during him artistic life, but they have also been expanding their knowledge and understanding of him as a person. Through this developed knowledge our students have been able to understand the journey Van Gogh’s life took including the ups and the downs, which inspired their most recent homework challenge, creating a piece of work exploring

and visually communicating the struggles Van Gogh suffered with his personal mental health. The vast array of creative approaches has not only communicated this very important element of our modern lives but also consolidated the students understanding of a hugely inspiring artist.

Year 10 Workwise Day 2019

Free Access to Revision

Our Year 10 students took part in the Academy’s annual Workwise Day on Wednesday 3 July aimed at starting students on their road to employment.Fourteen employers from in and around Lincoln delivered practical workshops giving students a taste of employment from their area of expertise.Anyone visiting the Academy would have found an ambulance, police car, tractor cab of an articulated lorry parked in our car park with lambs, kid goats and guinea pigs on our sports field.Employers supporting the day were RAF Wittering, EMAS, Ford & Slater, Praxair, David Lloyd Leisure at Burton Waters, Rand Farm in conjunction with Lincoln College, Stringers Hair Salon, Lincoln Coop, Lindum Group, University of Lincoln, Sewell Photography Lincolnshire Police, Access to Music and JCC Ltd.After finding out about a range of careers in the morning the afternoon was all about developing employability skills. RAF Wittering, the Army Outreach Team from Nottingham and National Citizenship Service set the students a range of challenges that would require the students to use their initiative, problem solving, team working and communication skills. Students rose to the challenge of the day with employers commenting how engaged the students were with responding. They found the day to be really enjoyable and informative.

Windsor House

A message from Miss HowickI just want to say how privileged I am to take on the role of Head of Windsor house. There is a strong legacy to uphold in Windsor and I have every confidence we can all pull together as a team to continue Windsor's success. As a PE teacher I am a big believer in the power of strong TEAM and that every member of Windsor house has to pull together, get involved and proudly represent our house. We have had loads of fantastic opportunities launched in the last term, including; bake off, sports day, litter picking, spelling bee, cricket and rounders and I can truly say I have been proud to lead Windsor. I am really excited about what the future holds for all the house teams and all the new enrichment opportunities on offer for our students to get the best school experience possible. #teamwindsor!A message from Mrs JelleyI would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Pastoral Lead for Windsor House. I have been part of Windsor for the whole of my SRPA career and my family has an affiliation with Windsor House going back over 40 years, so I was thrilled when this new exciting role was developed. I feel extremely privileged to have been given the opportunity to support all of the amazing students in Windsor House, offering support and assistance when needed to minimise any barriers to learning and maximise pupil participation in school. It has been a very busy few weeks getting to know a new group of students, preparing and moving in to the new Windsor Office but we are finally in and ready for this new exciting chapter at SRPA.

Stuart HouseMessage from Mr Skaley – Stuart Head of HouseWhat an incredible honour it is to be Head of Stuart House. Every day I see before me an amazing group of young people full of potential and talent. This term, many of you took the opportunity to show your talents and realise your potential. This was not only in lessons, but in house competitions as well. Back in May, we saw the new house system take shape and big changes for everyone. The turning point for me, and proof that house competition was alive and well, was the SRPA Bake Off. Never before have I seen a house competition with such a buzz and participation with tables and tables of amazing cakes. Exciting times lie ahead for us. We have a new Student Leadership Team in place who, I have no doubt, will add immense value to Stuart House. We also have two new year 7 forms joining us in September. Let’s welcome them in to our community, show them our values and get them on board with driving Stuart forward. Be strong, be kind, be bold, be humble and be proud to be Stuart! Have a wonderful, safe and exciting summer. We look forward to seeing you all in September. Message from Miss Taylor – Stuart Deputy Head of HouseHaving only joined the school after Easter, I am incredibly grateful to everyone in Stuart House for welcoming me as part of the team. I am continually impressed at the dedication, passion and resilience shown by a huge number of pupils in our house, and it has been amazing to see the number of pupils stepping up to our student leadership roles. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first full term as Deputy Head of House, particularly supporting Stuart on Sports Day, even if it did leave me with glitter tan lines on my face! I wish you all a happy, safe and healthy summer break and look forward to seeing you all again in September and to welcoming our new Year 7s.Message from Mr Spence – Stuart Pastoral LeadStuart House would like to extend enormous thanks to the team for all your efforts and hard work during the transition to the House system. Whilst it’s been hectic at times, the backup and support of everybody has been superb and without your contribution we wouldn’t have made the progress that’s got us to where we are. Of course, there is still much to do but we are confident that with the continuation of everyone’s fantastic efforts, we will continue to see the growth of Stuart House. The willingness to build the House has been mirrored by our students who have really stepped up, showing great maturity, leadership and a willingness to adopt the new system and make it their own. We are excited at the prospect of Stuart House going from strength to strength and we look forward to making the journey together. #GoStuart.

STUART ACHIEVEMENTSThe efforts of the students from Stuart House were phenomenal in the bake sale; well done to everyone who took part! Lancaster HouseA message from Mr Smith Well that was a whirlwind of a term. Look how far we have come since June 1st. From bake offs, to litter picking. School productions to Spelling Bees. This term we have been amazingly busy. I am proud of every one of you for taking on the challenge of being made for more. Each and every week, we all did our part. We made sure that everyone felt the purple wave, and people knew that we were a House to be noticed. That the other houses have been put on notice. Finally I would like to introduce our first every House Captains. The youngest to be ever named House Captains and I am sure they will be amazing: Freddie Ayres and Anna Hoe. Both of them have embodied what it means to be a Lancaster member. Reliable, resilient, and strong. I am very proud of our House and its achievements this term. The ground work that Mrs Fields laid for us, must also be recognized as it gave us the opportunity for success. Watching you guys soar this term has been amazing and much of that must be attributed to Mrs Fields.Whilst our first year has been a good one, it is time to build on it. Time to rise into the sky and be successful. Time to overcome the odds and fly. Time to show we are Made. For. More.Have a great summer and don’t forget one thing:Always be awesome.A message from Mr Turner Firstly, I’d like to introduce myself as the new Pastoral Lead for Lancaster house. I’m new to SRPA and I can honestly say that the welcome from all the staff and students has been incredible. I feel like I’m part of something very special at this academy and can’t wait to share my experience in supporting your children. Secondly, I would like to let you know that we are building something very positive within the Lancaster house and this will continue to grow. We want all children to reach their potential and to know that the sky’s the limit. Between myself and Mr Smith, we will make sure your children realise that they are made for more. #purplereign

ACHIEVEMENTSWe had our first full sports day, and the Academy learned the meaning of ‘Purple Reign!’ Event after event we did our best and not once did we quit. Every time we took the field, we challenged for a win. Let us not forget that we were the loudest house to have been heard since the smashing of atoms created this universe! Big Bang has got nothing on the Purple Noise! On top of that, we had cricket success and a rounders experience. We made sure that people knew that Lancaster was a house that gave our all. We also rounded ourselves off outside of sports, participating in the school production of ‘High School Musical,’ French Vocab competition and the Spelling Bee. 3rd place in the book wrapping competition. Oh and the Bake Off, even though we are the smallest house, we had more cakes per-capita and we came in second place! Let’s also not forget our academic success, where engagement in lessons was up across the board, lateness was down and behaviour improved.

Tudor House

A message from Mr Lloyd-Richards & Mrs Rowley

It is hard to believe that it was only 7 weeks ago that we started with the new look Tudor House. The unfailing passion and enthusiasm has been evident from the initial Bake off event to Sports Day and everything in between. All of our students have embraced the changes before them and shown undeniable commitment to raising standards whether it be in or out of lessons. This is evident in the significant rise in House Points earned and a similar reduction in LLDs. We are excited to see what next year brings and look forward to building on this year’s progress ensuring that Tudor House goes from strength to strength! We wish you all well-deserved and restful break.

York House

A message from Mrs FieldsWow, what a busy term we have had! We have possibly seen more change in this short space of time then we have seen in the Academy since I returned as a teacher in 2008.This has been a term of great change. Many of our students have moved classroom and we have now established our House area along the main corridor of the building. Some finishing touches to both classrooms and the House Office will be completed over summer and we will be ready for our launch into next year.I feel privileged to lead the best House in the Academy. The keyword of this term has been PARTICIPATION, and the students of York house have surpassed my expectations. We have had successes and we have faced the challenge of defeat with unswerving passion and drive. This is all I can ask for!I am sure that you will welcome our new students into Academy life as they start in September. We all remember our first days at the Academy (even though mine was too many years ago to count on fingers and toes!) Our new prefects, mentors and House Captains will ensure a happy and calm transition for everyone. We will also welcome Miss Myers to the team as our Deputy Head of House. I hope that you all enjoy your well-earned break.
